Letter to Hao

Hello Hao,

I have been looking for a ie6 sp1 alternative
since years, and found it in your personal
archive, it wasn't even listed in k-meleon .. .

http://www-personal.engin.umich.edu/~haojng/

Your build:

K-MeleonCCF ME 0.05
K-Meleon 0.9_1.8/1.9 Chrome
(16-Jan-2006 12:23 5.6M).

I have customized it a lot in the menus .. .
firefox and k-meleon are the only browsers
that support TABBLESS BROWSING as
an alternative to ie6. Opera too but Opera
is for XP, otherwise windows arrive in
cascade, etc .. . And aol explorer is not
memory friendly and is subjected to crashes
like ie, more than k-meleon .. .

That is why i use k-meleon, and what made me
chose your build instead of nightly builds of
firefox, is the fact that WE DO NOT HAVE
the stupid "MISSING OBJECT ICONS"
appearing during page formatting ... . That
is one of the mainr easons why i use your
browser. 2ndly, firefox seems to have more
problems with page formatting and microsoft
sites ..... . AND FIREFOX IS GETTING
HEAVY FOR THE MEMORY As new
builds are being created ... . I'm contacting
you because your build i mentionned up above
is the one i want to use forever, if nothing new
will appear for 98se. I saw that your future
builds have that stupid missing object icon
in every empty unformatted pictures for
exemple, during page formatting .. .

If you could change this behaviour in a
nightly build i would give you of firefox,
then i might want to use forefox even.
It's a lot more beautiful when you see
tittles instead of those stupid icons .. .

Otherwise, i'll keep using your version
up above of k-meleon .. .

My requests are those (for K-Meleon
CCFME0.05 (16-Jan-2006 12:23 5.6M):

1- I would like to select text on a page,
exemple (aul.com) and right click on it
then hit on Go 2 Url, WITHOUT
RECEIVING A URL BOX, have it
proceeded in the same page, no tabs.
Like in Opera, i tried to add a macro
listed in k-meleon's website, it didn't
work .. . I don't want it in the selected
text window .. . I use the selected text
window for selected text searches only,
the Go 2 url button is a lot more used,
that's why i don't want it in the selected
text submenu .. .

2- When i create a "bookmark" list of
websites, all future visited pages are
automatically added to the bookmarks
file and list, I DON'T WANT K-meleon
to add anymore links i visit there because
i have added my prefered urls .. .

3- I would like to have an icon where the go
button usually stands in k-meleon's bar, that
i could click on, and get a submenu list of
prefered websites .. .

4- I would love to have a reload option
for PICTURES or other objects that
didn't appear because of connection
issues .. . like in Opera.

5- And if possible ... . A WAY TO
MAKE THAT BUILD SAVE SESSIONS
AND RELOAD THEM IF A CRASH
OCCURS, (all opened urls with positions) sad smiley

That would be wonderful if you could.

to implement those 5 functions. When, i don't know .. .

I will apreciate it If anyone can help me and Hao,
by bringing answers to my 5 requests up above.

About the GO feature:

This macro gives you a Main Menu spot, as for the icon, I think it depends upon the theme that you use. I don't seem to have it in Early Blue, will have to look around for it elsewhere.

Sorry ndebord but,

You didn't read properly, cause i never wanted icons anywhere .... .

So i don't know what you're refering to with this macro ... .

Paul,

I was referring to your post where you said: 3- I would like to have an icon where the go button usually stands in k-meleon's bar, that i could click on, and get a submenu list of prefered websites .. .

When you said "k-meleon's bar" what did you mean? There are essentially two main choices for "stuff." The Main Menu and a Go Menu Item or a Go Button on the second bar where all the other icons reside. When you said bar, I thought the second line. As for the Macro, it doesn't do what you want I see, but want you do want sounds more like the Groups menu item.

Perhaps someone else has a macro that does what you want here.

Thx for your reply ndebord,

I'll try to be clearer this time .. .

So, yes .. . if an icon can be included in that particular requested feature, why not,
but the icon isn't my interest, if there's no icon, it wouldn't even matter .... .

You have a Go button on the right side of the browser's address bar,
it's the place where i want the feature i mentionned up above .. .

Just like Ie link's submenu on it's address bar .... .

Where i could add my own prefered websites.

The favorites menu is used for direct searches using the %s
switch, and that even has a problem anyways, if i have prefered
search engines, when im making new searches, km automatically
adds all the searches in the favourites section fulfilling it with
useless unrequested icons from my past searches ... .

For the button problem:
I don't think that your explaination
is specific enough to make clear what
you want. If you are using Favorites,
go to the menus.cfg file inside
profiles\default\... and, just before
"F&avorites" (which should already
be there), do some editing (but
first make a backup copy of the
original menus.cfg):

#==Try adding the bold lines in menus.cfg inside profiles\default\=====

FavLinks {
favorites()
}

Favs {
!FavLinks
-
favorites(Add, Add)
favorites(Edit, Explore)
}

#===================================================

Then go to the toolbars.cfg file
inside your current skin, and at
the upper part of the file
(before all the other toolbars
and buttons), edit some more
(first make a backup copy
of the original toolbars.cfg):

#==Try adding the bold lines in toolbars.cfg inside current skin======

Fav-button(16,16){
Fav{
rebarmenu(Favs)|F&avorites
Fav QuickMenu. Right-click for full menu.
}
}

#===================================================

Then restart the browser.
These edits should make a new
button called Fav that you can
move anywhere on the toolbar.
If these edits do something
close to what you want, GREAT!
If they don't maybe, they will
give you an idea how to explain
the problem differently.

Hi,

Exactly vpowell, you got that right,
& we're progressing .. .

But .. .

I'm facing 2 bugs actually:

1) when i click on the fav icon i added after the address bar,
the File menu opens itself smiling smiley) It's magical )) So i have to
keep my finger on the mouse untill the fav's menu appears
on that toolbar .. .

2) There, i get the Add/Explore submenu, when i click on it,
Nothing appears, nothing comes up ... .

I'm swimming in bugs smiling smiley

In that message up above: Author: Paul (---.w193-251.abo.wanadoo.fr)

I was refering to the bookmarks, not the favorites menu, sorry about that.

But the favorites menu is the right submenu i want on the address bar
like vpowell guessed.

I didn't first tried the favourite section you gave me for the menu file,
since i already had this:

F&avorites {
favorites(Add, Add)
favorites(Edit, Explore)
macros(FileFav, Add/Explore)
-
favorites()
}

(IN THIS CASE, I'M EXPERIENCING THE 2 BUGS I MENTIONNED
UP ABOVE ......)

Then i tried to add yours .. . >

FavLinks {
favorites()
}

Favs {
!FavLinks
-
favorites(Add, Add)
favorites(Edit, Explore)
}

(IN THIS CASE, THE FILE MENU DOESN'T POPUP, AND I CAN CLICK
ON THE FAVS BUTTON ONCE JUST TO OPEN IT, BUT THERE'S NO
ADD/EXPLORE SUBMENU ......)

FavLinks {
favorites()
}

Favs {
!FavLinks
-
favorites(Add, Add)
favorites(Edit, Explore)
macros(FileFav, Add/Explore)
}

I plaied with your version and Hao's one, and added the macro line .. .
If Add doesn't do anything, that must be because the macro for this
feature isn't written properly or must be absent .. . I'll try to check that
now .. . I don't know these languages but i have to use exemples on other
"working" versions .. .

Paul,

I don't know if you are still reading this, but did you realise that the title of this thread is "Letter to Hao"? Naturally, people whose names aren't "Hao" don't read it. Well, except for the helpful ones like ndebord and vpowell.

And I'm glad you found something that suits your needs. You don't have to insult the developers (who are not reading this anyway) by calling their work a joke.

Oh well, life goes on. Adios, too.

You know, when I first answered your querry, I had the sinking feeling that you were nothing but a lowly troll. Thanks to your latest post, I now know that you are that and a first class a*hole.

I'm always glad to hear from this kind of people, they make me feel superior to the common people, drawing a smile on my face. They're only gentle when they request something, and never have something to offer (not even their time), and the people here keeps trying to help them without expecting nothing just to receive, as a final gratitude, a self-definitory message.

But I'm sure the next guy to appear here with a suggestion, comment or question will be open arms received

This is why this community is great.

Enaitz,

Trolls do what they do best, hide under bridges!

Part of the price of having an open discussion forum.

Anyhow, got a question for you (and a statement I guess).

I know you run more than one KM, so which one or ones do you like best?

I find myself still using KM 0.9, GRE 1.7.13x [Brian's update] as my everyday browser, but the one that really gets my juices flowing is Dorian (and Hao' update) KMSMNOXUL. On my legacy OS (W98se), it really flies and seems to work just about everywhere. Of course there is the Unicode issue, but easily fixed after reading posts and I've experienced problems with macros from time to time, but overall. WOW!

Well, I didn't want to have to answer to this question but I'm gonna answer anyway :-)

I use my spanish (with little not "hardcore" modifications) version with the latest Brian Brun's patch over it.

I do not use either Dorian's or Hao's for a very simply reason: I know they are (or will soon be) far better versions than mine, but as the last months I've had to do lots of things on the computer (my laws degree final project, new MAME version, rebuilding my web page, etc) I do not have time these days to, or better, I do not feel like, starting another computer based job, and I know that when you use a beta version you have the duty to submit bugs and get involved on the work.

And I even have another task on my desk, the requested by Alain translation which I should have started last week and will be started next week (sorry Alain for delaying your work).

So, my choose of browser is not based on technical reasons, it's mostly because of personal reasons.

Enaitz,

Hey, 3 years down the drain if you don't do the law work would be a real PITA!

I test, but not as often as I should, as I am often busy on work (freelancer) projects and when it comes in, it comes in in buckets.

So, in short, I have all the latest KM's up and running, but my choice for everyday is Brian's patch and the NOXUL version Alpha 2 (for now, anyway)!

ndebord.

Not 3 years, in Spain it takes 5 years (supposing you pass absolutely all the exams, in my case it took me 6 years :-) but everybody knows about my lazyness.

Luckily I finished it last week.
