The official K-Meleon 0.9

If you are new to K-Meleon, this would be a good build to begin with.

K-Meleon Wechselbalg {1.8.2+}

This is not a current build. It remains as one of the best K-Meleon builds ever produced, and is still considered to be the fastest K-M for some purposes.

It is mainly of historic or collection interest.

Wechselbalg was a co-operative, unofficial creation by a number of friends, all experts. Many of them continue to be active on this forum.

K-Meleon versions by Hao Jiang

Hao Jiang is K-Meleon's most prolific designer of K-Meleon 0.9 versions for general use, specific uses, and experimental uses.

If you are new to K-Meleon, but you would like to begin with a K-Meleon that is the cutting-edge of this browser's development, you would be well advised to start with a K-Meleon by Hao. You will find lots of discussion on other threads to bring you right up to date.

You don't need to be an expert to use Hao's K-Meleons. When his builds are highly experimental, he warns you.

Hao's builds do not use an Installer, and you can easily have any number of them in addition to your basic 0.9 {1.7.5}. if you wish.

-- Always: ONLY ONE K-MELEON TO A FOLDER. Never two in the same folder.
-- DO NOT INSTALL OVER THE TOP of an existing build.

-- You can have fifty K-Meleons if you wish, but only one will work at a time. You have to close that one and open the next (takes just a few seconds). If you try to run two at once, you will simply re-trigger the first one.

Modifications by Fred

Fred modifies Hao's builds. Fred's include advanced search options as well as different toolbar setups and appearances.

If you are interested in Hao's work, you might enjoy looking at Fred's as well. Typically, Hao will release a build and Fred will release a modified version quite soon following.

Sebastian's K-Meleons

Sebastian produces mainly German K-Meleons. If you do not speak German, you can still understand these builds and use them. People at this forum will be glad to help you substitute English files, if you would like to do that.

Guenter's K-Meleons

Guenter is another long-time expert in the art, and he occasionally offers his own versions. Like Sebastian's builds, these ones come from Germany. Guenter tends to make his K-Meleons in English, however.

Because Guenter's are unscheduled releases, you can use "Search" to look for them, or just read the forum posts. If you would like to visit Guenter's website, that in itself is a rewarding experience. It is a beautiful, highly creative place:

Other Hao Jiang Versions

Hao does not always release his K-Meleons from his blog. Anyone interested in what he has been up to lately should look for the most recent thread that has been originally posted by Hao Jiang. Frequently he will include the link to his latest work from the thread.

Following are K-Meleon builds produced after May 6, or ones which--heaven forbid!--I forgot to include.

K-Ninja This modification of K-Meleon was brought out during the beta testing phase of K-Meleon v0.9, and is in fact a modification of the then current K-Meleon beta version (Gecko v1.7.4), albeit with some ResHacks and toolbar customizations to bring forward a "minimalistic" type of K-Meleon interface. Mark the guy who worked on it hasn't since brought out any newer versions since the release of K-Meleon v0.9 so the current status of the project is unclear at this time.

clickfish's Gekko-Eye builds clickfish has been around for a while and he's just brought out a new "German Language only" build for those who are interested. It's based on the current Gecko v1.7.8 (fresh).

New Original 0.9 {1.7.8}

The Original K-Meleon was built on the Gecko Runtime Engine {1.7.5}. After quite a few experimental versions had come out in {1.7.7} and {1.7.8}, people were asking if the Original might be updated with a new GRE.

Fred complied and on May 14, 2005, brought out a new "Original" K-Meleon 0.9 {1.7.8} which he announced in these forums at http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?f=1&i=26310&t=26310

updated my ww theme to GRE and Chrome 1.7.8 joined the many xpt files.

i have taken the other down because i had mixed up language file en-US.jar
English version and German version.

Those that have downloaded do not need to redo - They/You can just take any other en-US.jar. it is purely a translation file - only at the bottom at global the file about.xhtml is our k-m credits page and calls the logo.gif from chrome toolkit.jar
global - the different logo files have different sizes so the logo looks odd but
IMHO that does not matter 2 much.

WW_revisited 3 includes:

- a standard 0.9exe created by the official K-M devs
- an update of Gecko back-end libraries to mozilla 1.7.9 beta or GRE 20050621, from mozilla.org
- a Chrome update to Mozilla 1.7.8, based on Andrew`s official 1.7.5 Chrome
- Chrome update was done by a batch file
- combined xpt for faster startup.


Skins and Themes:

Boxed Classic skin for Wechselbalg updated to K-M 0.9 by Fast Sjonny
with alternative Skin background heavily inspired by Hao Jiang - who was inspired, in turn, by imrockit and HgS design for Maxthon.


Specific Components:

- Throbber donated to w-b+ project by Eyes-Only
- Mimetypes editor by Monkee-Sage ( I first saw this idea in a K-M issue by Sebastian )
- Aggreg8 RSS Newsreader by Philip Roch (as used in official K-Meleon 0.9)
- Built-in Notepad2 editor (idea from a German K-M issue by clickfish
created by (c) Florian Balmer 2004
- Built-in metapath 3.1.08, a universal Explorer-like file manager
(c) Florian Balmer 1996-2004
- Built-in shortcut.exe, a little tool that can be used to start predefined applications.
This idea was first in a French K-M issue by alain. Alain created and collected numerous tools
- SetDefault.exe, also by alain, in its improved version
- Slightly altered menus, based on ideas from Sebastian.
