★ Video decoder (FFMPEG) libraries (aka LAV filters)
(alternative2: lite dlls for non SSE2)
(alternative3: fallback lite dlls with no optimized code)
(Explanation of the above 3 lav-types: on page 12)
Highly recommended to add support for H264 and avoid memory leaks while viewing some embedded videos
Source: https://o.rthost.win/palemoon/FFmpeg-ee567773-src.7z

May you add brief instructions at first post about how to install these additional things (this thread is too long and I don't find them)? ¬_¬

Absolutely, the Goanna-main-thread is one giant pot with everything wildly mixed and hard to dig through.
Would find it a lot easier too to have different subjects collected in separate threads. After all that's also why there's a whole subforum for it

And the Video/Multimedia etc. stuff especially is one big theme-group for itself, so finally here's an own thread for it.

Just for a start, some very useful info about mp4 video LAV-codecs was posted by hermes and rodocop, starting here:

Noticed only now that there are actually 3 different LAV-downloads linked in the first post. But all in 1 line, that makes it look like it were only one plus comments. Should be made easier recognizable.

Those 3 differ in compatibility.
First download is for modern SSE2-abled systems
Second is SSE2-independent.
Third is for extremely outdated old systems.

Or click here and scroll down a bit:

Feel free to simply copy your video tips and explanations in this thread here again, if you like, to easier find it smiling smiley

UPDATE 2018-01-04, tips from Hermes:

Meanwhile there exist 4 LAV versions, see next post by J.G.
Which one do you need? Acc. to Hermes:
Version-1 ("noasm") works well with ALL CPUs, incl. very old ones.
Version-2 ("mmx") works even slightly better, but requires a CPU with MMX (or SSE or SSE2). On those it's slightly faster and consumes less CPU-power compared to version-1.

Don't know if your CPU is capable of MMX?
If your system is Vista or younger, you can sure use version-2.
If your system is older: Perhaps, or not. Depends on CPU.

Quote
hermes
Windows 10 will not install on hardware without support SSE2.
The most optimized version (for Windows 8-10) with SSE2.
Windows 7 requires SSE (as minimum). Vista and below do not require SSE.
But Vista requires MMX.
XP / 2K3 / 2K can work on almost any of common processors (including very old).
Most versatile version without any instructions.
All versions will work (on Windows 10). The difference in usage to 6-7% CPU load (max).

If I correctly understood, it is reasonable to use lav-dll-lite-mmx not only as integrated kit (for 99.9% processors), but as the basis for future versions. Because it turns out that "full" LAV no make sense.

@Siria thank you for open this thread, so I will provide some help after read all the concise and useful instructions by @Hermes that helped me today:

At first post of topic by @Roytam1, http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?19,143253
you will find some ways to enable H264 support to KMeleon Goanna. However, member @Hermes has proposed one additional and interesting way (alternative 3), while member @Siria has proposed a new preferred order of installation:

1. Alternative 1: lite dlls with no hardware requirement, compatible for all CPU.
-- If you are not sure which filter to choose, read above comment by @hermes. *
https://o.rthost.win/palemoon/lav-dll-lite-noasm.7z
2. Alternative 2: lite dlls slighty faster for MMX-CPU, needs MMX, no SSE/SSE2 requirement.
https://o.rthost.win/palemoon/lav-dll-lite-mmx.7z
3. Alternative 3: slighty faster for SSE-CPU, needs SSE, no SSE2 requirement.
https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases/download/0.69/LAVFilters-0.69-x86.zip
4. Alternative 4: video decoder FFMPEG libraries, slighty faster for SSE2-CPU, needs SSE2.
https://o.rthost.win/palemoon/lav.7z

IMHO the easiest way is to install alternative 1 or 2, according to @hermes information on above post, compatible with all hardware the alternative 1, and mostly all (99,99%) the alternative 2 that needs MMX (both alternatives are useful also to use KMeleon Goanna as Portable version inside an USB while travelling or to install this amazing newest browser flavour on a computer's friend). Or simply if you want to have H264 support without unnecessary headaches nor hardware considerations.

You can also try the other three options as well. Alternative 4 is optimized for SSE2, option 3 for SSE. If something went wrong you can revert the changes deleting the installed files at their respective places -- please correct me or feel free to edit this post if I'm wrong in these terms.

The installation is quite simply: just download the file, extract all the content to KMeleon Goanna main folder (where k-meleon.exe is found) and restart the browser. To test if all is working fine, @Hermes has proposed an excellent method with a very light file containing some samples. Download the next file and extract the content on a temporary folder:
https://getfile.dokpub.com/yandex/get/https://yadi.sk/d/V1STQvqB3QUBfQ

Again following @Hermes instructions, then open KMeleon Goanna and press Control+O (or as @Siria said, drag them with the mouse into the browser window), then browse to the chosen temporary folder and select the files to be tested opening them one by one (file H265 will not work because there is still no support for this codec). That's all the help we can offer for now. smiling smiley

Note: edited to include @Hermes & @Siria valuable suggestions.

Just a few remarks, here it is not about quality (decoding for all types of libraries are similar), the difference is speed and processor loading. Although, sometimes results are contradictory (for speed).

http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?19,143253,144558#msg-144558 (and below).

It is also important to consider that there are LAV 0.69 (without SSE2, but with the requirement of SSE instructions).

https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases/tag/0.69 not universal, but can be useful.

http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?19,143253,143458#msg-143458 (and below).

Therefore, between the first and second should be filters LAV 0.69. There should be four points. The higher number, fewer the requirements for processor instructions. The difference in load between 1 and 4 is less than 7 percent. What to no say about versatility. Only seven percent of excess load for the fact that it will work everywhere seems a very reasonable compromise.
For powerful processors, this is nothing, but for the weak, the only chance to reproduce.

On multicore configurations (Core2quad) it is almost unnoticeable. By the way for quad-core LAV 0.69 operate worse than lav-dll-lite-noasm (see tests above).

@siria / @J.G.
I propose to change the number from 3 to 4. It will be correct.

I don't have your extended technical knowledge, but from my single perspective as user, if we are not talking about a quality question involving all this criteria, KM-Goanna should be released with at least the most compatible of them all to secure support for H264 from the beginning. IMHO I can't imagine a newbie user browsing around the forum to install the hidden newest non-official KMeleon version, then browsing again around the forum to find how to install H264 support from three possible options and so forth. Mostly considering that decoding for all types of libraries are similar because the user can simply give up and look for other browser. @Siria's work to organize the forum is absolutely valuable avoiding to fall into chaos. He always open new important threads to keep the important info always available. But a single user needs to find a fully functional browser, then he will decide how to improve it or not. Obviously, this could change whit upcoming official release, I guess. I don't critize, these are just thoughts and ideas to improve KM. smiling smiley

Had following in mind: (smooth degradation for instructions)

1. Video decoder (FFMPEG) libraries (with requirement of SSE2 instructions)
https://o.rthost.win/palemoon/lav.7z
2. (alternative1: without SSE2, but with requirement of SSE instructions)
https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/releases/download/0.69/LAVFilters-0.69-x86.zip
3. (alternative2: lite dlls without SSE and SSE2 requirement, with requirement of MMX)
https://o.rthost.win/palemoon/lav-dll-lite-mmx.7z
4. (alternative3: lite dlls without any optimization, even MMX, for any CPU)
https://o.rthost.win/palemoon/lav-dll-lite-noasm.7z

It is also important to note, even SSE2 does not CPU savings more than ~6-7% (see tests).
But creates problems on older hardware. For new equipment, these 6-7% of load is miniscule.
But we can get a full compatibility on any hardware. And this is important.

That stuff is all chinese to me, like for JG's friends sure too, it even starts already with:
MMX? SSE? SSE2? Do I need this, and how in the world do I figure out if I have it already?? And what's this for actually? mp4? html5-videos?
Now J.G. and I are dedicated enough to spend time on this, but most ordinary users will not waste their time. And knowing this will not be the only prob to come.

Let's see if perhaps turning the order around makes this easier to grasp for us clueless non-expert users?

1. mp4-codec for ALL systems, old and new: lav-dll-lite-noasm.7z
2. slightly faster for MMX-CPU: lav-dll-lite-mmx.7z
3. slightly faster for SSE-CPU: LAVFilters-0.69-x86.zip
4. slightly faster for SSE2-CPU: lav.7z

But overall the speed gain is minimal, no more as some 7% between 1+4

(No idea if I got this right above, it's like rocket science sorry ;-))

I know what you mean, but I'm "building"* a portable version with fully ES locale only and H264 support able to work on every computer, because some relatives of my closest friends have Windows 7 with older computers than mine; also a few friends of mine has W7 working like a charm. Probably their CPUs accept SSE2, SSE and MMX but I need to be sure. Days ago I installed the KM76RC2pro on my aunt's machine, running Windows 7 (that curiously worked really fine)... while waiting for a Pro version of KM-Goanna. The most of the time I use Chrome but I like KMeleon for the plugin compatibility. And KM-Goanna is making really a difference. smiling smiley

@hermes

My point was that on Win7 and upwards H.264 should play without the LAV-Filter as well, or am I missing something?

Edit:
Well, made a short test.
Opened a 1.5GB H.264 video in KM-Goanna. It played fine without the LAV-Filters. Then I did wind forward and KM crashed. I could easily reproduce the crash. It wasn't because of RAM shortage. RAM consumption was about 225MB while I still had 6GB unused RAM.
I couldn't make KM-Gecko crash.
Then I tested KM-Goanna with the LAV-Filter and couldn't crash it anymore. RAM consumption was far less, about 130MB.
To make a long story short. The LAV-Filter might be useful even on systems with H.264 support.

Viewing HTML5 video (in a frame), for systems from Win7 and above, can lead leak memory and hang your system (without LAV filters).

Details:
http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?19,143253,143364#msg-143364 (and below)

For thrill-seekers, delete LAV filters (or conduct an experiment on a clean system, e.g. on virtual machine) and open link on Windows7+:

Start video playback.

For testing I use a clean virtual machine.
But this effect I observed and in a real environment.

rodocop first noticed this effect, and I could not repeat it (at first).
But moved to testing on a clean distribution of OS. And receive it.

It's not an illusion, and not a feature of a certain hardware system.
It is a feature of Windows7 (it is possible that only x86).
By the way, not tested on x64. It is the result works in x86 Ultimate SP1.

Need to check later on x64. This is idea! smiling smiley
Perhaps x64 systems are not affected by this effect.

OK. Conducted a clean test. Was taken the distribution kit Win7 Ultimate SP1 x64 from MSDN.
The system was installed without any modifications. The system was installed in virtual machine and on real PC. Real PC have Corei5 3.2 GHz CPU and 8 GB DDR3 RAM.

The virtual machine worked with 3.5 GB of RAM. Also for the virtual machine was allocated only one core out of four. However, no difference in the result, because we consider as a common option. So as not to affect the result is not a single driver has not been installed (including video card work on a built-in VGA driver), except the network adapter (or how do we get out to the Internet?).

Used this URL: http://www.atlantiswordprocessor.com/en/help/atlantips_translation_side_by_side.htm .

Test without LAV filters: (~1.3 Mcool smiley

Test with LAV filters: (~444 Kcool smiley
(direct link) https://getfile.dokpub.com/yandex/get/https://yadi.sk/d/d_Vneykg3RA2he

The result of the experiment is recorded on video. There is no difference in x86 or x64. It is a feature of just have. Later conducted tests on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 (but only x64, but I don't think that there is a lack of x86). The result is similar. Memory leaked. There is no option.

Because I have a question. How do You manage to avoid a memory leak? It is almost impossible. Or You have something installed packages, programs, video players or other things that adds the desired component. Or You just wildly lucky smiling smiley.

If you are using a video player about KMplayer type, it adds a lot of codecs in a system, including LAV. You can try on a clean virtual machine (do not need reinstall OS)? Sometimes it is not easy to find a fouled application. But what You are describing (I believe that in your case it is true and you not have memory leaks) it's just not possible, sorry. Test on a clean configuration can not be wrong. It does not happen.

The fact that LAV, FFMPEG, LibAV filters can contain OCX / AX to register in system (as regsvr32: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regsvr32 ). At least LAV filters on github (a zip archive) containing such a component. Then it can use even with Windows Media Player.
