Chinese in Favorite and Title Bar
Posted by: Chuanhao Chiu
Date: April 02, 2003 02:48AM

I was delighted to see that K-Meleon dispalys Chinese pages so well.
However, Chinese characters show up as question marks on the Favorites menu and the browser window title bar.
Favorite items with Chinese characters don't seem to work, that is, selecting them doesn't open the pages.
Is there any plan for better support?
I'm using the English version of Windows 2000 with service pack 3.

I too was delighted when I saw that K-Meleon displays Japanese
language pages quite well, and furthermore it does the right thing
with Japanese in the title bar and Favorites menu. Bravo!

However, I tried to read a Japanese page that apparently didn't
have a Content-type header. Not too surprisingly, K-M failed, but
never fear, I reached immediately for the character set/encoding
menu to rectify it. Oops. No such menu.

This would be a VERY welcome addition. Couldn't be that hard a
thing to add, if the character set encoding standards are already
supported, no?

Though I can't read a bloomin' word of Chinese (or Japanese, Korean, Thai, Tibetan, Arabic, etc. etc. blah blah), I agree whole-heartedly. smiling smiley

There's a bug open for this issue (bug 226). Now Chuanhao Chiu reports that Chinese characters don't appear correctly in the title bar while Dave reports that Japanese characters do. Both languages require an extended character set and need to use Unicode so they should work (or not work) the same. The same is true for languages such as Hebrew as well. Please reconfirm, if title bar isn't displaying Chinese or Japanese characters correctly then it's a consistent issue and there's a chance that I can fix it in the unofficial build. Based on the source code it shouldn't display any extended character sets correctly in the title bar, only ascii since a conversion is being done using W2T.

One other thing, can you check if the English version of Mozilla displays extended characters correctly in the title bar to make sure it isn't some sort of build issue.

Japanese support in K-M and Mozilla
Posted by: Dave
Date: April 13, 2003 06:37PM

Here's what I've found. I'm running Windows 98J (Japanese), and tested with the latest K-Meleon and Mozilla 1.3 English version. Mozilla displays Japanese correctly in all environments as far as I could tell, including title bar, tab title bar, favorites menu, and on html form widgets (buttons, pulldowns).

K-M displays correctly in the page, title bar, and favorites menu, but not in the layer title. Also, I was not able to test display on form widgets, because the only page I knew offhand that had these doesn't display Japanese correctly in the ordinary page text either, I suspect because there's no Content-type definition.

Hope this helps you debug it!

Since K-Meleon is working correctly for Japanese when run under the Japanese version of w98 then the same should be true for Chinese. While the browser supports Unicode for web page, the title bars, menu bars, and other OS elements really need the corresponding language version of the OS to display properly. Chuanhao Chiu do you have the Chinese version of w2k to test this with ?

I installed a fresh copy of K-Meleon 1.1.5, bone stock. Then tried the two following webpages:

http://udn.com/NEWS/main.html
(Big5 encoding I think)

http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/akiba/hotline/20080621/etc_brain.html
(Shift-JIS?)

Both have no problem with the body of the page itself, but gives me ???'s on the layers and window title.

My Windows XP Pro English has 'Language for non-Unicode programs' set to Chinese(Taiwan), which should map to Big5.

Firefox has no problems with the non-english titles. Is this enough to conclude where the problem lies?

The problem seems wrong info the page or its server gives to K-Meleon.
I do not know whether Big 5 is identical to UTF16 (I doubt it is).

K-Meleon renders title and layers title correct as soon as You set encoding to utf16. I conclude that Your Firefox is set to use/try this encoding by default.
K-Meleon and Firefox use an identical Rendering Engine - a Gecko is a Gecko.
Page encoding poses normally no problem for either browser and utf support has AFAIK been build into K-Meleon core since this thread was started in 2003.

Thanks for your quick reply guenter. Sorry to bug again, but setting to UTF16 doesn't work for me, in fact it breaks the page displayed completely... just array of gibberish without any formatting. I understand your 'a gecko is a gecko' argument too... that's why I wish to fix this problem if possible.

Using this link again (I hope you don't get tired of it)
http://udn.com/NEWS/main.html
(I am quite certain this site uses Big5 encoding exclusively)

I have tried the following:

Firefox 3.0 English stock
Autodetect -> Big5
Force Big5 -> OK
Force UTF16 -> breaks page completely
Force ISO-8859-1 -> gibberish
(Basically, no surprises)

Now, K-Meleon 1.1.5 English stock
Autodetect -> Big5, text OK, but layers and title is ????
Force Big5 -> same as autodetect
Force UTF16 -> breaks page completely
Force ISO-8859-1 -> text gibberish, BUT layers and title OK!!

A surprise. You might remember that I had set Windows non-Unicode programs to display as locale Chinese(Taiwan), which means Big5. So now I set the Windows non-Unicode locale back to English(US).

And try K-Meleon again:
Force Big5 -> text OK, layers and title is ???? (same as before)
Force ISO-8859-1 -> text gibberish, AND layers and title gibberish!!

In summary, to display correctly:
body text -> K-Meleon force to Big5, or autodetect
layers and title -> K-Meleon force to ISO-8859-1, let Windows handle it as if Big5?!

Are the layers/title and the body text following identical codepage<->unicode conversion paths? If they are, did I make a blunder somewhere?

this is a known issue. :p

Bug 226 was not fixed until K-Meleon 1.5. I suppose to try the latest beta...

I am new to this unicode/utf8 language concept. I have KM 1.5beta2 running in the U.S. with English Win XP SP3. Does a user have to have the OS in the language of the website in order to get the window title and tab title to be displayed correct?

While the browser supports Unicode for web page, the title bars, menu bars, and other OS elements really need the corresponding language version of the OS to display properly.

I am seeing some window titles and tab titles but not others.

From this site http://www.php.org.il/ I have a mix of non-display and English for the window title, and Hebrew is displayed for the tab title.

From this site http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/akiba/hotline/20080621/etc_brain.html I have non-display in both window title and tab title. The page never finished loading. I gave it 4 minutes and I have a fast connection. Two single non-display characters appeared in this document.

From this site http://udn.com/NEWS/main.html I have non-display in both window title and tab title.

I hope this is useful.

For all the url you give, titles and buttons are displayed with unicode characteres, instead of 1.1.x where they are displayed with ????

So, for me, 1.5 is ok (I tried with 1.5b2, and there is no reason to have a regression with 1.5.0 RC)

But, I agree, it's not ok with Bookmarks and Favorites kplugins. It's a bug

Hi guys,

I am using the portable version (1.5.0) and really love it.
But found that the Chinese characters
were still displayed as question marks on the Bookmark bar.
Though that on the title bar were correct.

I tried to add the site below to my bookmark bar
http://www.baidu.com/
But one of the Chinese character turned into a question mark.

I also found the bug 226 were closed.

Hope you can fix this.

BTW,I am using JAPANESE Windows XP SP3.

Best regards
