unofficial variation : K-Meleon-1.5.3-Gecko-1.9.1

It really seems as if nothing moves anymore to
fix vulnerabilities in Seamonkey 1.1.18 .
I have made up my mind to make an unofficial variation
K-Meleon-1.5.3-Gecko-1.9.1 based on Seamonkey 2.0
to offer a temporary updateable alternative for people that
are concerned about security.
This is an experimental version.
The main purpose of this variation is the possibility of further security updates, using
Gecko 1.9.1 instead of 1.8 , which is no longer supported by Mozilla .
This version works only, if you have the files msvcp71.dll, msvcr71.dll and mfc71u.dll
in your system or in your K-Meleon main folder. If you need these dll's, look for them
in the Internet.
It should work in Windows XP , Windows Vista and in Linux with Wine.
Windows 98 is probably not supported anymore by Gecko 1.9.1 .
The profile will be created inside the K-Meleon folder by default.
Don't overwrite your existing profile.
If in Linux you want the profile inside the configuration folder ".wine",
rename the file profile.ini to profile.ini-renamed before the first start.
Firefox can be set as user agent in the menu Tools/User Agent,
to avoid errors in complex webpages with insufficient
browser recognition.
An additional Phoenity skin with a Javascript button has been added. Reload the page
after enabling or disabling javascript.
A general startpage is already in the bookmarks.
Some functions may not work in this variation, consider that it is only experimental.
Extensions may work or won't work. I have not tested them.

Interesting. pageflakes dot com doesn't work on KM 1.5 official or on this version or Seamonkey 2.0. Works on your previous SM2pre & F354 KM builds though. Also works on KM 1.1 official. Anyone know why?

In KM-SM2pre and in KM-F354 I had set the user agent
default to Opera , while in this variation I have set
it to Default K-Meleon.
Opera is not in the user agents selection in the
official settings, but setting the user agent to Firefox
should work as well.
I had changed the user agent before, because K-Meleon
with 1.9.1 may sometimes not be recognized as a valid
existing browser. If Opera should be better, the string can
easily be added in prefs.js or even in Tools/UserAgent/Custom.

Yeah it's just a silly UA setting. Don't know how I missed that. I usually surf w/FF's string. Somehow I changed it back to Default and forgot.

For an old Opera 9.02, the user agent string would be for example

Opera/9.02 (Windows NT 5.1; U) [en]

I can add a download link for Rapidshare :

This is only a temporary download link for people with no
access to the main link at xthost. If possible, use
the link from xthost :

jsnj,

UA settings can be tricky. Had to add a custom string for a couple of sites that would no longer take FF2 user agent string.

In defaults\pref\110n.js

// Privacy

pref("kmeleon.privacy.useragent1.name", "Firefox 2.0");
pref("kmeleon.privacy.useragent1.string", "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.20) Gecko/20081217 Firefox/2.0.0.20");
pref("kmeleon.privacy.useragent2.name", "SeaMonkey 1.1");
pref("kmeleon.privacy.useragent2.string", "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.23) Gecko/20090825 SeaMonkey/1.1.18");
pref("kmeleon.privacy.useragent3.name", "FireFox 3.5.3");
pref("kmeleon.privacy.useragent3.string", "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.9.1) Gecko/20090624 Firefox/3.5 (.NET CLR 4.0.20506)");

(Guess I should update that to FF 3.5.5. SIGH

Fred,

Thanks for the variaiton. Much needed for some of my sites that absolutely require JavaScript. Now to see if SM will do anything with the off again, on again SM 1.1.19 with Gecko 1.8 bugfix.

you'll have to wait for an official announcement from Mr. KaiRo on an upcoming SM 1.1.19 release, ndebord. it could be due out by the end of December or sometime in the start of 2010. again, nothing is for sure on the next official gecko 1.8.x fix until KaiRo says so now that he came back from his long vacation about a week ago.

4td8s,

Let's hope he can get a bug fix through. As you say, let's hope for an Xmas present!

ndebord,

it looks like we'll have to wait longer - perhaps sometime in 2010. there are no immediate plans of a Seamonkey 1.1.19 release and no word whatsoever from KaiRo if and when it will be available.

though interestingly enough, the MozillaWiki Releases page seems to mention an upcoming Thunderbird 2.0.0.24 release but that one has yet to be determined.

Will be AFAIK good enough. You can run K-Meleon in a dynamic TB build. grinning smiley

IMO You need the fixes not that any can pull a stable release.
