Filterset.G -- Yet another Ad-block question

Summary: I want to use Filterset.G, http://www.geocities.com/pierceive/adblock/
for adblocking within kmeleon. Can such lists be used in any way?

Good day all,

Using a slow connection, I prefer blocking *without downloading* (using a "PAC"-file I guess?) before fiddling with userContent.css which only hides downloaded content (right?). Currently using Privoxy, which works reasonably well.

However, the vivid Firefox/Adblock community is creating filter-lists that I would want to use. The most prominent one would perhaps be the excellent "Filterset.G" -- see http://www.geocities.com/pierceive/adblock/ . Take a look at one of those filters! Please note that there is a somewhat restrictive license regarding redistribution.

Within Firefox, such a Filterset is imported/converted into *one* huge entry in the "prefs.js"-file -- user_pref("adblock.patterns", "........");

Any ideas on how to be able to use this stuff within kmeleon? Somehow (at "import-time") converting into a PAC-file (or some corresponding JavaScript-code) maybe? I guess it should be done run-time (or at "import-time") -- we can't "manually" convert such a file to a PAC-file and redistribute it, due to the license.

Regards
Hugo

The following post from Drahken is interesting. It looks like it shouldn't be *too* difficult to write code to read a "Firefox/Adblock-filterset"-file and use it within kmeleon in some PAC-manner.

A Perl script for converting the FilterSet.G adblock files to PAC files:

You don't have to redistribute the converted PAC file. I think it should be okay if you just convert it and use it on your own.

Thanks a lot rstlne, excellent!

Yes, that should be ok license-wise. I was thinking of writing some Adblock-extension for everybody to use, but this will certainly do very well for now.

rstlne/hugo.

Can one of you explain how to set that up in "K-Meleon for Idiots" terms? I've read the Perl script conversion page, plus the other threads on here and on the Adblock forum concerning this, and it's all beyond my understanding. Thanks.

Well, unfortunately there still is no simple solution as far as I know.. To use the Perl conversion script you would have to download and install an interpreter for the Perl scripting language.. which might be a little tricky maybe. ("Active Perl" would be a good Google search for that)

Hmm.. other ideas anyone?

We should really try to write a little port of Adblock for K-Meleon. (Anybody? Maybe me? Hmm..)

The Filterset.G is currently unavailable, see http://aasted.org/adblock/viewtopic.php?t=2120

We'll see if it ever comes back up again.

Thanks Hugo. The impression I had was some folks had incorporated G's filter into KM, but I couldn't understand how exactly.

G has put the latest version up on on another site temporarily. See the above link.
