How do I use RSS feeds
Date: January 10, 2009 09:46AM
I've been using K-Meleon as my default browser for almost a year now because nothing else runs this slick on my old PC with dial-up. I've never bothered to use the RSS in K-Meleon because I just can't figure it out,.. I choose the easier option and switch over to Firefox when I need to check the news via RSS because it's so quick and uncomplicated. Can someone help me to conquer the K-Meleon RSS feature in simple easy to understand language.

NewsFox RSS
go to menu item -> Tools -> Mail and News -> Read RSS. Start NewsFox.
It supports import OMPL so You can import Your Firefox feeds list.
You can add Feed URLs manually. Add feed -> insert the feed's URL into popup. & Refresh.
RSS Button
A button for RSS is in Phoenity skin. Go to ./skins/Poenity/toolbars.cfg open it with an editor. Remove the"#" before each line and save. That will give You easier access to Foxit.
Here is the code to alter
# RSS{
# macros(RSS)
# Read RSS Feeds
# mailnewshot.bmp[2]
# mailnewscold.bmp[2]
# }
do it like:
RSS{
macros(RSS)
Read RSS Feeds
mailnewshot.bmp[2]
mailnewscold.bmp[2]
}
and save the altered file. If that is too complicated?
AFAIK You can create a session with an open NewsFox tab or Window if You use RSS a lot.
Or You can create a NewsFox bookmark to start chrome://newsfox/content/newsfox.xul
BTW.
Do a backup of toolbars.cfg before You start editing it.
An error in a skin's toolbars.cfg will prevent K-Meleon from starting!
Not only Phoenity skin has an RSS button, most have this hidden button.
You can use "#" to hide any button that You do not use.
Out off the box K-Meleon can do all that is required and more (unlike FF where You must install extensions). But things that are not used by all are stored away.
Firefox Live Bookmarks News Feed
The needed URL code for life bookmarks starts with
http and ends after
ID="rdf:#$HvPhC3".
(The subsequent clutter shows the needed string

)
You add the URL to Foxit as new feed..

Hi guenter, I tried to add an RSS feed as described in your reply to my post on "how do I use RSS feeds." I used the method that you described at the beginning of your post to manually add a feed's URL into the Newfox popup. It went in OK but all attempts to refresh the feed have resulted in no activity and hence no news items from the Austalian News site that I have chosen. Maybe I'm a little too old (65) and not up to speed with the knowledge rquired to delve deep into the K-Meleon sttings. I don't understand why the RSS function is not enabled to run automatically in K-Meleon "out of the box" as other browsers do. I won't worry too much about it and will persevere whenever I get some spare time to indulge. In the meantime, I'll continue with Firefox for RSS.
sincere thanks, Wally

I am 57

I learned a lot here.
& never mind if You do not understand - I speak German
& it is hard to find the wanted part in the clutter I made.
& Maybe I have an error in the code I posted
I exported a newsfox.oplm and attached it.
You can import it into Your Newsfox.
From that You will have a better chance to retro engineer the needed part of the URLs.
A RSS reader is another application - K-Meleon is about a browser-only application for Win32 that is based on the Gecko engine. An RSS was added as amenity before the first installable extensions were made. Newsfox works in K-Meleon because the creator wants to support this browser also. If You find Newsfox complicated there is a more basic and light
MicroRSS on the K-Meleon extension page.

Well done guenter,.. you've inspired me to try again and I'm so happy that there are people out there in forum-land that are almost "over the hill" age-wise and still performing like a 21 year old. I'll report back in a day or so after my next venture.

Sorry but I've taken the cowards way out and given up on the K-Meleon RSS,.. it's just too user-unfriendly for me. I'm still in love with K-Meleon and am keeping it as my default browser. I'm now using another browser known as "Deepnet Explorer 1.52" purely for RSS news feeds because it comes fitted with an integrated RSS feature which is just so easy. Kind regards to you for trying to point me in the right direction with K-Meleon RSS information.

57? When I first came to this forum and so your name i said to myself this guy has to be Ewoodward from TWB forum. He tries to help inexperienced users like you and has moustaches. And is around your age. Just give him a beer in the the hand and voila: Guenther is born.

Thank You. Extremely nifty!
p.s.
Guess I see when RSS are offererd, but do You by any chance know = if the rss.dll is updated, it only showed whether an RSS is present, but that would help.
Any idea & what link to a current kpluging feed indicator *.dll?
(whatever it was called). And sorry, but I merely remember that a kplugin existed

.
Do You remember the URL?
Please remember to commit a working kmm to wiki, else tell alain - maybe he will make an installable package for new users. PPL here know where to pace but...

Re: How do I use RSS feeds

er.. i don't think there was an rss kplugin. i could be mistaken cause there's a missing period for me in km development. i have no idea wot was happening with kmeleon between versions 0.8 to 1.1.4 -some where during that time i even used a kninja samurai variant and i didnt realise it was an "unofficial km"

.. how stupid was that!
i meant by the orange icon.. the one that appears on pages with rss support like bbcnews, they have that icon..or just click where it sez rss.
i don't know if the macro should be submitted.. i just posted it to help terrawerra(we don't want to loose a good fellow to another browser because of rss

)
i actually found the add url(chrome://newsfox/content/addurl.xul?) by complete chance when i opened up newsfox to edit its newfox.etd to make its window resize to a humane size when opennewwindow is selected in macro instead of tab. the reason i wanted to do that is because i made an autoit tool to send commands to the newsfox window to add a url from macro:
; Script Function:
#NoTrayIcon
shellexecute($CmdLine[1], "chrome://newsfox/content/newsfox.xul")
sleep(2484)
send("{f}")
sleep(200)
send("^v")
sleep(100)
exit
the f key would open the addurl but then the newsfox would never accept the key shortcut when opened in a tab from the macro.. for some odd reason the window though active and in focus but newsfox would only accept the command if clicked on with mouse...which was not doable with autoit because i wouldn't know where exactly every user's mouse cursor would be on the screen..it could start a whole mess.. but then i found out when newsfox window was detached or initiated to open in newwindow instead of tab, it would accept the f key shortcut and add the url.. but there was another problem; when newsfox was opened in newwindow it would open in a size of about 60x20

which meant it had to be resized. so i blew up the newfox jar to fix this and while i was messing in there i found the address for the window to add a url!!
all problems solved
only problem with the macro now is when passing url feeds that have a question mark like kmeleon/feeds?blahblah.php it will stop adding the rest of the address after the ? .. i spent an hour trying to fix it but i couldn't.. maybe someone can continue from there and add it
for now here's a clean version without profanity
# K-Meleon Macros (http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?id=MacroLanguage)
# ---------- adds rss/atom URL feeds in newsfox----------------------------------------------------------
#
# ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
addfeed{
menugrayed=(hostname($URL)=="");
opentab("chrome://newsfox/content/addurl.xul?".$LinkURL);
}
addfeed_BuildMenu{
setmenu(LinkSave,macro,"Add RSSFeed",addfeed);
}
$OnInit=$OnInit."addfeed_BuildMenu;";
# ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$macroModules=$macroModules."addfeed;";
if someone can add it to the macros wiki.. i'm kinda daunted by editing wikis.. i once edited a wikipedia page and deleted half its content

Are you tried to use escape characters for replace in rss urls?
Read this post about it.

AFAIK the RSS indicator was by Dorian. No matter in which distro You saw it.
But I do not know the current location, whether it is updated or needs it.

could it be that i saw it in kninja? i don't even have that version anymore.. it's somewhere on a dvd but not on pc. if dorian can update it..then one click on it can send to the addurl xul of newsfox.. i know this will make a lot of newsfeeds users happy.

gunter, check this out;
http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?1,40619,40619#msg-40619
i found it using yahoo - ofcourse forum search didn't help..someone oughta do something about the forum search
with that plugin we can configure it to open addurl.xul.. only dorian knows where is that plugin

Finally solved the riddle on how to use RSS feeds with K-Meleon,.. some of you may not agree, but for me it works well! It's known as "Google Reader",.. not perfect but it sure does work so easy and super-quick with K-Meleon. I've now divorced Firefox and Opera and fallen in love with K-Meleon.
