I just ran a test for something else and found that tabs are always available in KM 1.6.0x even when turned off in preferences.
I un-checked the box for tabbed browsing and then restarted KM. The items in the file menu for tabs stll work. I could get a new tab.
I will do some more checking, but I need some others to see if it happens on their systems.
Can't verify. Worked properly here. KM 1.6a4 pre beta WinXP SP3

I think you are right. I think I got mixed up because the new and close window buttons look like the new and close tab buttons. I must have been doing too many things at once when I thought I saw the items in the file menu.
This time, I am very happy to be wrong.
