YouTube videos always freeze after 25min of viewing (Goanna)
Posted by: Rain
Date: September 06, 2018 09:44AM

At every 25min of viewing/listening time the videos freeze/stop (the sound too).

On KM Pro however, only the image freezez while the sound still works tho.

Is there a fix for this on Goanna? This seems to happen with all videos on Goanna for months now at least in my case.

I'm using:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:52.9) Gecko/20100101 Goanna/3.4 Firefox/52.9 K-Meleon/76.0 (portable) on XP Pro SP3. I've already did that video video decoder swap yet the result is the same.

Any ideas?

I'm afraid there is no solution. This is an old bug that even mozilla can't fix.

I see, well at least it's not that huge of a problem i just have to refresh the page every 30min.

PS

Thank you very much for all the hard work you've put in in giving us Goanna smiling smiley

@Rain
If flash is involved, there was a user who accepted a solution (link) for Firefox two years ago. You can post a link where this happens for others to test.

@roytam1
Something on bugzilla?

@Rain

I used to have something like this, but I completely disabling all kinds of caching and use tricky traffic filtering helped and now there is no problem. Some types of caching cant be disabled through interface (not all).

pref("browser.cache.disk.enable", false);
pref("browser.cache.disk.capacity", 0);
pref("browser.cache.disk_cache_ssl", false);
pref("browser.cache.memory.enable", false);
pref("network.http.use-cache", false);
pref("media.cache_size", 0);
pref("browser.cache.offline.capacity", 0);
pref("browser.cache.offline.enable", false);
pref("extensions.getAddons.cache.enabled", false);
pref("browser.sessionstore.privacy_level", 2);
pref("browser.sessionstore.privacy_level_deferred", 2);

Checked on two BBC videos (40 minutes each) all worked without freezing. By the way, often after a certain time on YouTube exist embedded advertising (and incomplete blocking, which leads to attempts to run unavailable ad unit). Here it is necessary to block even a ping of a resource. Problem was relevant about six months ago, now everything works well.

Tried it (except for the last two, they didn't appear in options) same issue after 25min...

@anonymous

I haven't installed Flash Player since portable KM didn't seem to need it, am i wrong here? And in need of a portable flash file?

@siria

Bookmarked it and will read it this weekend. Thank you.

A little off topic, but is there a Goanna-like thread on the PM forums where roytam still releases XP versions of NM?

Just make sure that about:addons -> Plugins shows nothing. XP SP3 test platform is available, but the link you used and the modified preference settings from about:support are still unknown.

The entries in about:plugins should cause no problems. Need one of your YouTube links and the modified media related preference settings (if any) from about:support to start testing.

I don't think theres any need to waste any more time on this. And ALL YouTube videos over 25min long freeze, no need for a particular link.

I think it's still worth a bit time, considering it's not only your prob, but a general one.
And this anonymous here has given some extremely helpful tips in the past too.

Tried it (except for the last two, they didn't appear in options) same issue after 25min...

Would try those 2 as well, since Hermes says they are needed.
Just add them manually in about:config, right-click and create new...
Just because a pref doesn't appear in options or aboutconfig, doesn't mean anything at all: Lots of fundamental prefs are hidden this way from users! For example the global useragent override pref, or the pref for default-blocking of iframes (FB&twitter everywhere), for Ajax (XHR-pref), font-downloading, html5-videos (media) etc.
If unsure, just make a backup copy of current prefs.js in the current profile folder before testing.

@siria

I've manually created the last two as you said (boolean has no numbers option so i made them string instead or should they be integer?)

EDIT: Same issue after adding those two. Freezez at 25.

I was not trying to imply that anonymous was not helpful. I just didn't want people to waste time on this if it was only important to me, but if we're all in the same pot, then sure, why not? smiling smiley

Yes it's certainly not just your own prob. Over at the msfn-forum it's been mentioned a couple times too.
If Hermes block-all-caching trick can help, then most people who do want caching probably won't use it, but if it's really annoying the them this group of prefs could be toggled all together in a little macro (just which GUI? keyboard shortcut? button? menu?)

Hermes
pref("browser.sessionstore.privacy_level", 2);
pref("browser.sessionstore.privacy_level_deferred", 2);

If the values are not in "quotes" at the end of the pref lines, then they are pure number prefs, yes that means INT (=only whole numbers possible, no commas or dots, can have a minus)
How to change: right-click in about:config to "reset" them, close tab, open it again, and create prefs again as INT

Back again. Downloaded the latest version of Goanna and did all that hermes and you instructed me to do, the result is the same... The picture freezez at 25 and sound dies out 3-4 min later.

I mostly need this fixed so that i can listen to longer soundtracks smiling smiley

On a side note about videos, not necessarily related to that youtube prob, but something that surprised me mighty the last days:

1) A KM76 or Goanna (?) user tried to get rid of plugin-container for videos. He disabled not only all ipc-prefs, but it sounded like he even deleted the plugin-container.exe completely, as was described in a tech article. Yet, that thing still DID run, although it didn't exist anymore, and all other things he tried didn't help a thing either. Then he found a solution:
http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?1,147592,147621#msg-147621
Quote
Shiro
I solved the problem imself
When i uninstall firefox completely k-meleon stop running the plugin

2) A user of NewMoon (Goanna-engine like KM) had trouble getting Netflix to play on XP. Had something to do with Netflix dropping silverlight and now needing DRM, which is not a native part of Goanna. At the msfn-forum they gave him lots of tips and instructions etc. Finally he got it running again, in Firefox. But:
https://msfn.org/board/topic/177768-netflix-playback/
Quote
WoodyXP
Well good news! I retried all my previous fixes. Then tried Firefox like you suggested and got Netflix working again. The funny part is that now Netflix works on Mypal and New Moon as well. Go Figure!

Conclusion:
It's not only KM-settings and KM-plugins which matter, but also the settings and plugins in the Firefox appdata and userdata! Which KM seems to silently use too. I can already see the replies about how this would go without saying, nothing surprising... But it certainly was a huge surprise to me! Especially the first case, where Shiro had clearly disabled all the prefs in KM, yet the browser simply ignored that and borrowed the exe from neighbor Firefox!

So we have to consider now, when someone has a prob in KM, and another user has it not, the root of this difference might just be different Firefox plugins.

Regarding youtube, could it be that perhaps this messageChannel thing is somehow involved? Just a wild idea, because both probs were said to occur in Firefox only. Or some other privacy setting. Or perhaps that SSD-killer pref in FF, which caused already other video probs? (browser.sessionstore.interval=300000)

Yes. And for quick update checking you can even jump directly to his download links, for example KM-Goanna: https://o.rthost.win/kmeleon/

@anonymous:
Sorry but have long since given up trying to watch youtube directly, just not enough resources after they killed flash. Although html5 videos do start in Opera12.02 and KM74-goanna, but the frames load extremely slow, stammering and stuttering, 1 frame every few seconds... But downloading the mp4's with some web service (e.g. qdownloader.net) and then watching local still works great.

Never tested your KM74-g22, but YouTube should send VP8 files and no MP4 files for that browser. Acceleration is disabled because Gecko blacklists all old video drivers. We add exceptions for our drivers in forks. In one of the XP test setups, the freeze after 25 minutes test dropped frames and looked greenish in KM, before I added ffmpeg files.

Hmm, I suppose you're not explaining this mainly to me (slightly over my head again, and KMG74 way to crashy anyway), but in the hopes that other interested people can use it better.

But while you're here, please take a look over there too? :cool:

Who else has used KM74-g22 on 9x more than once? It is crashy on 9x, because it contains a KM for W2K+.

About your teeny tiny addon:
Extract some unused xpi-addons from your collection. Search for string 'appstartup' in js-files in components folder. Pick the smallest XPI-file that works in KM. Add the UA init lines to the end of appstartup function. Test it.

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:52.9) Gecko/20100101 Goanna/3.4 Firefox/52.9 K-Meleon/76.0
(portable) on XP Pro SP3.

It doesn't help for this 23min-prob, just as general info:
There have been several user reports already that some major websites (twitter, youtube etc.) have started boycotting XP. Especially video/media related, either they don't play at all or are stammering, and the websites will not tell you they do this intentionally. But users have reported that quite often those probs go away if they simply spoof their system in the useragent!

If you want to try it, you can for example copy your original string above and replace NT 5.1 with NT 6.1 (Win7)
If you don't know how, use either a macro like useragents2018 or open about:config, right-click and create that pref manually:
general.useragent.override = Mozilla.... (STRING)

Yes of course, but same goes for KM1.6, which is even for XP+, yet works quite stable smiling smiley Not from the beginning either, it took awhile, but there's hope it can be done. Other people have tried KMG74 over at the MSFN forum too, and it gets clearer that the main probs are caused by slightly buggy KernelEx update v17. But now that's finally in the works again. And my hopes are rising again smiling smiley

Will try again with the UA-site-init addon, just will take a lot of time searching around again for fitting examples.

No. Adding ffmpeg filters fixed lost frames and greenish playback with lav filters using blacklisted Intel graphics drivers. It was just one of the hardware setups I used to confirm freezing.
