Making K-meleon Default Browser

Is there some way to make K-meleon the default browser? I had to install IE 5.5 in order to run other software, and of course, IE makes itself the default browser without asking. I've now managed to make Netscape the default, but can't figure out how to make K-meleon the default browser. Is there a way to do this? Please reply to mareich49@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Search the forums asmpgmr has a nifty .reg script to do the trick. smiling smiley

Run it as needed (it also removes the ddeexec keys that mess up K-M, which the SetBrowser doesn't).

i've done it in Win XP Pro, just by using the "Set Program and Access Defaults" proggy. open k-mel, then open the Set Program & Access Defaults, choose Custom (the third and final option), then "Choose a Default Web Browser" and tick "Use my current Web Browser", but i also tick the option to "enable access" to IE. my McAfee Online Virus Scanner can't do it's updates using K-Mel, and without access to IE, i can't update it. sad smiley

i also go into IE's Tool/Internet Options/Programs to the bottom and uncheck the option for IE to check if it's the default browser. it's just flat out annoying to me.

then i reboot and i'm good to go. smiling smiley

The easiest way if you are not to computerish is this:

Rename your C:\Program Files\K-Meleon\ folder to:

C:\Program Files\K-Meleon_good\

Now reinstall KM again and accept all.

Once installed, you will have a new K-Meleon folder. Delete it, and ALL the contents.

Now rename:

C:\Program Files\K-Meleon_good\

back to

C:\Program Files\K-Meleon\

All is hunky dory smiling smiley

I've posted this in the past but here it is again, this regedit script will make K-Meleon the default browser and remove the DDE keys which can cause problems. If K-Meleon wasn't installed in the default location then the paths have to be changed.

SetBrowser does not remove the ddeexec keys, so it is not a good choice for setting K-M to default browser. K-M must have the ddeexec keys removed in order to function properly. Problems people have had in the past that have been due to the ddeexec keys include:

Failure to fill in the "To:" field when email links are clicked.
Opening two windows when local files are opened.
Failure to open FTP sites.
Failure to use K-M as default browser from certain programs.
&c.

Better late than never.

Did Setdefault.exe file exist when this question was first asked in April 2003?

AFAIK no - alain improved it more recently. Make default was a FAQ in 2003.
