K-Meleon 0.9 Beta for TESTING
Posted by: Andrew
Date: October 13, 2004 02:33PM

A beta version of K-Meleon 0.9 is now available for testing. This is NOT a final release and is only intended for testing purposes. In order for us to provide the best possible version of K-Meleon, we need YOU to test this beta version as thoroughly as possible. Priorities for testing include:

* Normal browsing: Report anything that used to work in K-Meleon 0.8.2, but doesn't work in the new K-Meleon 0.9b.

* Macros: K-Meleon now comes with a huge collection of ready-made macros. Help us test them all thoroughly.

* Privacy plugin: A new plugin. Give it a strong work-out.

* Toolbars and menus: Most everything with toolbars and menus are changed but basicly they are still the same. Help us make sure that they both work okay no
matter what plugins you enable/disable.

* New skins: We are proposing using the Phoenity skin as the new default skin. Two versions are available for evaluation.

* Chrome-related items including cookie manager, password manager and Javascript console. Let us know if they display properly when used or if anything is
missing or not functioning properly.

* Downloading and downloading options. It is a known issue that automatic downloads always close after download.

* Anything that could possibly depend on the Windows version you use.

* SetDefault: A small tool (selected parts from the old installer) to set K-Meleon as your default browser.

It is critical that YOU report any bugs, questions or comments back to the developers list so that they can be evaluated and addressed. DO NOT download this build if you do not plan on providing any feedback. DO NOT provide feedback like "great job!" or "this sucks!".

Please report all bugs, questions and comments to the developers mailing list at kmeleon-dev@lists.sourceforge.net. Visit http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/kmeleon-dev first to subscribe and to read archived messages before posting.

Provide detailed reports on the bugs that you encountered or the questions that you have. Make sure to include the version of the operating system also. See this page for details on what kind of information that we want:

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?id=BugReportingGuidelines

Please install the beta in an empty directory. Do NOT install it over an existing build.

Download link:

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/files/beta/kmeleon09b.exe

Your assistance is critical to ensuring that we release a quality browser. We appreciate your help!

I've noticed certain php pages don't work with the new version. If I want to load http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/docs.php it works, but if I want to load, say, http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?id=TipsAndTricks, it doesn't. Basically, if a page ends with .php?... It doesn't work.

WFM - Win2k/SP4.

Can anyone else duplicate this problem?

If you go to http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?id=TipsAndTricks, you get a page announcing unauthorized, please log in.
However, if you remove the comma at the end of this http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?id=TipsAndTricks you get a web page.

The comma was posted as part of the link by mistake.

Picpac, what OS are you using? Like Andrew, I'm also on Win2k and it WFM.

For some reason this image http://www.acu.ac.uk/imgs/advertising/rad_academics.gif doesn't seem to appear, either if you view it alone or embedded in IMG tags in a web page. I don't remember any problems with seeing it from earlier versions of KM.

Running on XPSP2.

Iain,

That image displays fine for me - Win2K/SP4.

Can someone else with XP/SP2 test that?

I also seem to have a problem related to caching (images):

To test as follows:

- enable 'privacy toobar'
- go to this site:http://www.naturephotographers.net/enter.html
- clear cache via privacy toolbar 'clear cache' button
- copy this page URL into clipboard
- go to another site of your choice
- return to the original site by 'cut-n-paste' URL into URL bar
- image is broken (for me)
- 'reload' and /or 'force reload' does not work

To get to load page correctly:

- edit->preferences->cache->clear cache
- 'reload' now displays image/page correctly

-Win98SE; KM09b
-cookies; popups etc. allowed
- cached data in preferences set to 'automatic'

Thank you.

Hmmm well I did another install of the 0.9 beta and now it's appearing fine. No idea what the original problem was, can't reproduce it. Maybe me / KM / my ISP / whatever were just having an off-day.

You won't believe this... People are always asking if the layer bar can be moved to the bottom of the screen...

I'm using the new version. The layers bar is in an even worse place, now, believe it, or not!!!

It's at the top, ABOVE the address bar, to the right of the menues.

Can you believe that???

Kat,

1) Don't post the same message to every forum. It's annoying.

2) "People are always asking if the layer bar can be moved to the bottom of the screen..." Really? I've probably heard that request a couple of time at most and I've been using K-Meleon since 0.4.

3) As I posted on the other Forum, you can move the Layers bar down to below the URL bar, if that's what you prefer.

Kat it is usually sufficiant to post in General Forum - most people here only post
the same twice when they do not get an anwser after a post in a Forum section
that not many people read e. g. improvement request.

or when it is a enouncement like newKM-test.exe
since most people start their visit in General Forum You have answers at:
http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?f=1&i=18340&t=18340

Andrew several people have started asking - since other browsers seem to have it.
before that? & i do not think it is an essential feature?

I know because i normally read all forum new entries.
& i am not sure whether Your time permitts this?

guenter,

If it's desired, an RFE can be filed in the BTS. I'm not sure if it's doable or not but that's a start. If it's already there, point me to it.

thanks!

I think I see what is causing the problem soulpilot reported.
If I use the clear cache button on the privacy bar, K-Meleon still sends the If-Modified-Since: Header.
If I use the clear cache button in Preferences, K-Meleon does not send the header.

Here is a bug I just noticed.
Copy this,
http://www.naturephotographers.net/enter.html
, to the windows clipboard.
Paste and Go to http://www.naturephotographers.net/enter.html
Type and go to http://www.google.com .
Now can you Paste and Go to http://www.naturephotographers.net/enter.html
I canÂ’t because my clipboard is empty.
Win98se. With or without privacy plugin enabled. Does not happen with 8.2.

no Andrew i was not criticising nonexistance merely saying/stating
- requests - or better questions how to... have increased.-

& that You possibly can not know. & i feel You are NOT obliged to know
- none here of us is. (not really)

k-m is a nice hobby - we CAN - but we do not have to do/know/perform
...anything here!!!

(this was much clearer with w-b project
- we made a browser together and were willing to share!!)

but deep inside that is the core of any k-m.
a group can create better and more than a single person (so we try to gang up):
ulf, jasnj, jan ..You are making Your browser and You are willing to share.

a RFE is filed by the one person that likes the feature - wants the bug solved.

- i read every post in this forum since XII 03. the asking seems to be increasing
- but i do not want or need that feature/item - so i do not file a RFE.

i do not want or need it: or more to the point i would say ->>
- better invest dev time into better language support - better add blocking....

& i was not criticising but I was saying it was asked by several people that had
used that recently with other browsers

I think I am may be not the right person to post this information, but I have asked on the developerslist why it was so quiet and the beta was removed and I received an answer from Andrew what is also available on the dev.list now.

This is his message as also posted on the developerslist, what is giving some information about what the developers are doing behind the screens:

================

I"m just checking in as I haven"t been on e-mail since Friday. However, I believe that Ulf took down the last beta he posted to resolve some conflicts between the EXE and the Layers plugin. I believe that you posted a note indicating that you were having a problem with that. I believe that as soon as that is resolved, Ulf will have a new beta for testing.

Ulf is working on resolving all of the issues that people have reported. As he"s worked in some fixes, he"s posted updated files and has asked jsnj and myself to test them before making them available for everyone to test. We"re trying to avoid a problem like we had on Friday where the beta that got posted caused problems for people using it. As problems are reported and resolved, the information is being posted here and to the Beta page:

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/?id=Beta09

Short of posting every message from Ulf to the developers list, which I don"t think would be productive, I think we are doing our best to keep everyone in the loop, the current missing beta notwithstanding. If you have suggestions on how we can better keep open the lines of communication, please let us know.

=================

So I asked Andrew if it was possible to make the latest beta-information as for example 'we have removed the beta because of some problems etc.. etc...' on the beta-page so we know what is going on.

Hi Jsnj,

Thanks for changing the view macro, using the smalled chrome and repairing the close-layer bug to the dev's. That were the most important things for me ;-))

I added the macro's from Hao again, because I like them, (and my theme.... ofcourse :-)) but that was all.

Hope this build is stable, but it seems to be very good.

Any idea why??:

When using the layer-close button with the right-mouse-button in the default and phoenix-themes I get a pop-down menu with 6 options.
The last three options are focus-options.
When using my own skin, they are gone but I can't find the difference in all pref-files as toolbars.cfg etc..
