is there any way to make k-meleon work as single-document interface app, without content tabs? like internet explorer did until version 7 and firefox did until... around version 2.1 I guess?
if there are no settings or extensions that can do it then pointers about how to write such an extension are welcome as well

If I understood you, you want to use windows instead tabs, so go to Preferences panel (gear button or Edit menu if you have that toolbar visible) > browsing > tabbed browsing > untick Enable tabbed browsing.
