Tabs not resizing in Vista
Posted by: canmar
Date: November 16, 2008 04:42PM

This issue, it seems, had been covered in a previous post buried in a Crash Report, so I wanted to bring it to the forefront. Using Vista 64-bit, the tabs are not resizing, so that when I open an additional tab that is wider than the length of the tab bar, K-M freezes. Setting min and max widths at the default 10 is a workaround, but a problem arise with that: the tabs become so small that only one title letter appears, so impossible to determine what that tab is. Has anyone come up with a solution? TIA to all.

This issue had been covered in a previous post buried in a Crash Report.

If You can confirm the post (copy&paste the original URL), the procedure & the exact Win(version&update... & we hope that Dorian has access), plus K-Meleon version to reproduce - post all relevant info here & if more confirm submit it to bug tracker.

p.s. "& hope that Dorian has access" = we cannot expect our core dev to have access to all wins. And we may want to collect money to pay for OSes so they can be tested with new K-Meleons.

Evening everyone, sorry for the delay in replying but it took me a while to find the post re. the tab freezing issue. Here it is:

Hi there,
I have a bug with Kmeleon continually crashing...
It happens when I open more tabs than the screen width,
which I do occassionally, then it just freezes and I
have to close it all down (session recovery works though!)
But it's still a pain. Could be a conflict with Vista,
but still, Firefox doesn't crash when I do this so it's
not the Gecko engine I'm guessing...
I am running 1.5.1 and I think I upgraded from 1.1.5,
but I was definitely not getting this problem with that
version and I kind of regret upgrading because of it.
Thanks.

As for the details, I am running Windows Vista 64-bit with SP 1, with k-m 1.5.1; have 4Gb RAM, so memory is definitely not a problem. Thanks to all.

the crash majick experienced seems related to the layers.dll plugin being activated.. it appears he did a 'dirty' upgrade from 1.1. to 1.5 leaving layers.dll active which will definitely cause a crash when opening tabs.
(layers.dll is obsolete and not needed with 1.5.x)

as for your problem; as gunter has mentioned, testers and devs don't have regular access to vista which is essential to address bugs/conflicts specific to that os and that makes reproducing a bug quite problematic.

for now try this: place tab bar at the bottom
preferences>browsing>tabbed browsing>display at bottom:check (restart km)
test to see if it's resizing as it should.. i recall some had a certain problem with tabs which was resolved when placed at the bottom.. this might not be to your liking but it will help understand what's causing this bug.

Please if you are using 1.5.X version and you have "layers.dll" file in "kplugins" subfolder delete it.

Tried to place tab bar at the bottom, same result, freezes after number of tabs exceeds screen width. Also verified, no layers.dll file in the kplugins folder sad smiley

i was thinking about something.. the close button was introduced with 1.5.1 right?

please try this.. uninstall kmeleon completely, and download version 1.5.0 from the download page:
http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/download.php

test it out and see if it has the same problem, if it doesn't.. that probably means the bug is related to the close button.

EDIT: alain, if possible can you test that as well on your brother's pc

Wow! This is 1.5.2 RC. I had to copy the contents of the $[31] folder to my install folder for this version in order to get it to run. Was not sure what to do with the $PLUGINSDIR folder. Have done nothing so far.

Big changes on the menu bar. Wonder if the old Klassic skin will work?

@ JamesD:

The $PLUGINSDIR folder have only the installer files, it not needed to run if you extract files manually. smiling smiley

Thanks Dorian!

I've installed 1.52RC and the problem still exists in this version.

How do I send you a crash report?

Just to add, I tried opening a group of tabs in v1.50, and the same problem exists. Is this a long term problem with K Meleon in Vista?

thank you ben for testing with 1.5.0, this rules out the close button issue.. it seems that this problem started with new adaptation of tabs instead of layers; so it probably doesn't exist on 1.1.x versions. the problem is; there didn't use to be many vista users and since that couldn't be tested, bugs specific to vista would normally go unnoticed. i'm sure the devs will be working on those bugs; thanks to you and other vista users who report those bugs.

canmar, ben and other vista users..does this this bug exist on the classic mode interface(original cairo api like win95), without aero themes? or only when aero theme is applied?

thanks ben, does the crash report work in vista or requires administrative privileges? dorian doesn't have vista and needs that report : http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?8,86372

Install the crash report plugin and see whether you can send us a report. Use this plugin with official releases only! (anything else is useless)

Thanks.

crash k-meleon.. make sure it's enabled in preferences>k-meleon plugins and start opening many tabs and crash as normal, a dialog will popup to send crash dump to k-meleon's site..click ok.
