If something bad happens, I can always move to gitlab/bitbucket/gitea/etc. without any lost.
Great, but you are a single person. Lots of things can happen and poof - all is lost. Dorian had hardware failures, two disk crashes, and only the older sources on SF survived if I got that right. Of the latest version he only had binaries left. All sorts of accidents can happen, hardware, sickness, criminal attacks, legal threats, even harmless stuff like lack of time or money, due to family or job requirements. Even simply losing interest and deciding it's not worth the trouble.
If the latest sources are kept uptodate on one of the big services that greatly increases data safety.
Guess we should split this into a separate thread? Microsoft buys Github...

Sorry for the alarm. Only a (maybe bad) joke. But I admit some concern. (OK, I don't like it at all.) To examine this thoroughly, another thread, I agree... but I'd bet that many developers don't want anything to do with Microsoft and are beginning to get a move on.

Now MS has control over 80 million free projects which they can control much better now. Incredible.

My personal opinion:
After Google has gotten rid of free Linux-Android on mobile phones, by simply "eating it up" and forcing hardware manufacturers all into their Android-Google-Monopoly too (at least for ALL phones sold in Europe), and locked bootloaders preventing a firmware switch even for experts. Microsoft now obviously starts to do the same with Linux on Desktops. Surely will be successful too, seeing that hardware manufacturers are also long since forced into Microsofts monopoly for systems. They MUST do whatever MS wants from them, just as Android phone manufacturers MUST do whatever Google wants from them, include all their trojans and spying malware, or the manufacturers cannot sell anything in the western world.
And the 80 million other projects they got into their hands and under control are the other half of the cake.
Wonder now when either Google or MS will kill the waybackmachine too
