image color problem?

I just installed K-Meleon 0.6 and it's working fine except that when it
displays images it looks like it isn't using enough colors. Jpegs look
just awful; gifs naturally end up looking a bit better but even the Google
logo looks a little funny. Mozilla didn't seem to have this problem.
Anyone know how to fix this?

First: what's your color depth set to?
Second: what about hex colors (e.g., backgrounds of tables and such)?

The windows color depth is 256 colors. (Is there a separate way to
set the kmeleon color depth?)

I'm not sure about the hex colors-- the slashdot header backgrounds
look like they are a slightly lighter blue-green in kmeleon than in ie5,
and the sidebar looks bluish instead of grey. On this page, the blue and
grey in the message backgrounds look about the same in both browsers
look the same, but the sidebar is more green in ie and more olive in
kmeleon. Sorry for not firing up mozilla but it runs very slowly on my
system. I'll probably try that later.

I can't see how Mozilla could have been any better, because apps cannot physically display more colours than Windows is set to show...

The differences between browsers will presumably be just how the browser has dithered the image to try and create the correct colour.

I'm not sure how that is either, but Kmeleon is definitely using fewer colors
(or the wrong colors, but it really looks like fewer-- maybe 16 instead of 256?)
than Mozilla when displaying the exact same images. If you really want, I
could try to prove it with screen captures. It is not a subtle effect.

OK-- I rebooted and the problem went away. I'm still no wiser about what
was causing it but at least it is gone.

This is an ongoing problem, and I have submitted it as a bug report (155). I have replicated this on 3 different systems, 1 laptop, 2 desktops. The laptop runs Windows Me and the desktops run XP.

I have a screen shot of both k-meleon and MS-Explorer on the k-meleon screen-shot page and you can clearly tell that k-meleon is only displaying 16 colors, while MS-Explorer is rendering 256 colors.

I think Mozilla has reported this problem too. We are aware of it and we'll try and get ir corrected if possible.
