Over at the MSFN forum there was mention of this browser that I had not heard of. The site was down yesterday but seems to be up now. I didn't see any mention of it here but maybe there has been some discussion ... the link for anyone interested in trying it out.

It can never hurt to have a few good browsers handy for various web sites. However, this browser may be too complicated for me ... so I may not be using it.

I can understand K-Meleon and New Moon and that's a plus for me. I will fool around with it for awhile and see how it goes.

http://browser.taokaizen.com/

Here is a general description from the web site. I have not tried it yet but will do so after I post this ... will read what others also think. The new update is dated 12 Jan 2018 and this caught my eye mentioning both Meltdowm and Spectre.

Advanced Chrome
Google Chrome Fork - Chromium
For Windows (Windows XP, Vista, Win 7, Win 8, Win 10)

12.Jan.2018 - Updated Latest Build to 65.0.3320.0

New on version 65.0.3320.0:

Option to block javascript located on right click menu.
Webpage read mode option located on right click menu.
Protection versus Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities.

Advanced Chrome comes in 2 different versions:

Latest Build:

Build is almost stock and does not support NPAPI, JAVA, GDI, Silverlight and Windows XP... same as latest Google version but with important improvements.

Features of this version are:

Improved download system.
Option to block javascript located on right click menu.
Webpage read mode option located on right click menu.
Protection versus Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities.
No support for Windows XP.
No support for NPAPI plugins like JAVA, Silverlight...
Latest Beta WebKit with new HTML5 features.
Disabled Blurry fonts created by DirectWrite and Skia.
All Chrome stock features working.

Custom Build:

Custom Build is special since it contains a mix of different branches, mostly from chrome version 51 and some parts of versions 54 and 48.

Features of this version are:

Improved download system.
Compatible with Windows XP.
Not vulnerable versus Meltdown and Spectre.
Built for stability and compatibility.
DirectWrite can be disabled using chrome://flags
Disabled Blurry fonts created by DirectWrite and Skia.
Enabled NPAPI, this version runs JAVA and Silverlight.
Stable WebKit / Blink.
All Chrome stock features working.

Why Advanced Chrome? Google Chrome is the best browser but these problems on stock version are very annoying:

Saves all downloads into the same folder including the files that you just wanted to open without saving them, this folder is a huge mess.
Shows minimum information about your downloads, hard to check download speed.
SSL warnings disable passwords autocomplete.
Removed NPAPI support.
DirectWrite makes text look blurry and very hard to read.

Features of Advanced Chrome Web Browser:

General:

Improved Download System.
Allows to open, save or discard downloads.
Downloads show realtime speed.
Integrated Flash Player.
Option to block javascript located on right click menu.
Webpage read mode option located on right click menu.
Browser address bar show full URLs.
Enabled Password Autofill on self signed SSL sites.
Disabled Blurry fonts created by DirectWrite and Skia.
All Chrome stock features working.

Improved Download System Details:

Download Shelf that allows the following options:

Save: Downloads to default folder or prompts user for location.
Open: Downloads to temp folder and opens download when finish.
Discard: Cancel download.

Up to 999 downloads can be handled at the same time, they will stack and wait for user action.

Download Items with extended information:

Full download info including speed, time left and size (18/300MB, 3 mins, 840 KB/s).

New option on download context menu:

Hide download item.

Temp Folder for Downloads:

Allows to store downloads that are only going to be opened.
Located at %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Chromium\User Data\Default\Cache\Downloads
This folder is cleaned / deleted automatically when browser is closed.

Option to block javascript located on right click menu:

Press right click on background of the current page and quickly block javascript for that site.

Webpage read mode option located on right click menu:

Press right click on background of the current page and click on read mode to simplify content, focus on text and remove ads.

Howdy Callahan !!
What I see at their site that concerns me most is this part:

"Windows XP:
Copy From: C:\Documents and Settings\%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data

To: C:\Documents and Settings\%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Chromium\User Data"

As my C: drive is kept as free of program detritus as possible - and this is why I prefer truly portable or 'green' apps.

Aside of that I suspect that most K-Meleon users will be disappointed just because...its chrome, and lacks the classic browser effectiveness of K-Meleon.

Worthy of mention is that chrome-based browsers tend to be very resource intensive (hoggy) things as opposed to being slick & light like...K-Meleon !!

Lastly, there is likely still a Vivaldi build that works with XP SP2 as I have it and though slow & hoggy, it is portable and does work even though the RAM usage of it is quite high.
Being a variant of the 'new' Opera it is a cross between a classic browser and chrome - thereby somewhat less...yucky to use.

Best Wishes to All !!

smallhagrid ... thanks for the input on this browser. I downloaded it but did not try it out.

There was a new build released today or yesterday by roytam1 and I worked with that.

I may just pass on the chrome browser ... I have enough to keep me busy with the KM and New Moon updates.

Eexcerpt from their homepage:

Google Chrome is the best browser...

True but only the half truth.
Adding the missing half: "Google Chrome is the best browser to spy on and track clueless people."

Wonder how many dozens of extensions it would need to make it roughly configurable (whereas "roughly" will still be an overstatement).

WTF, Chrome doesn't even have an option for network configuration but kindly points the user to the network settings of the OS.

I'd better stop here before starting upset myself. smiling smiley

Yogi ... again thanks for more information. I have never used a 'chrome' browser over the years but they seem to be popular with some people. I have deleted my download.

I guess what caught my interest was the one line.

"Protection versus Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities."

... although I wasn't sure about the way it was said. I took it that you will have protection against Meltdown and Spectre ... but they use the word 'versus'. Is that complete protection or not? If the word 'against' was there instead of 'versus', it might read better.

Oh well ... no harm done, the 'warnings' are posted.

Hello Again Callahan & Kudos for being amongst the smarter folks !!!

Yogi - that was a GREAT reply, very, very enjoyed & appreciated, thank you.

Chrome:
Take a real browser...and then:
Make its default look dark & creepy like the zombie that it is;
Remove all text labels;
Subtract any/all REAL user controls;
Hide anything even remotely useful;
Make claims that it has LOADS of great extensions;
Make sure that most extensions are useless (except in name only);
Hawk it to gamers & other sorts of folks who prefer pictures over reading;
Put the power of Big G behind it so now too many sites are built SPECIFICALLY for it alone;
Dominate...stupefy...perfect for those who are oblivious to the obvious !!

"Protection versus Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities."

All statements on their homepage are addressed to clueless people and as such should be taken with a pinch (I'd recommend a pail) of salt.

The facts: One can enable Strict Site Isolation in Chrome and all of its derivates.
Quote

Theoretically this could help to mitigate against certain security risks, like those posed by Meltdown and Spectre
Strict site isolation is considered a highly experimental security mode and it is not without some potential drawbacks, mostly related to resource usage.

The above pref was available before Meltdown and Spectre but it was disabled by default because of the reasons mentioned above.

Google is still working on fixes for Meltdown and Spectre and some of them will probably address their EcmaScript engine as well.

The author is definitely not native English, hence the grammar errors on the site.

It's actually pretty decent for a Chromium-based browser, but privacy concerns relating to Google make me not want to use it, so I stick with trusty K-Meleon. ^^

Pale Moon community member Feodor2 maintains a fork of the official Pale Moon browser (dubbed "Mypal"), especially for XP:
https://github.com/Feodor2/Mypal

I tried it to see if it will run on XP SP2 & it worked splendidly !!!
This is very good news for me as it is very much like the 'old' FF & K-M.

My h/w is new-ish, so the following is not a problem forme, but:
The new bit of info to me was where someone wrote that the majority of browsers today will crash with 0x1d on systems with non-SSE2 CPUs.

Great, thanks !!
I quickly had a look there & saw no mention of whether that build requires SP3...
If it works well on SP2 I will be sure to give it a try.

I tried Basilisk lately and I thinkk it's really fast - good FF replacement.
