Extracting Images from Microsoft Word Documents

Method 1

The best way to obtain the image is to save the Word document as a web page. This method will give you the image in its original size and format and the thumbnail in jpg format. Go to the Office Button, Save As, and Other Formats. Then in the Save as dialog window, choose ‘Web Page (*.htm;*.html)’ from the drop-down, select where to save it, and enter a name for the file.

After saving as a web page, you can go to the location where you saved it and you’ll see a .htm file and a directory. Inside the directory, you’ll find a few files and the images. In this case, the original image is saved as image001.png because that was the original format. There is also image002.jpg which is the thumbnail you actually see in the image.

This method is nice because it gives you all the images from the document in one fell swoop.

Method 2

The second best method is to copy the images from Word into PowerPoint. This method will give you the image in its original size and format.

Right-click on the image in the Word Document and choose ‘Copy’ from the context menu. Then in a blank PowerPoint presentation, right-click on a slide and choose ‘Paste’. The image should now appear on the slide.

Next, right-click on the image in PowerPoint and go to Save as Picture… This will open a save dialog and you can save the image where you’d like it and in most common formats.

Method 3

The third method works for images that are not scaled down inside the Word document, but it will work for any image. This method will give you the thumbnail is whatever format you save it as.

Right-click on the image in Word and choose Copy.

Open your photo editor and paste the copied image into a new image.

Sikuli Sikuli is an open source scripting app that uses a combination of very simple commands like click, type, and wait, and screenshots to tell Sikuli what to manipulate. There's no internal API support, it just searches the screen for the image in the screenshot—meaning you can use it with pretty much anything.

Quix Quix is an extensible bookmarklet, that allows you to easily access all your bookmarks and bookmarklets, across all your browsers, while maintaining them in only one spot. All you have to do is remember the shortcut for the bookmarklet, so, basically, it’s like a command line for your browser!
