unofficial 1.9 variation : K-Meleon-SM2
Posted by: Fred
Date: January 10, 2009 06:28PM

I have uploaded to Rapidshare an unofficial 1.9 variation :
K-Meleon-SM2 .
This is an 1.9 variation of K-Meleon 1.5.x ,
based on Gecko 1.9.1b3pre from Seamonkey 2.0 alpha .

* This is an experimental version, using parts of the upcoming K-Meleon generation and based on Gecko 1.9 .
* My intention is to present an 1.9 variation that works in Windows, but also in Linux with wine, where the conditions to work are more difficult for K-Meleon than in Windows.
* This version works only, if you have the files msvcp71.dll, msvcr71.dll and mfc71u.dll in your system or in your K-Meleon main folder. If you need these dll's, look for them in the Internet.
If necessary in Linux, put them into the K-Meleon main folder.
* The profile will be created inside the K-Meleon folder. If you want it inside the ".wine" folder, because of user rights problems, rename the file profile.ini to profile.ini-renamed before the first start.
* In Linux the URL bar is only usable with more recent wine versions.
If you are using an older wine version, use the URL button to open an URL prompt.
* A recent version of wine for Linux is preferable, to minimize possible crashes.
* Opera has been set as user agent, to avoid errors in complex webpages with insufficient browser recognition.
* A Javascript button has been added. Reload the page after enabling or disabling javascript.
* Many additional Search Engines in the menu bar, opening in a new window.
* A general startpage is already in the bookmarks.
* Keyboard shortcuts:
Page back : (right)ctrl + left arrow
Page forward : (right)ctrl + right arrow
Close Window : (right)ctrl + down arrow
Go to home : (right)ctrl + up arrow

Download from rapidshare.com as zip file at :

http://rapidshare.com/files/181815799/K-Meleon-SM2.zip.html

or from rapidshare.com as 7z file at :

http://rapidshare.com/files/181816868/K-Meleon-SM2.7z.html

or from rapidshare.com as tarball for Linux at :

http://rapidshare.com/files/181817659/K-Meleon-SM2.tar.gz.html

Tarballs or 7z files can be extracted in Windows too with the 7-zip packer program.

Regards to all

The files msvcp71.dll, msvcr71.dll are in every official exe (but not in the 7z versions) installer by Dorian. Extract the installer with 7zip (Dorian owns the needed the build environment and can distribute them).

Fred, Some time ago, a free, limited version of the same compiler was distributed by MS ( MS sponsors free software :O plus smiling smiley). You can still find it via a search or may find it on old backups if You once were interested in such things. If You find it on HDD or CD ... it will give IMHO You distribution rights for the dlls.

that's a very enjoyable experiment

i thought lua was the only way to go with 1.9.. but this proves xul can be trimmed and be light.. i like it.

i was prompted for mfc71u.dll.. i found it somewhere on the hd and copied it to km1.9-exp folder. i've uploaded it there if anyone needs it:

@ Guenter

I prefer not to include the three dlls, to avoid any
possible conflict with the creator.
The files are in XP usually already present inside
the system32 folder, as far as I know, and if somebody
needs them in Linux, they should be easy to find with
little effort.
I hope that this 1.9 browser variation will work already
satisfactorily for others as well, be it in Windows or
in Linux with wine.

Regards and thank you for your interest.

that was very nicely done. works very smoothly on freeBSD 5.6 and naturally on win xp. main bug is the scrollbar.. it doesn't exist. not sure why..perhaps over-trimmed chrome because it seems that it also affects any xul/chrome extension.

Seems to be ok here.
Exept at the startpage, because it is not high enough to need scrollbars.
If you have them missing on other pages, try to remove
compreg.dat and xpti.dat in components. They will be recreated
at the next start, and I forgot to remove them. These files
should not have been in the package, because they are
different for different computers, although they get
overwritten normally by the correct ones for the system.
But sometimes the overwriting could fail.

Thanks, Fred! Great work! I love it! I also DO miss the scrollbar, however, and the easy to manage web finding configuration because of "lack of macro extension".

If it weren't for that it would become my daily browser right NOW, with CCFME in reserve as a high speed missile.

The scroll bar problem is solved, replacing classic.jar with a new one.
Strangely enough, the scroll bar was only missing in Windows, not in Linux,
where it worked for me.

The new download addresses for the improved version are :

I hope that it will work for you.
It is important to keep the user agent at Opera in Linux,
to avoid as many unwanted crashes as possible.
Some complex websites seem to have problems to
recognize K-Meleon as a 1.9 browser, and try loading
until the memory is used up. Please report about
your experiences in Puppy Linux.

P.S.: In Linux there is a little problem when
writing to this forum in KM-SM2.
The letters are not showing, but are encoded
to - I don't know what - wrong signs.
But you can write the message in an editor and
copy and paste it then into the textbox, before
sending the - still scrambled looking - text.
I have found no solution for that yet, and
in Windows it looks ok, may be even in your Linux distro,
but not in the ones I tried.

Regards

Fred

Thx for the SM version. Works fine here except for hotmail (can't open the messages - in status bar I get the message: c._old display') and for the address: http://webmail.hogent.be. It is the first time I got problems with these two addresses. Am I alone with that? Is there a remedy?

Thx a lot in advance,

Try and set custom firefox Firefox as User Agent String while using such sites.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008120122 Firefox/3.0

& try: set the value of general.useragent.vendor to empty string or delete it.

@Fred, I have stumbled on a new trick--new to me anyway, running K-Meleon on a Mac. It's Leopard 10.5.5 running Crossover Mac 7.1.0 and KM 1.5.2. My original goal was to run your SM2, but this was easier to start with. I'll let you know as I learn more. I'll be testing on Puppy and Arch also.

work on a Mac.

I had not thought of it either Fred--K-Meleon on a Mac--but I just came into a Mac. In case I didn't explain it clearly, Crossover adapted their version of Wine to run on the Mac's Darwin (not even requiring X11 I don't think). That was great marketing I think. Since I test K-Meleon and other software for them i get their software and so I downloaded Crossover Mac and it installed and ran easily and K-Meleon installed and ran easily also. This is another step toward the goal of every software running on every machine. It is all done with the gui and installers which is why 1.5.2 was easier than SM@--it has an installer. I should say that Crossover Mac only works with MAC OSX (because it's unix/bsd).

Hmmm, I have tried the improved version and also deleted the dat files, but still no scroll bar in Win XP SP4.

Must be something wrong with my 7z-packer, but it
should work now, from here :

http://one.xthost.info/eichhein2/K-Meleon-SM2.zip

I packed this with another zip program.
Sorry for the problems, I cannot find out the reason.
If this works ok, I will renew the other links as well.
It was the same with 7z and the tarball.

Thanks for the new upload Fred but I still cannot see the scrollbar.
Flashblock does not seem to work either. Maybe someone else can confirm.

On the other hand your lite version (discussed in another topic)
shows the scrollbar just fine and flashblock also works there
(after I add the required flashblock.jar and flashblock.manifest
files to the chrome folder)

thank you fred.

scrollbar fixed in windows..soccer, make sure to extract in new folder and not overwrite previous sm.. maybe a file didn't get updated.

the flashblock didn't work but fixed by copying embed jar from kmeleon to kmeleon sm. it worked in blocking but without the big play button showing..just doubleclicking will resume flash.

On my home PC, XP SP1 (yeah, I know!!) i still could not see the scrollbar.
I'll try again on a different machine later today.

And, regarding flash, since I did not see the big play button,
I did not try to make any further checks (as disrupted did).

I am afraid I have to agree with soccerfan, still no scrollbar in xpsp3 or 4 whichever it is, the most recent. I even deleted K-Meleon folders from Application Data (2 folders) and unzipped to a new folder. I am wondering if there is somethign we are overlooking, but I can't guess what it is.

I could download and unpack in XP, and had the
scrollbars.
Copying the same unpacked K-Meleon to Vista, the
scrollbar was gone. Strange.
I have now made a new chrome, which seems to work
and have uploaded a K-Meleon-SM2-W zip, which should
now work everywhere, I hope.

Chromework is unpredictable.

Fred, I did just now, and SUCCESS. The scrollbar shows up.
Reminder, this is on an XP machine.

As to flashblock, when activated, I cannot see the
big play button but clicking somewhere near where it
should be results in the video playing. This confirms
what disrupted reported (for your previous upload).

I tried using embed.jar from the official KM152 (after
applying the flashblock fix by Dorian/desga2) but that
made the scrollbar disappear once again and flashblock
issues remained identical to what I described above.
Hope this helps you track down and solve this issue.
