Cache

I do not understand how to make the cache work. K-Meleon never keeps it.
I have tried a lot of settings. Currently they are Memory Cache at
400 mb, Disk Cache at 300 mb and under Cache Comparison I have marked
to always load from the cache. Please help sad smiley

I'm not sure about this -- so YMMV -- but I think you need to change your browser status to offline (menu "File | Work Offline") to be able to surf the browser cache...

Thanks foobarly but I am sorry I was not clear. I thought that was for more
than offline use. As far as I know all other browsers from IE to Firefox,
Opera, etc. can use this function to not have to redownload a web page
each time you return to it. Even in offline status both my Memory Cache
and Disk Cache are almost always completely empty. I do not have anything
set to empty them. And I never manually empty them. It is very puzzling.

Are the respective paths set in Preferences valid? (F2: Network/Performance | Cache)

Can you browse the folder(s)? Are the permissions right? Maybe you should create a new profile to see if it has the same problem...

also make sure nothing is set to clear automatically on startup or exit(tools>privacy>clear data>clear automatically) make sure cache or history are not checked in that dialog)

as foobarly has mentioned..especially in vista, it's crucial to have rights for certain folders when using a roaming profile or km will not be able to create cache files.

Thanks foobarly and disrupted. I use Windows Xp. The only thing I have
set to automatically clear is cookies. I do not know how to check the
permissions. Yes, I can browse the folders. Also I do not know what
a roaming profile is. :s
Please help.

A cache size of about 60MB is more than enough for typical browser use.

Is your XP version Home or Professional? In the later case, just right click the folder, select 'Properties' and check the 'Security' tab for its permissions; if it's the former, then you'll have to Google for solutions on security enabling/checking.

I have XP professional. When I right click it has 3 tabs which are General,
Sharing and Customize. Sharing does have in it Local and Network Sharing
and Security. It just says to drag the folder into Shared Documents folder
to share with other users. But all my browsers and other prgrams are
shared with everyone. That is just me. I have set up only one profile
on the computer. It is the Administrator.
Also does it matter if using regular or portable K-Meleon? I thought only
difference is that portable version is automatically shared with all users
of the computer.

Have I opened the wrong thing? :s

After checking I noticed that my work computer shows the security tab and my laptop does not, even if they both have Windows XP Pro. As I can't tell you why right now, I guess Google is your friend on this...

The portable version might get restricted if you decide to set it up in the place where the regular version would be -- that is inside the 'Program Files' hierarchy, where regular applications usually lack read/write privileges.

Thanks foobarly for your help. All my computers are Windows XP professional
with service pack 2. I must have checked at least 100 of my programs for
this. On all the folders in program files they only have 3 tabs which are
General, Sharing and Customize. That is the same for the regular and the
portables. And in Application Data contained in Documents and Settings
all the folders are the same. They have only 3 tabs which are General,
Sharing and Customize. All the computers are desktops. So I do not know
where to find this Security tab. sad smiley

Also I have the programs on a different partition from the operating system.
So the programs are not on the usual Drive C. I do not know if that matters.
This may not either but the hard drive is around a terabyte. It is over
90% empty. So there is plenty of room.

But I guess the real problem here is that I have no Security tabs. :s

Scroogle has been of no help. Any ideas regarding search terms?

Eureka! I was able to fix my laptop with his:

http://imar.spaanjaars.com/QuickDocId.aspx?quickdoc=286

Bottomline: disable "simple network sharing" to get access to the 'security' tab in file/folder properties...
