Gecko 1.8.1.10, 1.8.1.11 & K-Meleon 1.1.3, 1.1.4?

It's great that K-Meleon got updated to 1.1.3. Unfortunately, it's based on the Gecko 1.8.1.10 engine (as was FF 2.0.0.10), which introduced a "canvas regression" bug (see www.mozilla.org), which Mozilla then fixed 3 days after the release of FF 2.0.0.10 with FF 2.0.0.11 + Gecko 1.8.1.11.

My question is, will there be a quick update of K-Meleon to keep up and fix this bug? It's very unfortunate that the K-Meleon update point happened to be based on the Gecko engine with the aforementioned bug.

I know K-Meleon doesn't have the staffing of Mozilla, and consequently isn't updated as often, but this seems like a quick fix to bring K-Meleon up to the current level Gecko where it can function well for the next few months. Any chance we can have a K-Meleon 1.1.4, or at least a 1.1.3.1 that will use the Gecko 1.8.1.11 engine?

Thank you, and keep up the good work!

I don't know why people is interested in change to Gecko 1.8.1.11 when only canvas fix is different. How many of your usually visit web pages used canvas methods?
I answer for you: NONE! tongue sticking out smiley
Must you interested in 1.9 Gecko updates, yes it's? smiling smiley

1.8.1.11 is not a security update, but only is
related to webpages that use canvas.
Such webpages are very rare.
1.8.1.10 is as safe as 1.8.1.11 is.
So an update to 1.8.1.11 is not urgent at all.

Rare? Maybe, but let me mention only one such a site, and you will agree with me it is not an unimportant one: Googlegroups.
I hate it to switch over to IE when I need to read/write postings from locations I have no real newsreader.

This concerns only graphics to a certain extent.
Posting and reading should always be possible.
The upcoming KM 1.1.4 will have the new 1.8.1.12 Gecko,
and this should solve all these problems.

Fred,

the graphics would not import to me. Problem is that I get the graphics and all, I also get the tree of the thread, but what I don't get are the postings itself.

Perfect! Just the right timing.
I must install an entire pool of older machines with not much steem under the hood (cpu and RAM likewise) and ofcourse I will put KM in the OS-deploymentimages.
I were thinking about going back to 1.1.2, but now I have just enough time to test 1.1.4 and probably that would be what I would integrate in the images.

Installed 1.1.4, problem still persists.
Maybe somebody can look at this gglgroups archived thread:
http://groups.google.de/group/microsoft.public.windows.file_system/browse_frm/thread/93b40fd7ea746f68/6eb0cafc07dd4689?lnk=st&q=eugen+mezei#6eb0cafc07dd4689

Appears correctly in IE 6.0, but not in K-M.

You must have javascript enabled to view the page.
After enabling it reload the page.
At the right hand side towards the top should a link
"Options" appear. Click on that.
A selection left for the wanted standard appears.
After choosing a view, the whole range of posts
should become visible.
If you still should see nothing, try to change your
userAgent information about which browser you use in
Preferences.
I am using at the moment a modified 1.5alpha/1.1.8.12,
I hope that it will work for you as well.

Fred,

Javascript was enabled all the time (1.1.3 and 1.1.4).
I switched from three view to plain view through the Options link as you suggested and in plain view the postings appear.
The postings do not appear in three view even if I change the useragent options (tried them all, IE7 makes things even worse).

Interestingly only the postings in in the microsoft.public.* hierarchy appear (better said don't appear) cripled. I have no problems with other groups.
Do MS have some proprietary protocols running on their newsservers that googlegropus can not handle correctly?

KM 1.1.3 and 1.1.4, Windows 98SE.

You seem to use a userContent.css blocking the word
"public", which makes that the frame containing the
tree view in microsoft.public is regarded as an advert and will be blocked.
Close the browser first.
Go to your Profile folder and you will find your
userContent.css in the subfolder chrome.
Open it with notepad and search for the line containing
"public".
Disable this filtering line by setting a # in front of this
line.
Go to File/Save in notepad and save.
Restart the browser, and the tree view should be available.
I hope that this helps.

Fred,

I found two userContent.css although located on other paths then the one you indicated:
C:\Program Files\K-Meleon\defaults\profile\chrome
C:\Program Files\K-Meleon\Profiles\default\rpsm3eyd.slt\chrome

Searched both for "public" but found nothing.
I use the Phoenity skin, but it is the same if I use Klassik.

There could be a third userContent.css in
C:\Documents....\yourusername\applicationdata\K-Meleon\Profile\....slt\chrome
or similar, or in a german system
C:\Dokumente...\username\Anwendungsdaten\K-Meleon\Profile\...slt\chrome
if you selected "Multiuser" during your last browser installation.

No, this are the only two files. To be sure I searched the entire systemdisk (Csmiling smiley, but I was pretty shure before too because when installing it to Win9x I always let the profiles in the KM-folder, I put them into Userfolders only on realmultiuser windows (NT based).

There are also versions, which have an adblock.css
in the same folder as userContent.css.
Look there, if this file adblock.css includes a filtering
line for "public".
I am quite sure that a filter "public" is the reason
for your little problem.

I installed a fresh KM 1.4 on a laptop I "inherited" and which I slimmed down of IE 5.5 as it is a P150 with only 64MB RAM running Win95. [1] On this laptop the aformentioned group works as supposed.
Than I looked on the Win98SE desktop machine on which the problem occoured and indeed I found adblock.css in two different folders and edited "public" with an # in front of that line. Editing the file in the chrome folder did the trick.
So thank you for your help, it was effective.
On the desktop I have KM installed beginning with some version before 1.1 if I remember correctly and have never deinstalled old version, I have updated them. In fact at the beginning of adblock.css one can read: "Filter Rules collected by Fred (taken from K-Meleon 0.9.12)".

Eugen

[1] I stripped it down to IE4 and intend to remove IE4 also with the IE remover from 98lite. But I was surprised to see that IE4 is -not impressingly but noticeable- faster than KM. Maybe I test this a bit further.
