As it was a "dropper". Or in human words, an attachment in a mail, or an URL in a mail that people followed, downloaded and run :/

People no following a minimum set of precautions.

Not a new story.

The bigger impact here was the spread across the LAN, as a worm, through that SMB vulnerability.

The main target of WannaCry cryptor was the corporate users market.

So I think there isn't too much sense in patching XP used mostly by home users now.

Anticryptor practices should include administrating of permissions, scripting host restrictions and other preventing actions - aside from patching OSes...

You have some algorithm disabled.

Check for preferences in about:config?filter=security.ssl3 if you have some disabled.

In a true & literal sense - it is just absurd to speak of something that was never alive to begin with in such terms - and this casts a truly pathetic shadow upon all the corpies spouting such misinforming nonsense to promote whatever agenda of control they favour.

So, in slightly more accurate terms - is it gone - has it vanished ??
Far, far from it.

People planet wide continue to use it daily as their main OS & ONLY allow themselves to be forced into any of the newer, lobotomized OSes when it can no longer be repaired for some reason.

Lots of installation media for it still circulates widely along with fixes for activation concerns as well.

And many who favour the classic desktop setup of the older windows just move over to Linux with lots of good choices for all sorts of work alike apps as well as easily being able to continue using their older windows apps in an even more stable environment.

Bottom line as I see it is that many folks are offended by how their lives can be affected by the corpies trying to force their agendas of convergence upon us.

If I wanted ALL my tech gear to be a confusing mishmash between what it was before and a windows phone - I could mess it up all on my own.

Shoving such ruination down my throat - or those of many others doesn't work well.

So - getting back to the verbiage as presented:
It is VERY MUCH alive, thank you - despite all efforts to make folks think that the efforts to 'kill it off' are succeeding.

Why "cynics" to begin with?

Better? Instead of self-flattery why not let the user to decide himself what's better for him.
Faster? It's the underlying hardware that makes it faster not the OS itself.
More secure? Ironically, the SMB exploit (WannaCry) didn't work on XP, in contrast to Win7 and Win10.
So it was a symbolic patch for XP giving the false impression that it is was equally exposed as newest MS operating systems were.
