Yes, but I hope the development of Wine will
keep up with the speed of letting down Windows
versions.
K-Meleon used in Linux needs the support of
Wine as an intermediate, and I want to use
K-Meleon in Linux also in the future.

I agree with you, I ought to continue to use K-Meleon under Linux, but as you know, Windows isn't necessary to use wine.

Other thing, I'm making an extension for K-Meleon under Linux, to allow to use Linux nativ programs to open files.

It works, but I have some problems with mimetypes. I suppose I must add them to the registry.

Yes, that is our goal. It has nothing to do with trying to apply our
limited resources to where they can affect the most people.

On the bright side, SeaMonkey will be able to continue to support XP
SP1 and Win 2k, and thereby gain all those users, since per your other
message they'll just switch to another browser -- sounds like a real
opportunity for you.

@ xray

I am really hoping that this is true, because
K-Meleon is based on Seamonkey, not on Firefox,
and would be able to continue as it is for
users not willing to update to SP3 or using
Windows 2000.

@ jujuland

I am personally using right click macros to open
media files with the corresponding linux apps ,
as mplayer, xine, xmms, RealPlayer etc.
The target may be different, depending on the
location of the executable, but I did not have
to change mime types, as it would possibly be necessary
for a left click calling up.
A predefined macro for all users would possibly
only work, if the executable location would be at
/usr/bin/, and not if for example, it would have
been installed to /opt or a program subfolder.

Affected Users:

All users still running either Windows 2000 or Windows XP Service Pack
2 (or lower). As Service Pack 3 is a free upgrade for XP users, only
Windows 2000 users will be forced to change their OS to use the next
version of Firefox.

What?

Do they believe I will change my OS only to use Firefox, or in the case of a newer K-meleon version?

Come on....

The day K-meleon, if someday is being affected, I'll simply do the same I did with Netscape Communicator. Use it until becomes unusable, not because vulnerabilities but because webpage rendering.

@Fred,

It's not a contextual menu entry with a macro, but an external tool which take the parameter passed by K-Meleon when left clicking on a link (in fact it's a file in a temp local folder), change the path style from windows to linux, and then send the linux command with the right linux path/file.

It works for all the files having a 'content type' value in the registry (doc, xls, wav, mp3, .... all what you may imagine, without having to create a macro for a file type and another for another file type, and it can be global for one profile or for all the profiles of the same Linux user.

This extension restore in fact a basic function which doesn't work under Linux.

My problems were due to the missing 'content type' registry entries.

[edit]

In fact it was due to a K-Meleon bug (when ask each time is checked, it doesn't work, else it's ok). So no need to import reg files. Ouf !!!

If you succeed, it will be very helpful for Linux
users.

No, Kairo later stated that SM project cannot do it. The SM project will change to toolkit to reduce time needed.

What I found interesting was:

same thread
MinGW SeaMonkey seems to run fine on my Windows NT 3.51 tinderbox,
although someone complained that release builds crash on startup). So
dropping Windows 2000 would seem to be a little premature.

Or is this minimum requirements as in "Developers are not required to
ensure that code compiles with VC7.1 and runs on Windows 2000 but we
accept contributed patches"

Maybe old windows support can continue with other compiler or graphic toolkit options?
