A Routine for Newbie Problems instead of "create a new Profile"

Would it be possible to offer an additional download version as listed below?

Because:

It seems to be hard for some newbies to K-Meleon to follow the instructions
given here by others.

The last resort of many sharing their knowledge here, then, is to "create a new profile",
without regard to changes the advised may have made - mostly unknowingly -
to files in the K-M Program Folder.

Many Windows users do not realize easily how to avoid creating
a "profile.ini.txt" instead of a profile.ini.

Many newbies suspect the Browser, their OS, or malware as the
culprits for bugs in their K-M installations.

With K-Meleon, it would be easy - and much less taxing for both parties - to
convince them that neither is the case, by offering the following download:

  • a zipped basic K-Meleon installation (can be handled by Windows natively)
  • portable (profile.ini included, need not touch their previous installation)
  • with the instruction to unzip to their Desktops (no writinRights issues)
  • without the loader
  • without the defaulter
  • without AdBlockPlus, for a start, and the advice to install that only after
having installed & tested their other extensions - see note below.
  • with an extra read me on HowTo transform that into a proper
local installation as soon as it is complete & satisfying.
(I'd volunteer for that, and I think I have a reference now to prove
I can do this kind of thing - see my post on Sessions/Groups/Nicks

Now, the NOTE concerning AdBlockPlus, an extension which I value highly, and without
which I personally would not like browsing for long... but:

Quote
Uninstalling Adblock Plus
from The AdBlockPlus K-Meleon Page
Note that deactivating Adblock Plus plugin will only remove it from the user interface, usually the extension will continue blocking in the background. To uninstall Adblock Plus you need to remove all the files you installed with the ZIP package.

(btw: this does not even mention the case that a user instructed to deactivate
the plugin deactivates the macro only, instead)
(btw2: can we be sure there's no other extension staying active
in the background after deactivating?)

Good idea - and especially along with the volunteer already grinning smiley

Just a little note, guess AdBlock "plus" is not included anyway in a default KM download, only an old and simple version, consisting of the adblock.css and nothing more. Can't remember having read in this forum that this one ever gave a problem, as long as it was switched off in the Privacy menu. Switched Off CSS does nothing, guess he means that uninstalling his "Plus"-GUI still leaves the css-sheet working as before. That's true, but only if it's activated...

"Blush"
Hi, siria,

you ARE right, and I really had forgotten AdBlockPlus doesn't come out-of-the-box...

But ABP really is what I was referring to, coming from disrupted's

Quote

: "if links are still covered then it's probably a macro injecting css
restart in normal profile(you can delete test profile)
open preferences and macro extension and try unckecking non-default macros and restart and test with the website"
here.

which would not help much if some macro might keep working after having been unchecked.

In any case, I am quite positive that the routine I suggest here would have eased finding solutions for the issues that duffy2009, forever (starting here), and Jim had to struggle with recently.

The kmm and the kplugin are IMHO for the K-Meleon gui only.
The AdBlockPlus blocking routines are AFAIK active via the nsAdblockPlus.js in components.

Yes exactly, and I don't have that plugin in components, because I didn't install ABPlus. By default KM has only the adblock.css, but that can be easily disabled with it's own Privacy macro, no prob at all ;-) And of course it never asked me for updates and such either.
It's only extensions that install additional files like that one, that may keep working in the background even if 'their' macro is disabled, and that aren't quite easy to find.

Does that go to say that as soon as a new profile is used, ABP really IS inactive?

Oh, sorry, just read what you linked to above - so it is a fact that not in ALL cases it is 100% sure that a new profile solves problems that were caused by elements added by the user after the original installation.
So you are supporting my above suggestion?

Sorry for not understanding.

Adblock+ (e.g. nsAdblockPlus.js ) works in a new profile but the patterns.ini does not contain any adblocking stuff. So it works but it does not block any adds grinning smiley // I can only guess what component starts the import of the blocking patterns - likely the dll.

Apart from that: IMHO an extra edition that should work under almost any conditions when the problem that otherwise prevents running is not clear is a good idea.

This helps users that only want to test whether they like K-Meleon enough to try to solve their troubles (with some info from here).
