Barbara, I still think it must be your cookies. The settings are on the same privacy tab as the "login" setting. Take a look there, click on "currently stored cookies" and try to find it. Remember its name, then click on cookies "Exceptions" and add it there, mark it as "session only". You probably want to change the general settings for cookies too, on the right side.
Just hope google hasn't sneaked that in as a flash cookie, that would be a bit more difficult to handle.
I'd also recommand to switch on the privacy bar (View>Toolbars), it prevents lots of stuff from getting stored secretly when enabling cookies and javascript only if really needed.
Frankly, KM does occasionally need some digging for certain settings and a bit perseverance, but really not as often as it may look to you at the moment. And it's worth it, if one basically likes it - or if one is really frustrated with 30sec waits in other browsers ;-)
And of course not every browser is everyone's cup of tea. Sometimes I'm rather envious of FFx's easy drag-n-drop configuration and the half-automatic addon-system with a great search, lots of very helpful comments and ratings etc. But all-in-all, KM has other advantages that matter more to me, in some regards it is actually easier to customize. Just one example, I absolutely love my nice sunrise toolbar background, and all it took me to use it, years ago when I just started using KM, was to throw a look into the skins folder and discover the "back.bmp" there, then exchange it with any photo or graphics. And I like to be able to add almost any menu as a right-click on toolbar buttons, and other things. Recently I was bothered with a bunch of links that someone posted that started with "ttp:", but I was able to write my own little macro there that now adds that missing "h" automatically (or a third "w"), if a link is incomplete.
So no matter how envious I sometimes may be of other aspects in other browser, as soon as I open KM again, I just love it all over again and feel a certain relief to be 'home' again, where everything works as I want it, even if the one or other setting took some learning and digging, and even if once in a few weeks I need to use FF or Opera for a moment
