what is stopping the BBC iPlayer from working on both K-Meleon and Firefox when it works perfectly on IE?

No idea, probably a plugin thing, since there must be different plugin versions for different browser engines. But post this in general section, will be seen there by LOTS more people ;-)

The BBC iplayer works correctly for streamed radio
and radio on demand.
For TV you must be an UK resident, or you must have a
VPN connection to a british provider (which possibly
would not be legal).
Do you have javascript enabled for Flash ?

for non-uk residents, this extension enables viewing the bbc iplayer and itv broadcasts through a uk proxy address. if the preconfigured proxy is down, please update through another proxy. check the included tutorial tools>proxy>bbciplayer set>quick help.
