new version : K-Meleon-NX-1814

I have uploaded to Rapidshare a new updated no-Xul version :
K-Meleon-NX-1814 .
This is a simplified version of K-Meleon 1.x ,
usable in Linux together with wine , or also in Windows,
updated to Mozilla 1.8.1.4 using Gecko/20070511,
from Seamonkey 1.1.2.
Look and feel are similar to the earlier 0.9 versions.
The NX No-chrome concept is used here. Thanks to Hao Jiang and Dorian.
Java is now enabled thanks to Guenter.
The browser is very fast, because Xul is not used.
Note : Flashblock, Aggreg8 and other extensions are not included in this
no-chrome version. No autocomplete as it causes problems in Linux.
Ad-blocking by userContent.css and hostperm.1 .
Many useful search engines have been added.
The profiles folder will be created inside the K-Meleon main folder.
If, when in Linux, you want this folder inside the wine configuration directory because of property rights problems, rename the file profile.ini
inside the K-Meleon main folder to for example profile.ini-renamed
before the first start.
Note :
This version works only if you have the files mfc71.dll,msvcp71.dll
and msvcr71.dll in your system or in your K-Meleon folder.
If you need them, they are still available under the name
dll-installer on the KM 8.2 website at :
http://www.lontronics.nl/index.php?m=0006
This will install the files on your system .
If necessary in Linux, copy the files manually to the K-Meleon main folder.
A javascript button has been included. After changing permissions
for javascript, reload the page.
History must be deleted manually.

Download as zip file at :

or as tarball for Linux at :

The download addresses for K-Meleon-NX-1814 can now
also be found on the page for unofficial K-Meleons at:

The profiles folder will be created inside the K-Meleon main folder.
So, can I run this simultaneously with KM 1.1.0.3, like a portable version?

It should not use your profile in the c://documents/...etc
folder, but create a separate one inside the K-Meleon main
folder. But you cannot run two instances of a K-Meleons
at the same time. That means, that a webpage will still open
in the first browser instance, even if you start a
different browser variation, until you close all the
windows of the first opened version.

Bad choice of words.

I wouldn't run two instances simultaneously. I would just want to have both versions on the HD at the same time and not have each one try to use the same profile. Even if they did I suppose I could create a separate profile for each one.

But if the profile is stored in the install folder I could put it on a portable drive, too.

You can use the version K-Meleon-NX-1814 on a portable
drive, a USB flash drive, as long as have the file
profile.ini in the K-Meleon main folder.
On a CD you would need the new special version
K-MeleonNX-forCD, because a CD is not writable,
and the profile would be created on the harddisk,
while the version K-MeleonNX-forCD, or my older versions
K-Meleon1.0.1-mod-forCD and K-Meleon-ME1.7.12-mod-fromCD,
which you still can find on the page for unofficial versions
http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/wiki/UKmeleon
create no profile at all, but have also no cache and no history,
as this would also have to be written on the CD.
For a USB-stick you can use the normal version
K-Meleon-NX-1814.

The included favorites.dll does not work well with W98SE (on which the three
recommended m*71.dll's are in place.)

After the IE Favorites plugin is enabled, edit->prefs->plugins, it does locate
my existing favorites directory when restarted and displays the contents but
does not sort the items nor display favicons.

With the IE Explorer configure button, the Favorites Toolbar option can be
selected and saved, and is in effect when restarted. However, on entering
a Favorites directory path or selecting sorting options, no values are saved
with OK and a Fatal Exception later results. (The error seems to depend upon
which other plugins are enabled but I have not determined a correlation.)

AFAICT, Favorites works as expected if the favorites.dll from K-Meleon 1.02
is substituted before enabling the plugin.

Does the NX-1814 favorites.dll have additional features?

I have made this variation mainly for my
personal use in Linux with wine.
That is why I also use a k-meleon.exe that
has been improved for Linux by Dorian.
It does not have autocomplete, because this
would create difficulties in Linux, and makes
it possible to use the address bar there.
I did not realize yet, that the here used favorites
kplugin possibly does not work correctly
because in Linux I do not use windows favorites.
If the favorites kplugin from KM 1.02 works
for you, you can exchange it without problems.
You can probably even exchange the used k-meleon.exe
to have autoconfigure in Windows, if
this is useful for you. The only restrictionwhen using the fast NX-structure is, that it is
not possible to use the Xul-based extensions
as Noscript or Adblock, because there is no
Xul present in this version. But this may also
make it less vulnerable for security risks,
because most of these depend on Xul structures.
Adblocking by css is satisfying for me personally,
and to make the lack of NoScript acceptable,
I have added the separate Javascript button.
I mostly surf with Javascript turned off, and can
enable it, using the Javascript button, each
time that I find it necessary.
The simple structure of the version makes it
usable for me in a much more stable mode in Linux.
But the speed and simplicity of it may make it
interesting for some to use it in Windows too.

Thanks for the information.

As a Windows user, this variation is of interest
(a) for use on older hardware to avoid the overhead of XUL (but I don't
have any performance comparisons)
(b) as a portable version with security fixes made since Douglas McFadzean's
Pocket K-Meleon 1.02 (his development work is now mostly on Linux and he
doesn't anticipate any new versions per a May 1 2007 announcement on his
website.)
