updated variation : K-Meleon-F354

I have uploaded a new updated unofficial variation K-Meleon-F354 .
It is based one the latest Firefox354, Gecko 1.9.1.4/ date 20091016

* This is an experimental version, using parts of the upcoming K-Meleon generation and based on Gecko 1.9.1.4 .
* My intention is to present an 1.9 variation that works in Windows, but also in Linux with wine,
where the conditions to work are more difficult for K-Meleon than in Windows.
* This version works only, if you have the files msvcp71.dll, msvcr71.dll and mfc71u.dll in your system or in your K-Meleon main folder.
If you need these dll's,look for them in the Internet. If necessary in Linux, put them into the K-Meleon main folder.
* The profile will be created inside the K-Meleon folder. If you want it inside the ".wine" folder,
because of user rights problems, rename the file profile.ini to profile.ini-renamed before the first start.
* In Linux the URL bar is only usable with more recent wine versions.
If you are using an older wine version, use the URL button to open an URL prompt.
* A recent version of wine for Linux is preferable, to minimize possible crashes.
* Opera has been set as user agent, to avoid errors in complex webpages with insufficient browser recognition.
The user agent can be changed in the menu Tools.
* A Javascript button has been added. Reload the page after enabling or disabling javascript.
* Many additional Search Engines in the menu bar, opening in a new window.
* A general startpage is already in the bookmarks.

* Note : This is just a proof of concept, not a polished final version, so some things may not work yet.

* Keyboard shortcuts:
Page back : (right)ctrl + left arrow
Page forward : (right)ctrl + right arrow
Close Window : (right)ctrl + down arrow
Go to home : (right)ctrl + up arrow

Download the zip file at :

http://one.xthost.info/eichhein3/K-Meleon-F354.zip

If in Vista the Internet is refused using a user account, start it once (but only once) as an administrator.
This should enable Internet access for the user account as well.

Regards to all

Hello Fred, thanks for the new version. I would really like to test it, but you know, I need a mirror again... (easy-share, hotfile, mediafire or megaupload)

I must say that K-Meleon works very good under Linux, very fast (faster than Firefox and much more faster than Opera, btw), no crashes and almost no bugs. One thing: the possibility to move each toolbar to a higher or lower position would be very nice.

@ Matt

Thank you for the additional possibilities for downloading.

@ linuxuser

Wine does not support drawing a toolbar to another place
up to now in Linux.
But the position of the toolbars can be changed by editing
pref.js and skin.js in the folder /defaults/profile and
/defaults.
Editing has to be done browser closed.
prefs.js in an existing user profile has to be edited in this
user profile, because it will not be overwritten.
index defines the relative position of the toolbars.
prefs.js and skin.js have to be saved keeping the
ending .js (not .js.txt).

@ jose

I have not tested Adblock with this variation.
If you want to install it, try to move the files
compreg.dat and xpti.dat in the folder compononents
to another place to backup them.
When restarting the browser they should be recreated
including the correct position of the browser in
your system.
I have included the two files because some systems
had difficulties to create the files (e.g.Vista).
If the browser should deny restarting, you can
paste the two files back from the backup.
Nevertheless I am not sure if extensions like Adblock
would work.

@ Jose
I was mistaken about the files compreg.dat and
xpti.dat.
They still exist in my variation K-Meleon-SM2pre,
but not anymore in K-Meleon-F354.
So it has nothing to do with these two files.

The flash plugin npswf32.dll has to be copy and pasted to the
folder "plugins" (not kplugins) inside the K-Meleon main folder.
The javascript button J has to be enabled. Check enabling in
the status bar.
Flashblock can be on, this will put a flashblock button into the
the Flash window. Press it to start accepted flash movies.
Some wanted Flash may be blocked by the file adblock.css
in your profile. Css ad-blocking can be blocked temporarily or
continuous in /Edit/Preferences/Page Display/Content Filters.
Css ad-blocking is generally useful and efficient, if Adblockplus
is not installable.

@ jose

As it looks the Adblockplus extension would have to be
rewritten to work with K-Meleon-F354.
As this is only an extperimental variation, it is unlikely
that this will happen soon.
Adblock for Firefox could not be used as it is.
But ad-blocking by css is included and works quite well
for ads in general, although there is no possibility to
block specific ads out of the box (could be done editing
usercontent.css including some particularly annoying ads).

The history kplugin should work OK.
Go to a first website and press the the shortcut
CTRL + H.
The history window should pop up.
Sometimes the shortcuts stop working suddenly,
but after a browser restart all is working again.

The gestures kplugin is not included, because it does
not work yet in this variation.

Note that my variations K-Meleon-F354 and K-Meleon-SM2pre
are not previews of the upcoming official K-Meleon 1.6.
The official new K-Meleon is built using the 80's runtimes
while my variations are only attempts to keep the old
versions built on the 70's runtimes going on working
with Gecko 1.9.1.x .
The main purpose of these variations is to keep
K-Meleon working in Linux, where the emulator Wine
does unfortunately not support builds using the 80's runtimes
sufficiently up to now. It may be welcome that these
variations can be used in Windows as well, but as soon
as an official K-Meleon 1.6 will be released this official
version will be preferable for most users.
As I have neither the means nor the knowledge of Dorian
it is not probable that my variations will get to a more
polished state, where everything will work as perfect as
in an official version. I basically try to achieve only
the functions that I need personally to use the variation
in Linux with Wine.

i understand now.
your start page is very convenient,i changed it some places. and i use it now.

but one thing puzzled me, when i use your search box in the start page, it renders quite slow even if i use google or other search engines.

For most searches it is better, to use the search button
(left click for Google, right click for more search engines)
or engines from the menu bar - SpecialSearches1 and 2 - for
a special restricted purpose.
The search box on the startpage is just an add-on, useable in all
browsers which use this startpage. The multi-searching in this case is
provided by the CUSI protocol, provided by a cgi-bin at the
technical university of Chemnitz, which is one of several
universities all over the world that offer this protocol that
makes possible many different searches all from the same search box.
The search strings can be altered to your liking for more
search engines that you want to include, for example personal
searches that you installed at Rollyo.com, or searching Google
with particular personal parameters, where to search (by country or
when given keywords are present), or depending
when the resulting pages were added to Google.

Firefox 3.5.5 has been released.
As this update is only a stability update, and it is not
a security update (no vulnerabilities have been fixed),
it is only necessary for people who had regular crashes
with 3.5.4 .
This means also, that it does not concern my variation
K-Meleon-F354 , based on Firefox.
An update for security reasons is not necessary.
