Am finally in the process of moving to beta-2 too, and keep occasionally finding nice little improvements for 1.6, which are cool smiling smiley

And really strongly support the new native spellchecker, since the whole world seems to need it so badly! :cool: Just can't find any menu or such for it, and personally would prefer to keep spellchecking with my own eyes (stupid lifelong habit grinning smiley), and switch off those little red underlines... just, uhm, where do I find that? *riddling*

Hmm, could it be that the start-offline bug is back in beta2? I don't mean the win9x-bug with cache and sessions (can't open new tabs for uncached pages, tries to load in same tab), but that general one:
When the browser is closed in offline mode, then reopened, the offline mode is still checked. Yet the browser works like "online". When opening e.g. the previous session, it loads the pages fresh from the web, offline or not. Not sure what it does with cached pages, but at least for uncached ones it should show "page load errors" instead, like it does after toggling "offline" on and off again manually.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but under Linux, with Firefox, I have some trouble with offline. Try adding this pref if it's better (it solves my problem under Linux):

toolkit.networkmanager.disable => true

If Firefox doesn't find network, it opens offline

Perhaps the problem may occurs under windows ??? Who knows ...

Thanks Alain, I'll check it out, sounds interesting...

And grmpf - just noticed the hotlist.dll deletes my nicks again. When I first checked they were still there, yet now they are gone. Will copy over the 154 version again. Don't think there was anything changed functionwise, or was it...?

kplugins included in Beta2 are the same that were included in alpha4, if this have problems in Win9x you can continued using kplugins from KM 1.5.4, if this work fine to you, no changes were added in kplugins.

Tried that network pref, but pity, no chance.
Browser keeps starting in online mode always, whether "offline" seems checked or not.

Had a look how my hotlist was automatically changed by KM16 alpha+beta versions, without changing anything myself. Not yet after first start, but a bit later it seems.
Fix: The hotlist.dll from KM154 still works fine, have it copied over into KM16b2 smiling smiley

Edit: Oops, had thought that offline thing had been fixed already, but remembered wrong ;-)

Siria,

Guenter has played with spellchecker as much as humanly possible, imo. The partial fix he came up with at least allows you to see misspelled words with the red underline, but will NOT call up a spellchecker. My kludge for that problem has been to go to the web, download WordWeb 3.02 (last freeware I could find) and use that. WordWeb is invoked by using a hotkey (the default is Alt W, which I continue to use) on a highlighted word which will then call it up with a definition, synonyms, antonyms and if a misspell, it will call up your default browser. Not the same as KM's spellchecker, but a good enough kludge to keep me happy for now. <g>

You can setting spellchecker with this prefs from about:config

K-Meleon1.6_Beta2\defaults\pref\kmeleon.js

// Spell checker preferences
pref("layout.spellcheckDefault", 2);
pref("layout.textarea.spellcheckDefault", true);
pref("extensions.spellcheck.inline.max-misspellings", 200);

Sorry siria but you must accept that your system is a little peculiar configuration with win98+KernerEx, if anyone confirm this problems in other systems I can't accept that this problem really exist in KM, it isn't nothing personal against you.

Spellchecker is a Gecko feature but need a kplugin like spelltest.dll to work fully, with list of suggestion words in context menu. But spelltest.dll need to be updated to work with Gecko 1.9.x spellchecker.

Do you mean GRE(Gecko Runtime Engine) or XULRunner?

Replacing XUL binaries would not help if K-Meleon
sources don't use certain functions.
Who compiled 1.6b2 XULRunner 1.9.1.17pre binaries?
I don't know where to get that version.

Someone with full sources should run it in
debug mode and set a breakpoint
to "PRBool is_targetable = is_primary ||"
in nsFrameLoader.cpp to see if/when it is called.

GRE = Gecko Runtime Engine, naturally. Yes, even I know that Mozill.org propagates Xulrunner for applications using their GREs' now. But K-Meleon project is much older than that. grinning smiley

No idea what should be done since I am no developer/programmer.

Currently I do not know where to get any specific GRE version but from the Mozilla servers. Especially I do not know where to get any builds with shared libraries instead of a big lib xul or a static exe. sad smiley

The 1.6.bet2 GRE binaries/dll are based on Suite not Xulruner.
I assume Dorian has built the GRE1.9.1.17pre but I do not know.

To me it seems open which GRE will be the base in the future?

desga2 was so kind to elaborate so I could understand Your post about xul.dll a little:

Quote
desga2's explanation
If the problem is really the xul.dll file the problem should not happen in 1.7a2 because this use xul.dll from Firefox 3.6.13 and this include the strings (hexadecimal viewer search):
c o n t e n t -
content-primary
content-targetable

(also includes in Firefox 3.5.13 xul.dll file)

xul.dll file from Seamonkey 2.0.11 (1.6 Beta2) not include this strings.

p.s. K-Meleon is based on mfcembed which was elementary browser-only subset of a GRE based on suite. It was fully support till GRE 1.7. Until GRE 1.9.1.x it was more or less supported and the sources shipped the source to build mfcembed.exe (the ancestor of all current K-Meleon.exe - since version 0.3).

Mozilla 1.92.x sources do not ship MFCembed but only winembed.exe and sources for it now (the ancestor of K-Meleon 0.1 - 0.2).

Xukrunner is a all inclusive package - it can e.g. also support a mail client.
That is a waste of resources for a small browser app like K-Meleon.
Part of his frugal use of resources comes from using only browser components.
But probably Xulrunner.dlls and toolkit.jar is the way to go with current and future ample PC resources and the scarce dev man-hours that this project can muster.

I did/do not build any K-Meleon.exe or dll. From what I read in older Forum posts You can build the debug version from what is in CVS about K-Meleon 1.6.
To build You'd need VC8 - according to Dorian.

(Ich persönlich denke, dass VC Express 2005 und Microsoft Platform SDK for Windows Server 2003 R2 reichen könnten. / Beides gibt es noch umsonst im Netz, wenn man gut googelt.)

Sometimes I have build a GRE for updating.
Which meant that I was able to build custom GREs too.

Currently I have problems to build any GREs. sad smiley

xul.dll file from Seamonkey 2.0.11 (1.6 Beta2) not include this strings.
First I thought the content code was missing -> wrong.

Difference Firefox/Seamonkey location of code code for content-primary:
Firefox packed /components/*.dll into /XUL.DLL
Seamonkey has it in /components/gklayout.dll

K-Meleon 1.54 + 1.60b2 are based on Seamonkey

Taken from my other post:
"In Gecko 1.8.1 (Firefox 2) and earlier, the type may be 'content',
'content-primary' or some other 'content-' prefix. In Gecko 1.9 only
type='content-primary' and type='content-targetable' browsers may be
targeted."

K-Meleon 1.54 has chrome 1.8.1 (no problem)
K-Meleon 1.6b2 has chrome 1.9.1 (problem)

The intention of patching firefox was to get a proof
that this code is required
to get window.content
in console->viewsource.

HEX-PATCH Firefox XUL.DLL (content-primary|content-offmary)
firefox->
.console->
..viewsource (window.content==null)->
...no line numbers==no highlight of error

firefox->
..view source->
...does not open

Seamonkey Sources with chrome 1.9.1.17pre (KM 1.6b2) are here:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/seamonkey/nightly/2.0.12-candidates/build1/source/seamonkey-2.0.12.source.tar.bz2

@desga2
my guess is that
"static PRBool AddTreeItemToTreeOwner"
is not executed by K-Meleon sources or fails.

todo:
- did not patch/test seamonkey
- did not compile anything
