the last working flash version for windows 9x and me is version 9.. you should be able to find it at http://www.oldversion.com/Macromedia-Flash-Player.html. if you don't want to hassle with installation.. you can download the plugin directly from this link:
http://kmeleon.swiftfree.net/NPSWF32.dll

just save the file in k-meleon\plugins folder
and test it there
http://www.lizasnyder.com

it's an older version but most sites will accept it without problems.

i've just tested flash 10 plugin on windows 98 with kmeleon and it works without any problems. i've tested it on local swf files and on several sites, including sites that require flash 10 specifically and it doesn't crash or have any missing features.

so what adobe sez that flash 10 doesn't support win 9x is a complete lie to please microsoft.. maybe the installer won't run but the plugin itself functions fine.audio plays, action script works, transitions work, there is nothing that doesn't make flash 10 crippled on 9x.

download the flash 10 plugin only(no installer) from this link and extract the files in k-meleon\plugins folder (make sure npswf32.dll is saved in the plugins folder)

I am also using k-meleon and windows ME. I have tried the above suggestions, but the flash 10 .dll into my addons folder, and after that failed to work, the flash player 9 installer. Neither one has solved this problem. I have even switched to Mozilla as user agent, but I continue to get this problem. Any more help/advice? I like this k-meleon brower, it does some to be more efficient than mozilla for my hardware (Pentium II 450, 160MB ram, 3.2GB hdd), but the lack of flash support is making it hard to use certain webpages.

what addons folder? make sure the npswf32.dll is saved inside your plugins folder, that is: k-meleon\plugins
and then in kmeleon, click on help menu>select about plugins
the plugin should be listed there or go to this site:
http://entropymine.com/jason/plugins/listplugins.html

if the plugin isn't listed then you probably didn't save it in the correct folder, if it is listed go to http://lizasnyder.com the flash there is compatible with all versions and it has audio and transitions, if it works there then it should work with all regular sites that use flash.. to test actionscript go to any flash games site.

you can try this as well to toggle between different flash versions..

this will help you test what versions work best for your system

I think that you should try the (updated) Flash version 9
for Windows 98/ME for Firefox from the site

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/

which has the same security level as Flash version 10.
There is also a safe Flash version 9 for certain
Linux distros which have an older libc , and can therefore
not use Flash 10.
As always simply put npswf32.dll into the folder
plugins isnside the K-Meleon root folder.

default plugin can be replaced by DefaultPluginPro

For some users it might be of interest to replace the Mozilla DefaultPlugin by a better one, the so called 'DefaultPluginPro':

1) Go the side http://entropymine.com/jason/defaultpluginpro/
2) Download defpluginpro-1.0.0.zip (version 1.0.0; 70KB; 29 Jun 2002).
3) Extract the file npdefpluginpro.dll from the zip and copy it into your
k-meleon folder */k-meleon/plugins/ (not kplugins !!).
4) Should you find in this folder the original DefaultPlugin npnul32.dll,
then move it into another place or rename it to npnul32.dll.off.
5) Documentation can be found in the readme.txt file enclosed.
6) Type about:plugins in your K-Meleon browser command line. If the
DefaultPluginPro is installed correctly, you schold find an entry which shows
you that ius has been activated.

The advantage is, if a flash doesn't work, then you can use the right
mouse button over the flash animation to open a window for more informations.
Works well, I have tested it. On my system, which has Windows 98 (not SE) the flash player version 10 does not run, but version 9 works fine. If I use 10
for test purposes, the DefaultPluginPro gives more informations of the flash, that
is used on the web site.

Sorry, if my English is not well, I am a German.

Best Regards, Raman

Adobe flashplayer for K-Meleon and Windows 98

Hello Yogi,

Your posting above will probably misguide some users, because the highest version of adobe flashplayer (file: NPSWF32.dll) that runs on my windows 98 after testing out all versions from 8 to 10 by copying them one by one into the K-Meleon\plugins folder is

version 9.0.47.0 (also called: 9.0 r47),
which you can download here: http://kmeleon.swiftfree.net/NPSWF32.dll .

The version 9.0.159.0 (also called: 9.0 r159) you refered to, which I downloaded directly from the adobe site as the actual plugin for netscape DOES NOT WORK with the copy-into-folder method. And I really don't know why!
It may be that under other systems, e. g. win 98SE or 2000, or other circumstances it will run.

If anyone has managed to get a higher version of flasplayer than 9.0.47.0 running on win98 I would like to know how this can be achieved.

Best Regards,
Raman

Hi Raman,

sorry for the misguidance.
Unfortunately I can't test on other Windows than 2k.
The reason I uploaded the latest version was Fred's suggestion to try the (updated) Flash version 9.
