Updating user language in Notepad ++

It appears that I need to update the user defined language file for K-Meleon in Notepad ++. That file is an XML file. I am unsure if I can update it using Notepad ++ because the file is used when the program runs. Does anyone know if updating part of Notepad ++ using Notepad ++ will work or will I mess something up?

I need to add "$CommandLine" in the list for words1 and also add "iniread" and "iniwrite" in the list for words3. These are new items in KM and were not in the original list from desga2.

OK, I used WordPad when Notepad ++ was not running. No nice formatting in Wordpad but it got the job done.
