Another huge step forward for KM, great! smiling smiley smiling smiley smiling smiley
Couldn't test yet (others can do that much better anyway) but updated the language versions of the Home/News page.

The Release Notes and changelog are interesting, just wondering if perhaps the easier adaption of addons might be worth mentioning too, just a thought.

I think that protection against losing cookies/history/sessions when its forced to close because of a crash, etc. should be added to it.

gordon451,

MIME types are available through about:preferences page ('Applications' tab)

I have just noticed that when a 24 is selected for toolbar size in preferences, the 24 is not reported back after a restart. The images are the correct size, it is just that the display of toolbar size in preferences reverts back to zero.

I would never have known this except I was helping someone with a AuraAlpha skin and it is 24 size.

I noticed a mis-match between the info in Preferences and the corresponding item in about:preferences. In Preferences > Page Display > Content Filters I have 'Enable CSS Add-Blocking' checked. However in about:preferences > Content the same item is not checked.

gordon451,

applications could be added only with OS own ways - KM reads the mimetypes.rdf file in profile folder, which is based on system information about file and protocol associations.

You can edit RDF-file directly in text editor.

Another alternative is to use RJVmimeedit extension.

Read this thread (to the end) and try set it by yourself.

I've described different ways of handling this task there.

AFAIK The Firefox JS code now accessible via about:preferences, which was also used & functional in K-Meleon Prefs Panel until 74, reads out the Windows system's file associations. So if Windows has no association to a program that can do the job or does not know a file type it does not work.

So it uses a Windows function but can not effect anything when that does not work.

As rodocop pointed out the whole mechanism can be overruled by mimetypes.rtf. This file can be edited manually or by the extension mentioned. Both is not so easy but it can even add types unknown to the Windows registry, paths to programs that are not installed yet et cetera pp.

Means the later can replace a Windows function when that function does not work.

There must be some mess in chrome, because i use only core files from official version in my km and everything works perfectly.
I use last updates (updates before the last two full packages), and this is the most stable core so far. My os is win7 64bit.
Edit:
I have made small changes and just have tested my addons (my addons expect a notification when installing which does not exist in the official version), and i do not see problems there.
Also, i have tested km on the virtual xp machine, addons are installed and working fine without crashing, but it seems km does not start after clicking on the restart in addons manager (xp only).
Very sorry,it's my fault! smiling smiley
As you said,I used the old omni.ja files altered by myself from the previous version.I have made a fresh install, proved that there's no problem, except the restart function you mentioned (XP SP3).

G'day guenter - it does seem to me that maybe the whole MimeTypes thing should be part of the K-M package. Nothing wrong with learning to be a geek, but many folks don't have that ability and give up when some file cannot be rendered from the browser.

I've never been a FF fan, and this type of thing fails to win me over. OTOH, Microsoft is no angel: anybody who's tried to make a file/protocol association in W7 can witness!

NO IMHO it is redundant. I say this even with my nostalgia and bias towards it. It is one of if not THE oldest chrome extensions usable for K-Meleon. And the first that had a version only for K-Meleon. But that is history.

It was a must have once when its original JS code was created by Ben Goodger for Mozilla suite and adapted for K-Meleon and Firefox first by Jordan Callicoat.
And that is why I readapted it for K-Meleon only with then brand-new Mozilla 1.7 code.

But then the MS failure started to happen so rarely and the K-Meleon's own mimetypes editor was used so rarely that during the 1.5.ns some people realized that nobody had used it for ages.

Now. It is a waste of download time for most people. And since we can add FF Type addons that are compatible to K-Meleon now. IMHO we can go without adding it to each download of the basic K-Meleon package.

Guenter,

If websites were all giving types for files, it should not be a problem, and the first example I think of is 7z files where we must precise to download it instead of open it when clicking on such links (K-meleon 7z files wer in this case).

But it's not the case, and a bit ennoying, but another reason of the necessity of rvjmtypes, and you know it, is the use under Linux, to allow to open links correctly.

I have not too much time to test it now with the official Km 75, and I didn't really test it and other problems under Linux since a few versions, but I'll do it, and hope this always works with K-Meleon.

Have a good day.

Yes I know and I kept rvjmimeedit updated and usable ever since disrupted found it.

Thanks and best wishes to him and the original creators of the extension.

p.s. You can add any Linux changes You want - it is just as free as my mimetypes version which we two once altered and improved together with kko.

A bug with downloads and related to these ask or directly save files preferences.

Preferences involved:

browser.download.useDownloadDir

and

browser.download.dir

K-meleon fallbacks always to save directly to My Documents\Downloads.

Doesn't happen when set asking in preference panel (useDownloadDir false or default).

Greetings:

Would someone here be kind enough to explain how to turn the "charset guesser"
on and off in the new K-Meleon 75, please.
Maybe there is a way to delete the whole "feature" or module?

What I had added in prefs.js in a user_pref line, to turn off:
("intl.charset.detector", ""), but not sure that this changes anything.

Greetings, guenter,

Thanks for the quick reply.

"Menu item: View - Encoding - Autodetect - OFF"
-- The "Auto" is checked with me, too, initially.

"Default character encoding: F2 - tab Languages - the bottom selector"

-- The "selector" seems to generate a line in the file prefs.js
like this:
user_pref("intl.charset.default", "iso-8859-1");

I don't know what else this clickable control achieves.
If I understand correctly, "intl.charset.default" is a weak command
to the browser to display the incoming text or existing file, let
us say, in charset iso-8859-1, instead of in another codepage, and ONLY
if there is not a stronger instruction from somewhere else (e. g. a http
header), which would then override it. The "intl.charset.default" has
little or nothing to do with the charset detector (guesser), I think.

"... docu below?
Outdated docu:
http://www-archive.mozilla.org/projects/intl/chardet.html";

-- Thank you for bringing it up, I did not see this page before,
but, honestly I don't understand it, so I'll keep reading it and try
to figure it out more. I would like to find them (the dlls) and delete
them to see if K-Meleon will work just as well without them -- as an
experiment, if nothing else.

Let me explain what I am trying to do.

Some WWW pages and articles are presented (delivered) correctly, but some
are anomalous:

https://msuweb.montclair.edu/~furrg/

Here is an example of an HTML page I was reading and would like to print.
Besides being good and informative about 20th century history, it has a small
number of words in Vietnamese, German and Spanish. If I understand this part
correctly, the page itself is properly encoded in iso-8859-1, and should
display properly in any browser, except that it is sent out by the Apache
with a header

text/html; charset=UTF-8

which is wrong, and which causes K-Meleon to show a "?" instead of the
correct letter. I would like to force a change to the correct 8859-1 letter
by clicking an item on the menu. But first I would want to keep the charset
detector, if on (how can I be certain?) from interfering with a wrong guess.
Perhaps this is possible and maybe even easy to do, but I've got it right
with K-Meleon only once, and cannot repeat the experiment. This is where
I am now.

It's in menu View>Encoding, and 8859-1 is already in the top menu. A hundred more variations are in the submenus.

PS: This menu is created by a macro, "encoding.kmm". If you or anyone needs to switch to one of the hundred other codes often, their lines can be copied into the top menu too: by opening the kmm with an editor like notepad, scroll down to the setmenu-block, and copy&paste the needed encoding lines a bit higher next to the desired neighbors ;-) And exchange $__b with $__e, it should just look exactly like the neighbor lines except for the other encoding type.
Then save again with "all files" option to keep the .kmm ending, and restart the browser.
Ah yes, and always a good idea to make a backup copy first, named ..._kmm
