unofficial 1.9 variation : K-Meleon-SM2a3
Posted by: Fred

I have uploaded an unofficial 1.9 variation :
K-Meleon-SM2a3 .
This is an 1.9 variation of K-Meleon 1.5.x ,
based on Gecko 1.9.1b3 from Seamonkey 2.0 alpha 3 , 20090303.

* This is an experimental version, using parts of the upcoming K-Meleon generation and based on Gecko 1.9 .
* Thanks to Guenter for the chrome.
* My intention is to present an 1.9 variation that works in Windows, but also in Linux with wine, where the conditions to work are more difficult for K-Meleon than in Windows.
* This version works only, if you have the files msvcp71.dll, msvcr71.dll and mfc71u.dll in your system or in your K-Meleon main folder. If you need these dll's, look for them in the Internet.
If necessary in Linux, put them into the K-Meleon main folder.
* The profile will be created inside the K-Meleon folder. If you want it inside the ".wine" folder, because of user rights problems, rename the file profile.ini to profile.ini-renamed before the first start.
* In Linux the URL bar is only usable with more recent wine versions.
If you are using an older wine version, use the URL button to open an URL prompt.
* A recent version of wine for Linux is preferable, to minimize possible crashes.
* Opera has been set as user agent, to avoid errors in complex webpages with insufficient browser recognition.
* A Javascript button has been added. Reload the page after enabling or disabling javascript.
* Many additional Search Engines in the menu bar, opening in a new window.
* A general startpage is already in the bookmarks.
* Keyboard shortcuts:
Page back : (right)ctrl + left arrow
Page forward : (right)ctrl + right arrow
Close Window : (right)ctrl + down arrow
Go to home : (right)ctrl + up arrow

Fred, I thought you might like to see SM2a3 running with transparency on "Wow's Unnamed Puppy Linux," a variant of the standard Puppy 4.1.2.

Thank you for the picture.
I'm glad that my variation can be useful
for you in Puppy Linux.
It looks as if K-Meleon may go on to be
functional in Linux distros, even with
Gecko 1.9.x in times to come.

Regards

I should have mentioned that SM2a3 in the picture was running in wine 1.1.17 on Wow's Unnamed Puppy, along with an smp kernel (2.6.28.5).

I just checked SunSpider and it's hard to believe but running in wine SM2a3 scored a 1267 and Firefox for Linux 3.1b3 scored a 1670!!! Lower is better.

I just tried Wow Puppy in ram and it's running
quite impressive.
I'm having a program collection and window managers
on a separate stick, to test various live CDs with
scripts.
The only thing that still annoys me is the difficulty to
add non-root users to Puppy.
Otherwise I would use Puppy more often.
I remember that there was a possibility using TinyLogin.
I am not surprised that KM-SM2a3 is faster than Firefox
in Linux. There is much less to get in move in KM,
just as it is in Windows too.

Works ok for me.
Don't try to download by right click, but a left click
will bring you to a second page with a button.
Left click on that, sometimes try twice, to start the
download.
Could also have been a temporary unavailability.

Fred
This is an interesting result I think. Running SM2 in wine 1.1.18 (actually cxover 8a) there were significant differences (~20%) in times on the sunspider javascript benchmark depending on what version of windows wine was set to.

Wine/Windows98 1427
Wine/Windows2000 1191
Wine/WindowsXP 1360

I have always heard Windows 2000 ws the fastest and I guess that applies to wine also ;-)

Yes, Windows 2000 wine emulation was the fastest here as well.
It may depend on the wine version, the computer power and
also on the distro that is used. I was just testing a Linpus live CD,
which is the preinstalled distro in a couple of netbooks,
but rather tedious to configure to other expectations
(no widescreen support, hard to change the windows manager,
difficult to install added programs, and so on).
It has a very simple Gui and may be usable for netbooks and
new users coming from Windows, but not for Linux users having
other conceptions in mind.
I was just wondering what is installed on Linux netbooks,
so I checked the live CD, as I did with many others.

Hello again Fred, I am having a problem with drop down menus in SM2a3 (in linux). When I try to use them the program freezes. I don't know if it has been this way all along or if this is new, because I don't think I have used Preferences much. These two examples both cause a freeze when I attempt to use the drop down menu. Thanks.

Edit -. Preferences -> Browsins -> Typed URL
Edit -> preferences -> Gui -> Phoenicity

Seems to work ok here.
I can change the "Typed URL" dropdown, and also
change Phoenity to another theme (if there is an
additional one in skins).
What poses a problem in certain distros, is
a report about "bad alloc" and unsufficient resources,
when the browser is started from a menu or even
a terminal. I can avoid this by changing into the
K-Meleon folder by "cd" in the terminal and
start it with
wine k-meleon.exe
only.

Thank you for your interest in my experimental version.
I mainly am working on it because it still uses the
70's runtimes, while the future K-Meleon 1.6 seems to
use the 80's runtimes, which makes it hard to be used
in Linux with the wine emulator.
I still want to go on using K-Meleon in Linux, because
I use Windows rather rarely nowadays, and I hope that I
can update K-Meleon-SM2a3 further for as long as possible.

Fred,

You're not the first one who has mentioned the 80's runtimes. Is there any way we can get our hands on that ocmpiler? Perhaps we can go for donations using Paypal and ask the K-Meleon Community to help out?

The compiler can be downloaded for free from
the Microsoft site.
But as long as KM-SM2a3 will work satisfactorily,
there is no need to try to compile anything.
I have not tried a similar task up to now, and
I'm not sure how far I would succeed.
