If K-Meleon would put in the Add-Ons like Firefox has,...
then K-Meleon would also inherit that what You do not like with Firefox.
The XUL user interface that is the father of the Firefox extension system makes for example that Firefox has a slow start...
The Firefox User Interface & XUL extensions often use Java Script for their functionality. Java Script is not compiled but interpreted at runtime...
p.s. You can test some of that Yourself. Rename K-Meleons chrome folder copy the chrome folder of a firefox with the same GRE to the K-Meleon directory and start K-Meleon.
Interpreting User Interface and Extensions Java Script at runtime consumes 5+% of Firefox' speed with JavaScript execution. So when You compare identical GRE versions running for K-Meleon & Firefox there must be this difference. You can test some of that Yourself when You place K-Meleon 1.6 core components inside a Firefox 3+ Folder and run a Java Script Benchmarks (1st with Firefox and then with K-Meleon exe from the same folder / this works for older non static Firefox builds also).
The start-up is noticeably slower. That is why for each new major K-Meleon version a user and a dev bite the bullet & look what can be done to diminish chrome size.
