For dark windows themes (dim backgrounds, white\gray fonts) URLs in address bar appear as black fonts written over black background. It makes them hardly readable.
K-Meleon also seems to brighten up address bar background for https sites, so if font coloring is to be fixed, then sites with https would give an issue.
Since 1.6, or so, the text color of the urlbar text was hardcoded. Earlier it took the system color.
When I switched from 1.1 to 1.6 I didn't complain (as 1.6 was out of development because I switched sooooo late), but it is true that it was a problem to me too and I don't have a very dark theme/appearance.
Unless you request in the current 76 development thread, I don't bet Dorian will change it. I don't know why it was set earlier, anyway.
But the point I'm writing this is because what you said about HTTPS aren't a problem, as the background for HTTPS and broken HTTPS can be manually set with the preferences "browser.urlbar.highlight.secure" and "browser.urlbar.highlight.broken".
Among other technical details, you can download a macro from JamesD to change those colors easily:

But it is shame that normal url bar background color can't be changed
