There is a lot of extra space used just as a buffer between icons, as well as several buttons that I never use (the home button and history button which are both accessible from View>Home/History, and the Web Search Button which the URL bar or duckduckgo.com can do).

The buttons and their separator sticks don't take up very much room at all, but without them, the URL bar would have more room.

No "improvement" necessary, just user configuration.

The web search button has the additional feature, that the search text isn't necessary in the URL bar, but it also works from some selected text inside the page. Or right-clicking it allows to choose another search engine easily.

Anyway, click
Edit > Configuration > Toolbars
this opens the file toolbars.cfg. Find your buttons, each consists of a few lines in a block, and hide them all by placing comment signs (#) in the beginning of those lines.
