Improved working under linux

I don't know exactly which is the reason of this, but since I have upgraded to Linux 2.6.27.24 (Gnome 2.24.1) and to Wine 1.1.28, I have less crash (none in fact for now), and Ubuntu is faster than before.

K-Meleon is always faster than Firefox, under Ubuntu too.

Happy ...

That is great news. I have a test machine running Ubuntu 9.04 and as soon as I learn enough to do it, I will try KM over there. I can see that my Gnome is 2.26.1, but I have no idea what is my Linux version. Can you describe what to run to find that information?

In a terminal, write :

uname -a

This will give you information about your Linux kernel.

Since my yesterday's post, I have crash K-Meleon once, it's not a good news, but it's perhaps because I have set the userstring to the one I give in my posts.

I have, for the time I have no crash, the Seamonkey 1.1 userstring and it's perhaps the reason. I have put again Seamonkey to confirm if it can be the problem.

I use 8.10, because of my ISDN connexion. I had so problems to make my connection to work, than I'm a little afraid to have the same problems after update. So my Linux version, and gnome version are lower than with 9.04.

But I confirm that Ubuntu is quicker with the version I have now than the previous, and it probably ought to be quicker with 9.04...

You can also use the system manager (system tab) to display the versions.

I am still experimenting with many different Linux distros,
but have not tried one of the new 9.10 Ubuntu alphas yet.
I will have to try Wine 1.1.28, and look how it works.
To use in Linux, I still like my NX variation most, which
is comparatively stable, but I must mention, that I mostly
do not use tabs, but new windows. KM-NX-18123 is still based
on 1.0, and does not have real tabs, but the old layers, which
are less stable in Linux than tabs. But I prefer new windows anyhow.
I also use javascript very rarely, and in case it is really
needed on a page, I can quickly enable it, using the javascript
button. Because of that, extensions (which are not supported
in the NX version) are less essential for me, and stability
in Linux is easier to achieve. Regrettably it is already
becoming harder to update NX now, because the release of
Seamonkey 1.1.18 has changed its architecturein in a way that
most of the dlls have now been integrated in a big static build
of seamonkey.exe and are not in the folder components
anymore, from where they could be taken to be used in
K-Meleon. To make an update to K-Meleon-18123, I had to resort
to a separate GRE from the nightlies. As to the 1.9 variations
for Linux, which will soon be the only ones that will be
updatable from Mozilla, it is now easier to derive them
from Firefox , where the dlls are in a separate Xul file,
that can be used, while firefox.exe is still non-static and small.
I chose this way for my KM-F352 variation, which works well
in Linux and should be still updatable as long as the architecture
of the current Firefox is being maintained.
The K-Meleon 1.6 alphas do unfortunately not work for me
in Linux up to now, and the 1.5 versions will soom become
obsolete, because Seamonkey will change to Gecko 1.9 only and
updates of Gecko 1.8 will not be available anymore. So my
hopes for the future are focussed on my KM-F352 variation.

Regards
Fred

P.S :
I have tried wine 1.1.28 now. I had to convert the .deb to
tar.gz first with Alien to make it usable in all different distros.
Javascript seems to run smoother and stability seems to be
better with 1.1.28.

Yes, once I found that System Monitor was not the display, but really was the system.

Thanks
