K-Meleon Web Browser Forum

I originally installed K-meleon 1.5.1 on a Win 95 machine because it offerred higher security & encryption than old Outlook Express 5 browser, even on dated OS. It has worked beautifully for years, accessing secure sites. I decided to upgrade to 1.5.4 because there is one site I need to communicate with my physician that 1.5.1 cannot get onto. However, when I installed 1.5.4 over 1.5.1, I get an error message that SSL is turned off and I need to check that my directories aren't read-only write-protected. Well, I checked all the directories for such status, and they're all read/write.
I tried uninstalling the new 1.5.4 and then erasing everything in the K-meleon directories, too. Then I reinstalled 1.5.4 clean. Still same problem. Plus any separate program files I may've installed to make 1.5.1 work are gone. I cannot now even access secure sites I could with 1.5.1, although the browser seems to be working fine otherwise. (Well, there are some tiny font display issues; but they're not as important as getting SSL to work properly.)
I cannot find anyplace in the browser menus and screens to enable SSL. There is an "edit privacy" configuration page with all sorts of complex code and a warning not to tamper ignorantly with it. (I'm not stupid, but I am ignorant of what to do.) I can find documentation that says I need to make this change, but not one word about how to do so. I hope somebody knowledgeable will read this and help.
The only way I can contact my doctor through his practice-provided system now is to get in my car and go to a public library or a restaurant with WI-FI and use my laptop. At home my only Internet connection is the Win95 machine with dial-up through modem. K-meleon 1.5.1 had been my way to get onto most secure sites, but now I've lost that access without gaining the access I need.
Please explain: What do I need to do, and how do I go about doing it? Blessings to anyone who can help.
You can turn SSL on using EDIT - PREFERENCES - PRIVACY & SECURITY - ENCRYPTION - ENCRYPTED TRANSMISSION.

Entirely indirect in relation to your problems and questions, some things you should know:
- It's relatively easy to keep multiple versions of K-Meleon at the same time without having them conflict with one another. Keeping each in their own folder, profiles and all. It's beyond the scope of this posting to explain how to do so and I don't have a link handy. Considering the amazing customization possibilities presented by K-Meleon, overwriting or deleting any prior installation is an atrocity.
- You can download previous official versions of K-Meleon, the accompanying release notes and bug fix texts may be relevant reading for you -- http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/download.php
- You can update some of those older versions with the 'unofficial updaters', the most notable component being the Gecko rendering engine updates -- http://kmext.sourceforge.net/updater.htm
- The browser (K-Meleon, Firefox, Seamonkey, etc.) is the interface you see and interact with while the rendering engine (Gecko/GRE) is what renders or translates various webpage code into visible form (those browsers all share this same core Gecko Rendering Engine). As time progesses webpages use new code that requires new rendering engines, thus the need for updates, and Win9x machines are now mostly doomed to using the old tech indefinitely.
- I cannot address Win95 and SSL but I'll add THIS thread to the one one mentioned in the previous posting. They seem to best apply to your situation.
- A Win95 user may find very useful help at http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/8-windows-959898seme
- Opera may be a useful alternative to K-Meleon for Win95/98, though it is unclear which versions are best used for which operating systems and particuilar hardware limitations. Generally speaking Opera requires better hardware to run smoothly and as far as I'm concerned K-Meleon (1.5.3 / 1.5.4) is the only real choice for my Win98 pc.
Am not able to watch video in my computer
Browsers are not able to render all video content themselves.
You need to install the helper application and activate the plugin for Mozilla browsers. Mozilla are all browser that are not IE.
For most video like youtube... the needed helper application is the Flash player.
