smallhagrid ... I sent you a PM ... I was not interested in posting the information or even mention that I had this Franken Moon version. I am using some items or information from three different projects ... the last PM XP 26.5.0 portable version, the last New Moon update from roytam1 and the last update from petrus dated Oct 7th and none being my project. It's truly a Frankenstein mix of sorts.

I am thinking you maybe do not need the last PM XP version just get the Oct 7 petrus version (which is portable) and then add the last roytam1 version to the Bin folder ... there is no Bin folder in the roytam1 version, only the petrus version and also the last PM portable XP version.

This should work to have a nice portable updated New Moon version as of last Friday.

I will post the links needed:

New Build!

32bit https://o.rthost.win/palemoon/palemoon-27.7.0a1.win32-git-20171104-39bf9f15c-xpmod.7z

64bit https://o.rthost.win/palemoon/palemoon-27.7.0a1.win64-git-20171104-39bf9f15c-xpmod.7z

Official repo changes since my last build:
- Broken selection system inside of a nested contenteditable element (15c0d1a3e)
- Improve upmix function for mono sound to work on multi-channel setups. (77f0f43d8)
- Merge pull request #1434 from janekptacijarabaci/elements_contenteditable_1 (e59d0e25e)
- Fix Windows 10 detection in GfxInfo and remove obsolete entries. (e489cea1d)
- Enable paste event listener in documents with no editor component. (6d27a5221)
- Handle uninstalls of restartless addons in XPIProvider (69bc810f7)
- Сode style adjustment (332585f47)
- Merge pull request #1440 from JustOff/PR_restartless_uninstalls (0c11ba193)
- Version bump for new cycle. (4c1fd5f1a)
- Update README.md (4cbbddf8f)
- Port upstream patch for ICU to fix building with glibc 2.26+ on Linux. (617d3a392)
- Switch sync and key server to palemoon.org (39bf9f15c)

My changes since my last build:
- Update libvpx from Firefox 52
- Revert e489cea1d but leave Win10 fix
- Added a dummy console.clear() implementation, running such will produce an continuable error "Unknown Console API log level: clear" in javascript console instead of an uncontinuable "TypeError: console.clear is undefined"
---------------------------------------

That should work, then just keep up with any new roytam1 updates.

All those people are trying to get him to change the name and icons. I personally like 'New Moon' and the whole setup as it is. Keep some backups as the newer updates may be a problem ... hope not. Right now New Moon is a good fast browser with good security, at least it seems to be.

When you are finished ... take your new Franken browser over to the SSL Test Site and see what it tells you.

There is not much else to do ... you can do those steps I posted about in my Oct 06 post ... if you want to. Here they are again ... I like the Favorites tab over Bookmarks and also with K-Meleon, then they are always 'updated' as I update my Favorites folder. You can add your own User Agents or what I mentioned.

I should also add ... I only use the 32bit version. I have no idea or knowledge about the 64bit version. Also, I add Adobe Flash Player 27.0.0.183 (10-2017) into the Lib\Mozilla\Plugins folder.

I did a little additional 'cleaning up' with the final Franken version. I just did these items with this new version. So far the Browser seems OK, you can go through the items and maybe get rid of a few things or leave everything as is.

For instance, I didn't add the Uninstall folder from the latest roytam1 update. Since New Moon is now 'portable' ... I don't think that folder is needed any longer.

You may discover some other items that can be removed or changed. This is still a 'work in progress' for me. I don't have to tell anybody to do backups as you change, delete or add items. So easy to go back if something goes wrong.

I am not running into any problems for now.

That's about it ... get that petrus portable New Moon backup from October 7th as soon as possible and save it. He has not been around or posted anything over at MSFN in the New Moon thread and that download link could go dead or expire anytime ... I don't know.

-------------------- my earlier post.

Just a few extra adds or pointers that I use on Pale Moon and they also work on New Moon. They are not reqired but they are settings that I personally like and also use on K-Meleon, Pale Moon (last XP version) and now New Moon.

Many of you already probably know all these ... this would be just for 'new' people who might like them ... and that still includes me as I work on my own personal settings.

The original New Moon version supplied by roytam1 has Compatibilty set to Gecko Compatibility. The newer version supplied by petrus has Firefox Compatibilty set as the default. I think this might be better to aquire Firefox add-ons but I am not 100% sure about that ... it makes sense that it should be set to Firefox Compatibilty, not an expert on this however. You may want to check this setting in Options.

To get rid of the New Moon splash screen:

This is for Pale Moon but it works in New Moon.

Question - Any way to disable splash logo?

In the top directory where the "Palemoon-portable.exe" launcher is located there is a file called "Palemoon-portable.ini". Open this file and near the bottom ... locate the entry "ShowSplash=true" ... change the "true" to "false". Should work.

----------------------------------

If you don't want Favicons:

Favicons are those tiny little icons that are displayed in front of every bookmark and tab in the Mozilla Firefox web browser.

They can be used to identify a website next to the website title that is also always shown.

There are two core reasons why someone would want to remove favicons in the Firefox web browser.

The first reason is size. Bookmarks with favicons can take up to 10 times as much space on the computer hard drive than those without. While a difference between 3 Megabyte and 300 Kilobyte does not look like much it can make a difference especially in very large bookmark collections.

The second concern is privacy related as new favicons are requested by the web browser from the website itself.

The following article outlines how to block favicons from being created. It is recommended to backup all files that are mentioned in this article prior to making the necessary changes.

1. Firefox settings

The first step is to change settings in the about:config dialog of the Firefox web browser. Simply load about:config in the Firefox address bar and filter the list for the term browser.chrome. Change the following three parameters to the following values:

browser.chrome

browser.chrome.favicons - False
browser.chrome.image_icons.max_size - 0
browser.chrome.site_icons - False

You change values with a double-click on the value field.

This step does not get rid of existing bookmark favicons though but prevents the creation of future favicons in Firefox.

--------------------------------------

New Tab - Home Page

Is there a way to set Pale Moon to have new tabs open my home page?

Yes.

In about:config, find "browser.newtab.url" and set it to the desired address. Note that this setting will be overridden if you at a later point in time change the selection for New Tab in Pale Moon's options.

---------------------------------------

Pale Moon - Favorites

If you want Favorites instead of Bookmarks, then when you update the IE favorites, K-Meleon and New Moon are also updated at the same time.

PlainOldFavorites

PlainOldFavorites is a Mozilla Firefox extension that allows you to use the Internet Explorer and Windows Favorites directly from Firefox.

Hiding the "Bookmarks" menu

Starting with version 1.1 of PlainOldFavorites, you can use PlainOldFavorites addon options dialog to turn the default Firefox Bookmarks menu on/off. In Firefox main menu, select Tools > Add-ons then locate PlainOldFavorites and click on 'Options'.

If you like the "Favorites List" built into all versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer(IE) browser then you can still use this in Pale Moon (Firefox too) by installing the PlainOldFavorites(POFs) Add-on.

With this Add-on you can choose to use IE Favorites 'only' by hiding Bookmarks or run both lists in tandem. This is also a very easy way to keep identical Favorites lists across IE, PM and FF without any synchronising.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/plainoldfavorites/

-----------------------------

Pale Moon - Firefox User Agent Switcher

The User Agent Switcher extension adds a menu and a toolbar button to switch the user agent of a browser.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/user-agent-switcher/?src=search

... then you can add your own User Agents or use what is supplied in the download.

I deleted the User Agents that were supplied with Firefox User Agent Switcher and use these four User Agents in K-Meleon, Pale Moon and New Moon but they can be anything you want for your setup. I created a folder called Various and added them.

I like the idea of maintained Pale Moon builds for Windows XP, given the OS is literaly on the edge of life support now as most every major company is dropping support, it will be obsolete in maybe 2-3 years. However I tried it on my Atom netbook and went back to K-Meleon which treats the low-power computer better in my opinion.

Last Sunday roytam1 posted updated versions of the New Moon browser and also another browser project he is working on ... the Basilisk/moebius new build for XP!

It is on Page 16 near the bottom of the page. (MSFN XP Forum) under this thread:

My build of New Moon (temp. name) a.k.a. Pale Moon for XP

... I don't know much about the "basilisk/moebius new build for XP!" project. I am very happy using the New Moon browser with the latest updates.

short summary (if I got it right):
Fellow Gecko-engine browser Palemoon has stopped support for XP.
Meanwhile it also uses a special own engine "Goanna", that they forked from gecko.

In the MFSN forum independant developer roytam1 works on a variation of Palemoon for XP: "New Moon", and Callahan kept us updated with crosspostings from there:
==> http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/177125-my-build-of-new-moon-temp-name-aka-pale-moon-for-xp/?page=17

And a few days ago roytam1 also started a test build of KM76 with Goanna engine inside.
The discussion is going on in both forums now, over at MSFN and here at KM too.

===== SPLIT 1/2 ====

This big thread here was split in the middle, when roytam1 showed up himself here and started posting test builds for KM-Goanna! (G-Meleon?)
The second half is now moved here:
==> http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?19,143253

There's also a brandnew subforum just for Goanna-threads:
==> http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/list.php?19

I don't know whether to keep posting here about the New Moon browser and the work being done by roytam1 over at the MSFN forum. I guess anyone interested in the New Moon browser can just visit the thread over at MSFN.

There is usually more information and discussion over there so I will make this my last post here dealing with New Moon.

There was a new update of New Moon posted today by roytam1 ... 03 Dec 2017 and also a new update of the basilisk/moebius new build for XP!

roytam1 is busy and now he is coming here to help.

As a long-time, devout XP user (both directly & as a VM guest OS under Linux) I greatly appreciate these efforts and wish I had more available time to experiment with them.

The biggest questions occurring to me lately in regards to these wonderful browser variants concern the new vs. old rendering engines...but only from the user's POV.

So I ask:
What does it matter to the user himself which engine is in use ??

Is this only about making sure that 'modern' pages render & appear correctly ??

Does the choice of browser engine matter very much with regards to abilities to view YT videos ??

Aside of those types of queries, I see very little of value in most of the 'security' concerns, as better locks will always just result in better lock pickers;
Also, since the internut as whole is a wide open, public network - there is just too much silliness with regards to any imagined 'privacy'.

Referring to my 3 queries above then, I truly & sincerely ask:
Why should one care about which engine is under the hood of the browser ??

Thanks for any helpful replies !!

Please define "users".

novice users and advanced users may have different concerns.

Well...

As for me I see next points here:

1) Different engines at least have different possibilities. Even now when FF almost merges itself with Chrome in terms of extensibility techs, we still have Goanna/oldGeckos and Trident.

There IS real difference in using different things. Some users rely on multiple extensions existing only for 1 platform.

2) Speaking about security, I see that any non-Chrome browser is now more secure (not private) than 'Blinked' ones.

Well their engines are not safer by design sure, but Chrome as King of the hill became the primary target for malwares. It's real problem and threat.

If you think a little about avoiding malware attacks you should think about ENGINE you are choosing. It's true.

3) The general consideration: diversity is good. It's the thing that moves world ahead. And also software world.
End-user maybe shouldn't think about it everyday, but less diversity makes finally things worse for all of them. So they should.

Agreed.
BTW, how would you define an advanced users?
It's not a rhetorical question and I mean it. smiling smiley
Convenience, security and privacy don't really work together. By trying to make a compromise between them, one may end up with the least common denominator...

There are levels in my defined "advanced users":
Advanced Users Lv1: Make use of a lot of extensions
Advanced Users Lv2: Write their own userscripts/extensions
Advanced Users Lv3: Modify and/or Compile their own browsers

Is there a comprehensive up to date Wiki for Goanna's prefs available in "about:config"?
Does Goanna have hidden prefs not documented?

Those are unknown to me. You may dig in palemoon forum for that.

Hi Roytam1 & thanks for replying !!

For me it is like this:

I am a definite 1 for sure, though I have at times needed to edit a script or 2, I avoid anything like coding as that is not an interest of mine.

At the same time my 20+ years as what can be called an OS 'mechanic' (or hacker, if the correct definition is used...) has me aware of and avoiding most internut hazards quite deliberately, which helps alot when one prefers an older win32 based OS.

Thanks, and Best Wishes.

On the surface it looks like a great idea & project, but...:

Seems quite limited at present as shown below:

developer?
archlinux (for Arch Linux)- Broken. Platform needs development.

debian_stretch (for Debian 9.0) - Working

linux_portable (for any Linux system) - Partially broken. It may work on some platforms, but it still needs more testing and development.

macos (for macOS) - Working, but see following note....

opensuse (for openSUSE) - Unknown. Needs testing and development.

windows (for Windows) - Broken. Support needs to be re-added.

Any initiative which leads to less google invasiveness will be a good thing IMO, and with support for older versions of windows such works would be best of all;
-IF- they actually arrive.
Sadly, browser changes seem to be guiding other things a bit too much these days.

I have my doubts about any Chromitis suffering browser to be cured from Google's invasiveness.
Most (if not all) such projects are an one-man/developer show.
They take the source from upstream adding some modifications.
Imagine the time for parsing (and if neccessary sanitizing) the entire code (millions of lines).

I can only agree with you 100% Yogi, thanks.

Sadly, the entire internet experience has been a conduit for such invasiveness - and what with most folks oblivious, or ignorant (in the true meaning of the word...), or simply uncaring - it seems likely to be only getting MORE invasive.

Speaking just for myself, I avoid all things chrome as well as all the m$ internet products and OSes as the plagues that I consider them to be.

These are the same objections that I made during the height of the Compuserve/AOL era, when folks were all excited to 'have internet access' whilst remaining ignorant of the true natures of what they were paying for.

Now, it has gotten so extreme that the users have been cast into the molds of being the products;
The manipulation is now so very deep & intense as to foster & produce actual addictions & life changes - and those who made chrome as well as their oblivious users all thing it is all just GREAT.
