You might want to post that to the developers list to get more viewing.

I would but I assume you have to be registered to post to the developers list and the K-Meleon developers list like virtually all other mailing lists get spammed which is something I definitely don't want. If you want to repost it there then that's fine with me.

Don't the K-Meleon developers read this forum ?

Some of them read all of the posts. Some don't. The list is where all of the development activity takes place. I will post it to the list.

Another updated list:

K-Meleon 0.7 (build 700)
BUG - New windows steal focus during page loading even after you have
switched to another window.
BUG - Image tooltips are displayed too far down.
BUG - Form fields are sometimes lost when returning to a page via back.
RFE - Global history support.
RFE - URL autocompletion.
RFE - View page info support.
RFE - Bookmark keywords support.
RFE - Clear location bar history button in preferences.
RFE - Click on throbber to goto K-Meleon home page or perhaps whatever
kmeleon.general.throbberURL is set to.
ALT - Change default open home page key to Alt-Home to match Mozilla.
ALT - Change Edit->Preferences access key to 'e' to not conflict with
Edit->Paste ('P') and match Mozilla.
ALT - Bookmarks pulldown menu shouldn't have any access keys defined,
this overrides first letter bookmark access for C, A, and E.
ALT - Better up_directory macro:
$var = dirname($URL);
$var == "." ? "" : open($var);
ALT - Consider adding these prefs as defaults:
user_pref("nglayout.debug.disable_xul_cache", true);
user_pref("nglayout.debug.disable_xul_fastload", true);
ALT - Change alternate user agent strings to current versions of
Netscape (4.8 and 7.0) and remove obsolete IE 4.0 entry.
ALT - Default cache directory shouldn't have 'Cache\' on the end, this
creates K-Meleon\Profiles\default\xxxxxxxx.slt\Cache\Cache
since the preference specifies the cache parent directory.

Please consider changing the icon and default throbber, the current ones look too cartoony. The Netscape-like 'K' throbber on the resource page is cool. Also does the rebar plugin need to be in the distribution ? I can't imagine why anyone would want to move the menu bar around and rebar breaks the menu access keys.

I don't use the menu bar or access keys. My menu items are under the bookmarks toolbar button in a submenu. As evidenced here:

http://home.attbi.com/~jsnj/kmeleon.html

When the rebar is disabled the menu bar is automatically displayed on its own line taking up unnecessary browser real estate, even if the menu visibility pref is set to false. The rebarmenu.dll is 5.5kbs. That can't be considered bloat. Besides, you have the option to not install it during installation. KM is one of the few browsers that have so many UI options. Why would you want to impede its customization which is one of it's most appealing features? For 5kbs? I'm with you on the "K" throbber but that's just personal preference. I'm sure others hate it and love that ugly lizard.

Fair enough, I revoke my comments about the rebar plugin but it should be fixed as to not break the menu bar access keys. As for the icon and throbber, that really should be changed, that green lizard looks awful. A capital 'K' or even a Netscape wheel would be better.

Andrew, if you're reading this then please post my third list to the developers list. I would add a bug entry for the rebar menu but it's already a known issue and in the release notes.

As jsnj suggested, somebody probably likes the comical lizard. Yep, I'll raise my hand on this one. I think it's a refreshing change from the overdone, self-important images we see representing... uh... certain other browsers. It suggests that a browser might be developed by people with a sense of humor, and I like the idea.

Problem is the icon is not something that's easily changed as it's a resource within k-meleon.exe. You can change the desktop icon easy enough but not the titlebar and taskbar icon (well at least not that I know of since I'm not a windoze programmer). If I want browser comedy I'll read up on the latest M$ browser flaws and security holes. Anyway I'm more interested in the other issues I mentioned, the icon is a minor annoyance.

asmpgmr,

I hated the lizard icon enough to change it to an icon of the "K" using Resource Hacker. It's pretty easy to use. You can substitute any icon in place of the lizard. It's freeware.

I've posted that to the list. Just to let you know, there are already bugs and RFE's filed on most of these issues here:

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/bugs/

The developers do use that database so if you don't see your particular issue listed there, you should open bugs or RFE's for those.

Here's my latest list, most of these are now in the bugs database.

K-Meleon 0.7 (build 700)
BUG - New windows steal focus during page loading even after you have
switched to another window.
BUG - Image tooltips are displayed too far down.
BUG - Form fields are sometimes lost when returning to a page via back.
BUG - When switching to a window with a loading page it takes a few
seconds before the throbber animation resumes.
BUG - Simultaneous downloads don't work, all download windows show the
same filename and only the first file is downloaded properly.
BUG - Mailto: links cause two mail composer windows to be opened.
RFE - Global history support.
RFE - URL autocompletion.
RFE - View page info support.
RFE - Bookmark keywords support.
RFE - Clear location bar history button in preferences.
RFE - Click on throbber to goto K-Meleon home page or perhaps whatever
kmeleon.general.throbberURL is set to.
ALT - Change default open home page key to Alt-Home to match Mozilla.
ALT - Change Edit->Preferences access key to 'e' to not conflict with
Edit->Paste ('P') and match Mozilla.
ALT - Bookmarks pulldown menu shouldn't have access keys defined for
Config, Add, and Edit, this overrides first letter bookmark
access for C, A, and E.
ALT - Default cache directory shouldn't have 'Cache\' on the end, this
creates K-Meleon\Profiles\default\xxxxxxxx.slt\Cache\Cache
since the preference specifies the cache parent directory.
ALT - Change alternate user agent strings to current versions of
Netscape (4.8 and 7.0) and remove obsolete IE 4.0 entry.
ALT - Consider adding the following pref as a default to prevent the
file xul.mfl from being created:
user_pref("nglayout.debug.disable_xul_fastload", true);
ALT - Better up_directory macro:
$var = dirname($URL);
$var == "." ? "" : open($var);

Will any new work be done on the weasel plugin ? I noticed there is some code for this in the tree on Sourceforge but it hasn't been updated in over a year. That would certainly be a great addition to K-Meleon. Can any code from Mozilla be used for this analogous to what's already done with the browser code ? I know embedded Mozilla only covers the browser component but theoretically couldn't the same thing be done with certain other components as well (keep the core code, replace most of the XUL stuff with win32 UI code) ?

This is minor but please consider replacing that cartoonish green lizard (16x16 for the titlebar and taskbar, 32x32 for the tasklist, and the desktop icon) with the Navigator wheel icons from Mozilla.

There's a response to your list here:

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=1378090&forum_id=2617

Generally, most of them are already filed as bugs or RFE's. I don't think we want to use something that mimics Mozilla/Netscape as our default but that's just my 2 cents.

Andrew,

I just read the response, all of the ALT entries on my list are things which I have done myself and they work fine. My modified up_directory macro checks if you're already in the root dir of a site and won't try to goto "." if you are. Adding user_pref("nglayout.debug.disable_xul_fastload", true); prevents xul.mfl from ever being created, the other debug xul pref doesn't seem to make any difference so forget that one. As for the bug "Form fields are sometimes lost when returning to a page via back", this doesn't seem to happen in Mozilla 1.2 final though it did in Mozilla 1.1 so maybe a new build of K-Meleon with Mozilla 1.2.1 will resolve it. Also I'm now adding stuff to the bugs system.

A question about bookmark keywords - in Ulf's response he said that this can be done now but with the hotlist plugin (Opera) and macros. I couldn't find any info regarding this in the online docs. Also why isn't it implemented in the bookmarks (Netscape/Mozilla) plugin as well ? In Mozilla the keyword in bookmarks.html is SHORTCUTURL= and it usually comes right after LAST_MODIFIED=

I think Ulf is working on getting them into all of the plugins but he wants them tested first. I'm not sure if the change he is referencing is the same one that you noted in Mozilla.
