Tabs

Tabs are going to eventually be worked into KM, right? This whole layer business is just temporary? If so, is work being done on this, or is it something that will be worked on eventually. Are there any windows browsers with native tabs?
Maybe we can get a pool of money going to encourage someone to make a tabs plugin.

What features do you miss that layers don't provide?

Hmm... I don't miss tabs at all. In fact, I went into the Prefs.js and changed "Layers" to "Tabs" and now even I don't know the difference. hehe! I can open my links in new "tabs", close them with a middle click, etc, etc. The two things I can't do is re-arrange them or click on the "tabs" bar to make one open---but it's like that in some other browsers and skins as well. Do I miss it? Not in the least. I don't open more than 4 or 5 anyway and that's usually at scientific sites when I'm looking at images that are enlarged from the page, or following further reading material on that specific subject.
Oh well, as we say, "Chacun àson goût!" (To each his own!) And I guess the way it works now is just "my own" that satisfies me well enough.

Feature I miss:
- Double clicking on tab bar opens a new tab
- Rearranging tabs
- The tab look - aesthetics are important, in my opinion.
Annoyances created by layers:
- Task bar item disappears and reappears every time I switch layers - very annoying, especially when the taskbar button keeps umping around to different locations because of this.
- Customization are not carried over to new layer - because each layer is a different KM window, if you decide to more or remove a toolbar when in one layer, your other layers will not reflect those changes. This looks very very weird.
I've been using foobar2000's tabs and it allows for double-click support on the tab bar and for rearragment of tabs. Sure, it's not a browser, but it's still native tabs. It acts and looks a heck of a lot better than layers

Dragging a link to the tabbar and having it open in a new tab, or draggin a link over a tab and having it open in that tab, is also a desired feature. I see behavior like this in foobar2000's tabs too.
Again, I know foobar is a media player, not a browser, but taking a look at it may provide insight as to how to implement tabs in KM. Or not.

Another layer annoyance:
When loading a site in a background tab, it steals focus and temporarily flashes over whatever you're looking at. This has got to be one of the most annoying things ever.

- Double clicking on tab bar opens a new tab
There is no double-click, left-click or right-click functionality in any of the toolbars, only for the buttons on toolbars. Seems more of an overall K-Meleon feature request.
Rearranging tabs. Dragging a link to the tabbar and having it open in a new tab, or draggin a link over a tab
There is no drag & drop support in K-Meleon period. Again, an overall feature request. Not layer specific. Once drag & drop support is added to K-Meleon (if ever) it probably won't be hard to add it to the layer bar.
The tab look - aesthetics are important
I happen to like the pressed asterisk look (style-10). I prefer that to the default of Firefox, Mozilla, MYIE2 & Avant.
When loading a site in a background tab, it steals focus and temporarily flashes over whatever you're looking at. This has got to be one of the most annoying things ever.
This hardly ever happens to me. Whenever I open K-Meleon, I open groups. There's hardly ever any flashing happening with the layers opening in the background. Same with opening links in the background, there's hardly ever any flashing. If it did constantly I wouldn't be able to use the browser. I'm not sure why it constantly happens with you. Maybe it has to do with certain types of pages? As for the taskbar behavior, mine is on autohide, so that's not an issue for me. One thing the layer bar allows that other browsers which use tabs don't is the ability to place the layer bar on the same level as the toolbar & url bar, thus providing more room for the webpage. That's how I have mine setup. I don't wanna lose that ability.

Well, I agree with banjobacon that Layers is imperfect. jsnj, you might also recall that Ulf initially designed it as a workaround to the Tabs feature present in Phoenix (or Opera?). IIRC, MonkeeSage-or-someone-else implemented a real Tabs feature, but -- I don't remember why -- it wasn't popular.
I am annoyed at the fact that toolbars arrangement does not affect other layers, and also at that taskbar position moving problem.

Monkeesage created a version that had the tabs feature, but it was just in early development. It wasn't unpopular, it just hadn't been fully developed yet so it wasn't a sufficient substitue at the time, but if I recall correctly some were disappointed the development stopped. What was good about it was that it didn't prevent the layers plugin from being used, so users had a choice to use either one or both.

I actually like the layers better!

If anyone's taken a close look at some of the Firefox themes they'd see that they're very much trying to imitate the look of layers in some aspects (the square look detached from the browsing window, etc.). I find that rather "interesting".
And why do I have to "drag 'n drop" to a tabbar? That's wasted wrist movement (and I don't have much left in way of wrists). I take the "lazy man's way out" and click with my middle mouse button (or scrollwheel) on the link and it does a better job. It'll even open the link in the background if I so choose so that I can keep right on reading the main page and look at the second page when I'm finished.
I could go on but this is just my 2½¢ worth.

EyesOnly - Dragging and dropping to the task bar is useful for links outside the browsing window. We should also be able to drag images to the tabbar and have the image open up in a new tab, as well as drag an HTML file from your computer to the tabbar and have that open in a new tab.
It's about better control! The way I see it, layers control how you browse, not the other way around. Too damn limiting, but maybe they're just underdeveloped.

The flashing is always present in the layers. Changing the toolbars does only affect one layer. And almost every Mozilla-based browser uses ctrl-click and middle-click to open new tabs. I'm used to ctrl-click, but when I do that in KM, it just sits there.
I'm interested in ME having control. If I wanted someone else to control what I can do, I'd be using AOL or IE.

Not for me. Maybe it happens more regularly on dialup? I don't know because I'm on broadband.
And almost every Mozilla-based browser uses ctrl-click and middle-click to open new tabs.
So does KM. I have no idea why that's not working for you. Double-check that your accelerators file contains CTRL LButton = layers(OpenLink). It's there by default.

I believe this can be done by recording the last closed URL, and giving the option to reopen it (like a session macro, but the 'session' is recorded when a layer is closed).
Hey, this will be a good addition to the Macros Library!

There is a version of this feature included with the
Groups macros called "Open Last Closed". It was added in March. It will save all pages you've closed until you reload/refresh a page or load a new page.

I should've said "It will open all pages you've closed"

Oh, I see. I've never really studied your Groups macro, but I guess I should; it seems to have many cool features. :-)

howdy all,
@rmn,

)) - i di not find it by myslf either - it is powerfull & should go into next k-m!
about: dragging: As Eyes-Only seems to imply many users are still not all are using it much. i do not use it with any windows program - started to have pc when we did not drag but used F5 of NC or other commands to do things.
But perhaps we could ask devs to have that rudimentary real tabs of Jordan?
If it did not have bugs & nicely coexisted with other possibilties of k-m - as addition?
best regards

jsnj: Do you know where I can find the sourcecode for Jordan's tab build? Just want to dig it out.

I'm not sure if the source was ever posted for that. I may have a copy of the exe somewhere on a disc but not the source. I'm pretty sure Jordan doesn't have it on his site. If I remember correctly, Ulf clued Jordan in on how or where to find the code for that. You may want to get in touch with Ulf on the dev list, he may know where to lead you.

Thanks. I have the .exe also but it does not work with the current version. I will try to contact with Ulf about that.
