SearchBar

Hi! I wish that there was an searchbar in K-M with some searchengines to choose between for exampel Altavista and Lycos plus Hotbot and some other engines too.
This is not to much to wish for or what do other users of this browser say?

There is also a macro which does what you want.

No searchbar, but a box where you can give where you want to search and what you want to search.

Is there really a need to have a new toolbar which take a little place more ?

It's an often requested feature because people have gotten used to it migrating from Firefox and other IE based alternative browsers. It's very user-friendly in that it's akin to a big sign which reads "SEARCH HERE". But in reality theQuickSearch method is expedentially more efficient since it requires less mouse clicks and/or typing since there's no need to scroll through a list of search engines in a search box which takes up more browser space. But there's no harm in creating the plugin since so many may appreciate it.

I believe Romanito is working on the plugin.

Yes, Romanito is and the only drawback to it being finished, from what I seem to understand, is that you can't press the "enter" key and nobody seems to have any idea why. He's posted it either in bugs or here. I can't remember. sad smiley

Everyone,

The idea of a SearchBar is a good one. It would help KM match up with FIreFox's Search dialog box on the main navigation toolbar and with Mozilla F9 Sidebar search engine.

Personally I use <dogpile> on the main URL and with <Ctrl G> as the popup Google. I also use the QuickNick Search options in Bookmarks and so happy with that there that I only use KM's bookmarks for QuickNick Searchs. (I use a hotkey to invoke GUL as an external bookmark manager and another more robust program to manage that file, but not run it as I had yet to find anything as easy as GUL to actually click on Bookmark.html url entires.

He's posted it in the forums and the development mailing list. Dunno about the bugs...

That's right, I've been programming a search bar plugin, and indeed I'm stuck with a strange bug which prevents the plugin from catching the "Enter" keypresses. It's quite frustrating as the plugin works fine (goggle search only for the moment) but with another key to execute the search. I use the F12 key for testing purposes but it's only a workaround and it's not intuitive.

I'll keep you informed if I find out how to fix this bug, but I'm running out of ideas... I don't know exactly how K-Meleon deals with keystrokes but maybe we'll have to change some code. I now have access to the K-Meleon core code but I still have to build a test environment on my computer.

Good news, I found a workaround for my "Enter key bug". The first version of the Search Bar Plugin can be downloaded on my site.

As usual, early version, far from finished, untested, etc smiling smiley

Just tested it and it works as described in your readme file. Users of Startup Groups\Continue from last session feature will notice the bug you mentioned because it relies on setting KM to start with a blank page so that the startup group doesn't override the URL if KM is opened by an external app such as a mail client .

I noticed that if a Startup Group is used, the searchbar will only work on the last layer on the right and any additional layers opened after that, but never in any of the other layers opened by the Startup Group macro even if new urls are loaded in them. I'm curious to the workaround. Maybe I can learn something :-)

Good to know this, am I late? hehe.
I've posted a Combined Go&Search macro in General division of this forum. Hope it partially meets the need.

Romanito,

Great work on your Google Bar my friend!! I love it! Now my URLbar is set for Dogpile on the enter key, Yahoo by macro and then I've got the Google Bar. I'm all set now.

Hmm... add our Kute theme and I've got something that looks like Firefox---but is way speedier and lighter than Firefox. Does it get any better than this? Is this much fun legal? lol!

Thanks for all of your very hard work on all of these great plugins Romanito! The work---and the plugins!---are so very much appreciated! Also good to see that you were able to work around that "Enter" key bug. Congratulations! Someone should hand you a six pack of Guinness for that one!

À bientôt mon ami!

Some points:

1) works in layers handly opened

2) don't works in layers launched in groups

3) a button equal to enter will be nice

4) an history list also with a button to clear it

5) Possibility to configure :
- the search address
- history list manager
- choice to open in the same/new layer/window
- ..

. as others kplugins.

Nice to see someone working on a real searchbar for k-m.

I made a little googlebar with macros sometime ago, it gets you the buttons and a dropdown menu from the highlighted text submenu. It's also possible to add it to the main menu.

You can of course extend it to other search engines, if you do, searching for the same words on multiple search engines becomes very easy, as your query is stored on a special search clipboard.

You can find it at: http://home.hetnet.nl/~mjm189/

thx for info and work Michel.
I much apreciate Romanitos work.
I like his whole site: he has pictures and all sorts of good things.

but your macro is a good tool too!
it does not matter how, success counts.

And what I like about yours Michel is the fact that I can use more than just the "I feel lucky", see? If I want to search for an image then I can enter into the URLbar and press the icon for image, etc.

Hmm... I don't have it installed at the moment and I can't recall why now. But when I did I thought it a marvelous tool as well. Anything to advance K-Meleon = Good Deal. winking smiley

À bientôt!

Absolutely nice. I love your macro setup for Google. It was all I needed. I think It should be added to macro collection on this site.

Good work

Eyes-Only,

I see you're still using the dogpile macro for the main URL bar. <g>

How did you set up the Google Bar? To replace the <Ctrl G> method?

As for Kute, well there's no accounting for taste.

Hi ndebord!

Yeah, I use Dogpile from... oh what is it? The "Keywords Macro"? Just enter a word into URLbar and press "enter" and it searches Dogpile. Then I had a toolbar URL search for Google as you've seen in my themes so it looks more like Mozilla/Firefox. I never cared for the popup box from the iconbar/menubar. Then when I installed Romanito's Googlebar I set it up to look something like the Firefox Googlebar. winking smiley When I did that I changed my toolbar search button over to Yahoo. I never knew about Ctrl+G as I seldom ever use keyboard shortcuts. My hands shake too much and knowing me I'd more than likely make a mistake and close my OS down. hehe!

What I meant by reference to the Kute theme was that where this is the default theme in Firefox if one used that in KM and had the Googlebar with a quick glance at the screen they would think they are looking at Firefox. winking smiley I wasn't too clear on that because I was really excited about the bar where I'd just installed it. I do occasionally use it, however, if I switch my T-Bird and Mozilla to it just for something "different". Someday I'd like to do a private port of "iCandy Junior" for my own use so when I'm in that mood I can have everything switched to that. winking smiley

Usually though I use my friend's, CatThief, "Mostly Crystal" theme in all the other builds and use an amended form of Rapido's (I think he's the one who did it?) "Crystal" theme. NICE!!! In fact, for my last Aston Shell theme I "borrowed" a couple of icons to incorporate into the shell. hehe. I rarely use anything else in KM, and almost never one of my own themes. LOL! grinning smiley (Well, KM-Nautipolis is perhaps my favourite.)

I'm anxious to see just where Romanito is going to go with the Searchbar plugin---and it'll be interesting to see if these plugins that he's made will become standard parts of KM v0.9. We really live in interesting times!

À la procchaine!

Eyes-Only,

KM has become much more interesting, not the least reason why is because of the plethora of themes now available. I mean, you'd have to drag me kicking and screaming to give up my Early Blue, but then beauty is in the eye of the beholder, no?

Right now I have DogPile via that macro you and I use working as the search engine on the main URL. I dragged Romanito's searchbar onto the main toolbar, so I have two search engines readily available and all on the main toolbar!

One strange thing. I tried to change over the <Ctrl G> search dialog box from Google to Yahoo, but for some odd reason it still uses the Google search engine instead. (Go Figure.) I still have several QuickNick searchs in bookmarks and that works just fine for me as I don't use KM's built-in bookmark manager for serious work. I use GUL for browsing and Columbine BookMerge as my backup.

You're certainly right about Romanito's excellent work I hope his DLLs become part of the default KM distribution.

any chance this "http://www.viewpoint.com/pub/toolbar/download.html"; could be supported? it looks like a nice little search engine, praps just add support for the plugins dir or isnt it as easy as that?...i think support from within this plugin should be used on all search engines meaning a search engine in one viewpoint->altavista,google,yahoo,excite,ask, etc.. it would be great.

Im not a code so please if i sound stupid in askin this dont shout at me lol. im more a graphics type of person and wouldnt mind helping out on skinning this browser, its a fast browser and looks quite compact.

my requests: apart from the search,

are there options to change the fonts for the toolbars, edit the toolbars with a right click instead of having to click the top "hotlist" "favourites" etc..

the browser does need a little more added to it, praps a an mp3 player as an addon. im sorry if im jumpin to conclusions or jumping on things that cannot happen

Howdy all,

Dan, did You or anyone consider search plugin from Romanitos site. it is nice already he we add more to it - he said in docu!

mp3 player, did You look in menus.cfg?

winamp support is actually hidden most skins because the man who started k-m is in their programing team.
it was one of the first things added. You must only get a win amp plugin winking smiley the dll that goes into plugin directory.

hi rmn, You are right about dll.

but the standart menus still contain reference to it (i think)

& afaik it is also possible to use Jordans menus with standart k-m,
just like a theme - Jordan also made themes which probably contain this feature...

(it was also part in older k-m standart issues - i think.)
