How about adopting the "Find Bar" feature from firefox, its much better the a disabling dialog box that blocks all browsing while you use it...

There was a plugin for this (not sure if it still works with 0.9beta), but it hasn't been popular, mainly because of the "bookmarks nickname" (or something...) feature that is already present.
For example, create a bookmark with the URL
]http://www.google.com/search?q=%s and Nick
g (see Bookmarks -> Edit). Now you can search in Google by entering
g your search query .

I believe clowne was referring to the new Find Bar(not web search bar) that displays at the bottom of FF when you search the page. It's basically just 'Find As You Type' with a more graphical UI.
Romanito's search plugin is what I believe RMN was referring to. That didn't get out of early development so it didn't get to the point where you could add new engines. That's why it didn't catch on. However it's really not needed now since the macro search allows you to use the URL Bar as the search bar and you can switch search engines from the button's right-click menu. And there's always Quicksearch that RMN also mentioned. :-)

I was refering to the new find bar that appears at the bottom of the screen when you ctrl+f in firefox 1.0PR. Its a very sleek minimalistic solution that will integrate nicely to the k-meleon look and feel...

jsnj,
the problem is: we were not able to get things going that were working once.
so we can not take over FF things.
& best weekend to all

In reference to XUL features, yes, that's true. The only other thing that I can think of that doesn't work in the beta that works in 0.8.2 is the macro trick of automatically giving focus to the URL Bar when new blank pages are opened.

jsnj,
Thanks for calling attention to the new search engine editing method. Really nice way. It really answers a longstanding issue with K-Meleon, which was the complaint about having to manually edit all the various config files.
I've been so conditioned to doing it all manually in Notepad, that I failed to appreciate what great strides KM has undergone in this department. Lots of places now where editing has been made easier, more convenient by virtue of being there in the Main Menu and full-featured, by offering some of the most wanted options in an easily used format, such as adding search engines!

Well you still have to copy & paste into macros & menus to add engines :-), but you only have to add an engine once in one place in the files for it to be utilized throughout the browser. In previous KM versions the search engines & methods weren't related, so configuration was more of a hassle, especially switching default engines or opening the results in a new layer/window. So it's a step in the right direction I think.

jsnj,
Yes, it is still cut and paste, but much imnproved cut and paste. With the proper FAQ webpage open and notepad opened automatically to the proper menu and macro config files, it is easy enough to add in search engines. Much, much better than before in any event. As you say, a step in the right direction!

i think most of us want that freedom to add a little -
and not totally closed things like others have.
and though i much regret that we can not utilize FF extensions at the moment
i also much like the out of the box features of k-m. thx jsnj.
we are still in beta phase: so maybe we will get extension support and installer?
or perhaps a build that is faster?

guenter,
I installed the M-Types extension (from wb) and, as far as I can see now,
it works, so there is at least some support for extensions.
Of course there is, it's Mozilla isn't it

.
Michel.

Michel - thx for info. You tried with 0.9.b2? and the newest chrome?
it was a bug in the previous exe then?
that is great news!
Or did You have to alter the xul code?
(i remember that You are very good in altering xul)
w-b.0.8.2+ has a xul code that can drive a full mozilla.exe browser.
the k-m.0.9 has chrome that does not support all so well.
would You think it is worth while to try to get an extension installer going so that
people can try to install extensions? Naturally not all extension will work but...
& greetings to beautiful Holland

Hi Michel,
Are you sure it is working?
I can install the mimetype-editor here, but when you press the edit-button of the mimetype-editor, when selected a mimetype, the edit-field are staying clear.
Or, in other words, I can install the mimetypes-editor, but editing existing mimetypes is not possible.

Oops, you are right, I was a little too fast, obviously some files are missing from the chrome.
The js console shows errors like:
Error: nsIMIMEInfo has no properties
Source File: chrome://mtypes/content/pref/pref-applications-edit.xul
Line: 41
It may be possible to include them in the extension.
Michel.

I think it is no chrome-problem because it is working with WB, but using the WB-chrome or the complete 1.7.4 chrome with the extension is not working either.

oh schiete;
glad i looked here before started with finding and trying to get to work installer.
Michel You can use chromes with other applications.
the 1.7.4 that Jan made has fault in bookmark and Mozilla preferences dialogue
(which k-m are not using - all the rest works usually) so You could test with
corresponding Mozilla.
by the way - I made the same hasty conclusion - that works: a couple of months ago too - when i build it into a standart 0.8.2 and assumed it works.
greetings to beautiful Holland
p.s.
the w-b chrome is even more complete (thx to Jans and Your work) but slightly bigger
it drives the complete mozilla browser part.
Jan i had no success making an iso of slimmed xp install with nlite.
i will try with Barts PE next. regards

does anyone know what this kind of message indicates?
first type:
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Could not convert JavaScript argument (NULL value cannot be used for a C++ reference type) arg 0 [nsISupports.QueryInterface]" nsresult: "0x8057000b (NS_ERROR_XPC_BAD_CONVERT_JS_NULL_REF)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://googlebar/content/googlebarOverlay.js :: <TOP_LEVEL> :: line 63" data: no]
another type:
Error: lastResults has no properties
Source File: chrome://googlebar/content/googlebarOverlay.js
Line: 645
that is the error type that i get from a installed xul object that partially works with
0.9 // the xul object is called Google Bar.

the one where classic.jar has 03.10. 04 as date and is 154.078 as size.
that is the latest i think?
if You think it is xul
i can again transfer installed chrome to a mozilla made for the purpose of testing that chrome - but i do not think so.
only bookmarks and mozilla prefs interface has been smalled out by You.
I tested already.what You have smalled out.

Jan, idea.
send me unsmalled chrome for test. (my arm is getting better & i adventurous again)
if that chrome makes excuses it is exe or other c++.
(or else fault inside xul of googlebar.)
if that does not make excuse
- we can search in smalled chrome or try to add code to extension?
actually i hoped that some one knew - what the faults mean. but...
