antivirus program scan option

I installed an antivirus program and it gives me 3 options for real-time, in the background, scanning: scan when reading, scan when writing, scan when reading and writing. Scan when reading and writing seems to be the safest choice but I've read somewhere that this setting will slow my computer down. Someone else said scan when writing is all I needed. What do you think?

read this article in its entirety
http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2007/02/choosing-anti-anti-virus-software.html

if you're convinced:

viruses and antiviruses is a vicious endless war and the only casualty is the user..and both antivirus companies and virus writers are profiting. you can choose NOT to be part of this circle if you want. been computing for many years on macs, freebsd and windows without any antiviruses or all that other rubbish and with out a single virus..all it takes is a little common sense and simple security measurements.

The antivirus program I'm using is "Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus, version 10". After using AVG Free and Avast Free, I thought I would try Avira Free after reading a thread on Avast 5! on another K-Meleon Forum.
I don't recall AVG or Avast giving me 3 options for real-time scanning, that's why I asked which of the 3 options is best. Maybe an Avira user will post which option they chose and why.

Maybe not... Just go with the default setting.

Configuration :: Guard
Scan
You will normally want to monitor your system constantly. To this end, use the Guard (= on-access scanner). You can thus scan all files that are copied or opened on the computer "on the fly", for viruses and unwanted programs.

Scan mode

Here the time for scanning of a file is defined.

Scan when reading

If this option is enabled, the Guard scans the files before they are read or executed by the application or the operating system.

Scan when writing

If this option is enabled, the Guard scans a file when writing. You can only access the file again after this process has been completed.

Scan when reading and writing

If this option is enabled, the Guard scans files before opening, reading and executing and after writing. This option is enabled as the default setting and is recommended.
