Update Search Engines for KM 1.6
Date: August 24, 2010 02:29PM
Now we have a Preferences chrome that work fine for KM 1.6, I think is the time to update the old list of Search engines included.
File: \K-Meleon1.6a4_cp3\defaults\profile\search.xml
I worked in his update some time ago but after a hard month working I lost the final file after a crash of my system while I'm working on it, and I hadn't any backup.
Please help us to update this search engines, testing and reporting with this template:
Search engine name:
URL for K-Meleon search:
Problem: [Offline] || [Wrong URL/Not work] || [Proposal to Delete] || [Proposal to Add]
Explanation: (Some info about it or why you proposal it)
Thanks for your colaboration.
Greetings.

The following should be added for name recognition alone:
Facebook
http://www.facebook.com/srch.php?nm=
MySpace
http://searchservice.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=sitesearch.results&type=AllMySpace&qry=

Twitter
http://twitter.com/search?q=
Youtube
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=

AOL Image Search
http://search.aol.com/aol/image?invocationType=topsearchbox.imagehome&query=
AOL Music (formerly AOL Audio)
http://music.aol.com/search/?query=

I think A9 does some things differently than the normal amazon search engine. Not sure.

Searching using A9 brings up the amazon search results page. Maybe they used to be different, but not anymore as far as results.

jsnj,
You're right, they merged them. A9 used to add extras, but no more.

Yahoo US is no more, as they now use Bing.
Not sure, but think Yahoo UK is still good for English speakers.

...
Yahoo is still worth saving I think as they offer 100 results per page. Bing's limit is 50.

The old Yahoo U.S. now says Bing at the bottom when you scroll down, the U.K. version does not. Did EU complain about MS & Yahoo getting together?

Sorry but I'm not agree with included social network searchers as:
Facebook,
MySpace or
Twitter.
These aren't really search engines.
Also remember that this social websites haven't a good support for standard Gecko User Agent Strings and have problems with K-Meleon UA.

I'm not sure what qualifies as "really" a search engine. You might as well get rid of the other site specific engines then I guess:
Webshots
Webshots Community
Yahoo Pulse

I think we should not include sites which do not accept and use our default UA. We don't want to lead users into situations where the site does not work for KM.

Google Search in K-Meleon Site & Forum:
[K-Meleon Support Search]
[http:/ /www.google.com/search?q=site:kmeleon.sourceforge.net&q=]
I would even sug*gest adding that to the default SE's. With a prominent placement and some eyecatching name (see above ...] this might help avoiding some traffic.

[Proposal to Add]
Yeah
DuckDuckGo is really nice!
http://duckduckgo.com
Has many configurations using parameters, these are my options:
https://duckduckgo.com/?kp=-1&kl=ar-es&ks=n&ke=-1&kr=-1&v=&kc=-1&q=k-meleon
Link to DuckDuckGo URL parameters
[Proposal to Add]
Imagery Search interface, using google Image search engine but BETTER:
http://elzr.com/imagery?imgsz=&imgc=&filetype=&query=k-meleon
It also accepts parameters.

I don't know if someone noticed this, or if it was added to the 1.6, but duckduckgo offers no javascript versions of the search engine now:
https://duckduckgo.com/lite/?q=kmeleon
https://duckduckgo.com/html/?q=kmeleon
Both are great, the first link will show the Lite version, the second one looks like the js version but in html.
The links I have posted are
https. Change that if you want.

This has nothing to do with KM 1.6, but for what it's worth...
Google has changed in recent times and the only way to get certain options to stick is through the use of cookies, and since I don't set and keep cookies Google has been getting really annoying (and yet it's the best for technical searches). I've since discovered that by using the HTTPS version I can get what I want without cookies, specifically: a number of search results greater than 10! Also, including "&nfpr=1" eliminates the incredibly stupid default auto correction that delivers the wrong results most of the time (wrongly assuming what was typed was mispelled).
The search string:
https://encrypted.google.com/search?hl=en&nfpr=1&num=50&q=
Breakdown:
https://encrypted.google.com/search?
uses the secure/encrypted search
hl=en
sets the language
&nfpr=1
"I know what I'm typing so don't change it!"
&num=50
delivers 50 results, 100 is another option
&q=
the query is:
other options abound I'm sure
example:
https://encrypted.google.com/search?hl=en&nfpr=1&num=50&q=K-Meleon

Great tips, thanx nfpr!!
It was getting on my nerves for SOO long, that google only gave 10 results if I wouldn't allow their ad cookies
By the way there's no encryption needed, works just as well with the 'normal' connection:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&nfpr=1&num=30&q=
That's without any search word at the end, the way it must be configured for auto-search, unlike bookmarks-nick or hotlist-nick, where one must append a %1. E.g. one can set a bookmark with nick "ge" to search english, and another bookmark with "hl=de" in it and nick "gd" to search german. That means, typing "gd blabla" in the URL bar then hitting Return gives german results, and typing "ge blabla" gives english blabla results ;-)
If anyone wants to change auto-search, go to F2 > Browsing > Finding Websites / Search engines
And then in the same prefs sheet in the first tab again
("URL bar"), at the bottom, choose that engine for auto-search (if the word in the URL bar can't be found as domain).
Hmm... never realized it's a bit complicated with those default engines and those in the menu, e.g. my globe-right-click-menu looks much different from anything in the configuration sheet *scratchinghead* And had not realized yet that the "default search engine" (if hitting globe or Ctrl+G) is something different than the engine for auto-search (if hitting just Return)!!
At any rate, if anyone has trouble with modifying the auto-search (=Return-key), you can alternatively go to about:config and filter for "searchengine", then double-click to modify

Thanks Siria and Guenter but I only get ten results no matter where I use those search strings in KM, thus my
apparent absolute need for the encrypted version. In fact, my home page is a local, custom designed html full of forms and links and the same options are ignored from there as well unless I use the https link to submit.
But wait! Knowing your credibility (Doon here! *wink wink* ; and no G, I didn't move to the uk *wink wink*) I began to think about what might be different about my browser, and then I thought "user agent", and sure enough my entirely fake (for me) user agent is what was keeping me at ten results!
This little lie:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.2) Gecko/20100115 Firefox/3.6
So, you were right but so was I in my own weird way and I guess it wasn't a
total waste of space since we both learned something. But so much for my bright ideas! I shouldn't even be posting this clutter, I randomized my password some time ago to cut myself off from this forum (no offense) but I couldn't help peeking in and posting
once or twice. ;-)
Cheers.

Has anybody written a search engine for the U.S. government weather-forecast site?
If not, I'd appreciate it if somebody would.
(This is the main page:
http://www.weather.gov/)
Or, alternately, if there's a set of instructions on how to create a search engine, I can try to do it myself.
Thanks.
