unofficial variation: K-Meleon-SM2pre

I have uploaded an updated unofficial variation K-Meleon-SM2pre .

Download at :

http://two.xthost.info/eichhein4/K-Meleon-SM2pre.zip

This is an experimental version, using parts of the upcoming K-Meleon generation and based on Gecko 1.9.1.5pre , from Seamonkey 2.0 pre.
I had to use Gecko from Seamonkey Tinderbox .

My intention is to present an 1.9.1 variation that works in Windows, but also in Linux with wine, where the conditions to work are more difficult for K-Meleon than in Windows.

--Note : This version works only, if you have the files msvcp71.dll, msvcr71.dll and mfc71u.dll in your system or in your K-Meleon main folder. If you need these dll's, look for them in the Internet. If necessary in Linux, put them into the K-Meleon main folder. The profile will be created inside the K-Meleon folder. If in Linux you want it inside the ".wine" folder, because of user rights problems, rename the file profile.ini to profile.ini-renamed before the first start.
If you have starting problems, try to delete compreg.dat and xpti.dat in the folder components.
I have added these files, because in Vista earlier variations refused to build these files at the first start
.
--Opera has been set as user agent, to avoid errors in complex webpages with insufficient browser recognition. In Linux the URL bar is only usable with more recent wine versions. If you are using an older wine version, use the URL button to open an URL prompt. A recent version of wine for Linux is preferable, to minimize possible crashes.

--A javascript button has been included. After changing permissions for javascript, reload the page.

--Many additional Search Engines in the menu bar, opening in a new window.

--A general startpage is already in the bookmarks.

--Keyboard shortcuts:

* Page back : (right)ctrl + left arrow
* Page forward : (right)ctrl + right arrow
* Close Window : (right)ctrl + down arrow
* Go to home : (right)ctrl + up arrow

Regards

WOW!!! :O

EDIT: Best ratio memory/speed yet for a 1.5x KM. Lightining fast, with a memory footprint of around 50 MB. Most of previous SM2 versions limitations still apply...

Note: See previous review, if interested.

Hi Fred, i am getting confused (which is nothing new for me). What are the differences between 353 and this sm2 pre? There was a previous SM2, am I right? Does this succeed 353? Well, I know 353 is built with Firefox 3.5.3--and that uses gecko 1.9.1.x. Then SM2 is built with the seamonkey 2beta, which also uses gecko 1.9.1.x. Am I right that neither of them uses kmeleon 1.6.

I found another fast browser for Linux, by accident. I had not used Epiphany for quite a while, but I installed Arch Gnome and it was installed by default. I tried it with the Peacekeeper browser benchmark and it was the second fastest browser that I ever tested in linux (Iron and Chromium being the fastest). This is Epiphany (webkit) which even identifies itself as Safari! Peacekeeper is not the be all and end all of course. There were also some issues with plugins, but it was a pleasant surprise to see Epiphany run so fast.

K-Meleon-F353 is based on Firefox 3.5.3, while K-Meleon-SM2pre
is based on a recent nightly similar to Seamonkey 2.0 RC (Release Candidate).
Firefox as well as Seamonkey in their releases do not have their
dlls in the folder components anymore.
Firefox contains a big file xul.dll which unites the dlls, which were
before separately in the components folder. I could use this file
as it is in K-Meleon-F353.
Seamonkey 2.0 has these dlls integrated into seamonkey.exe, which
cannot be used directly in K-Meleon-SM2pre, but the dlls would
have to be extracted, to be used in the components folder.
Therefore I had to resort to Seamonkey's Tinderbox, where I
found the dlls still in the components folder of the nightly,
before they have been integrated into a big seamonkey.exe.
The nightly was from october 13th, and the Gecko 1.9.1.5pre,
which means that they are probably even newer than the Gecko
in Seamonkey 2.0 final will be, which is due to be released
in a couple of days already.
Both K-Meleon variations work quite well in Linux, and I hope
that I can carry on updating them as long as possible,
because I doubt that K-Meleon 1.6 will run in Linux with
wine, because it uses the 80's runtimes, which seem not to
be supported well in wine up to now.
I welcome the fact, that the development of Epiphany seems
to go on, after it was supposed, that its development
would be stopped a while ago.

Today Seamonkey 2.0 has been released.
It has Gecko 1.9.1.4/20091014 .
As this variation K-Meleon-SM2pre, which is based
on a nightly from Seamonkey Tinderbox,
has Gecko 1.9.1.5pre/20091013, it can be
regarded as updated to the current safety standard
of Seamonkey 2.0 final and Firefox 3.5.4 which will
probably be released soon.
