I am downloading K-Meleon1.6a2.7z to give it a run for it's money. Does anyone know if it is safe for use on encrypted web sites and if I should be awre of any problems other than those mentioned at the K-Meleon 1.6 Development page?

Only the ones mentioned. Maybe ones hidden in the GRE?
There was a recent post about a Secunia advisory 4 Firefox.
It may affect K-Meleon 1.6(and 1.5?) also.

Add exceptions dialoge less clear than the old one

it's just as safe as the latest firefox. you can't add exceptions yet for sites using invalid certificates..so it's super safe

yes you're right..i'm sorry, i completely forgot to test bad certs with 1.6a2 and was concerned with the visual bugs following 1184 fix. i tested now and they work fine, not as smooth as in 1.8 but good enough..the first override window is a bit annoying as it opens in same window size which can be big or maximised.. but i think that's a chrome thing with window size not defined like in about kmeleon and kko will fix it naturally
