K-Meleon Not Working - Pages not Display, going to webpages not working

So, I just reinstalled Windows 98 on an ancient HP computer. Now, Internet Explorer 4 is too old to work properly, and I heard this browser should be able to work even on this ancient computer. However, there are two problems.

Version 1.0:
This version displays pages fine, however, when I enter a URL into the URL box at the top, and hit enter, the url I entered disappears from the box, and then it leaves me sitting at the page I used to be at. However, links on the page work, and the bookmarks also work.

Now, I tried the three versions after that, and the problem is even worse:
1.01, 1.02, and 1.1 don't even display the pages. Apparently it can't even load the default page with info on K-Meleon. Nothing ever gets displayed. Entering something into the URL box does nothing.

Any ideas on fixing these bugs? Or another browser which can work on this heap of junk.

I don't know why this problem appears in your Windows 98.
this used to be a problem in Linux with wine only.
You can try my unofficial variation K-Meleon-NX-1814 ,
which works in Linux. Download the zip file here :

http://rapidshare.com/files/35526466/K-Meleon-NX-1814.zip.html

Note : This version works only if you have the files mfc71.dll, msvcp71.dll and msvcr71.dll in your system or in your K-Meleon
folder. If you need them, they are still available under the name dll-installer on the KM 8.2+ website at :

http://www.lontronics.nl/index.php?m=0006

Use it to install the files on your system. If necessary ,
copy the files manually to the K-Meleon main folder.

I hope, that this variation will work in your case,

Fred

Some links. For K-Meleon (or any other modern browser) You need updated Comctl32

MFC42.dll and C libraries.

You will find that stated in the trouble shooting section K-Meleon release notes.

That is what alain's and Fred's comments about system libraries is about.

Other browsers. You can get a standalone IE. 5.01 ( which is the fastet IE that is compatible if soewhat quirky to most modern web standarts ). This package will also update some dll needed by other software.
I do not recommend IE 5.5 or later since they are much slower and have no real advatages unless You update to the last rather slow IE 6.

You will find many new and some still good older browsers at http://browsers.evolt.org/.
They still seem to have the huge IE. 5.01 update for Win98 that should bring some of the system up to date as well.

Btw. Your system is not updated. That is no K-Meleon bug smiling smiley That is how I see it.
