Anybody know how to get the Google search (Ctrl+G) to correctly handle Umlauts again as in 0.8.2?

Rolf,
Can you post a test case - it appears to be working for me.

This can be fixed in macros (at least there's a workaround that fixes it for German umlauts, but general support would be better, of course).
BTW: It is probably broken in 0.8.2 as well. Are you using Wechselbalg or s.th. similar?

The problem I'd guess in in the URL string? KM's coded Google search recognizes the character but it would appear to use the same URL string that's in macros which is what is used in the default configuration, so I'm not sure how the coded search remedies it. Using Yahoo from the Web Search menu works. But not Google. Neither of the following Google search strings worked either. Ra, what's the fix you referred to?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=
http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&q=

BTW: The URL string stays the same, it's just the umlaut that gets replaced (can be done quite easily in PHP for example), if you use Google directly.

For anyone suggesting
http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?id=german+umlauts as a fix. This is what I did! It worked previously in 0.8.2 (the plain one) but gives me an error upon starting KM in 0.9.b3 and apparently refuses to do anything. That is what this whole thread is about.
I figure the logic of replacing umlauts with their coded equivalents should work in 0.9.b3 as well. The question remains as to how.

I'll fix it by final release. In the meantime for those who prefer Google over Yahoo and need umlauts recognition, in toolbars(View-Toolbars-Customize), in the Search Bar, change:
Search {
%ifplugin macros
macros(Search)|Web Search
Type a word or phrase in the URL bar, then click Search (Ctrl+G). Right-click to choose different search engine.
%else
ID_NAV_SEARCH
Search the Web
%endif
searchhot.bmp[0]
searchcold.bmp[0]
}
to:
Search {
ID_NAV_SEARCH
Search the Web
searchhot.bmp[0]
searchcold.bmp[0]
}
If you wanna use Yahoo instead which recognizes umlauts without any additional browser code, just go to the Web Search options, unlock the search engine, choose Yahoo, then lock again.

@jnsj
hm, I was too quick in rejoicing. Actually the proposed solution does not change anything - at least for me.

Which solution did you use (Yahoo or coded Google) and what exactly were your results?

Oh, I forgot to tell you to change the accelerator file. Did you try it by using Ctrl+G? If so, that would have displayed the macro Google search. Go to 'Tools-Advanced Preferences-Accelerators' and change:
CTRL G = macros(Search)
to:
CTRL G = ID_NAV_SEARCH

I made the recommended changes but it still refuses to work. There is no change in behaviour from what I reported earlier.

I don't know what else to tell you other than it worked for me when I made the changes.
