they claim FF won't be another Chrome-clone. ;-)
Re: K-Meleon 76 RC

Big thanks to Dorian, I've been waiting too long!
Anyway, just installed it, but something odd... I first tried unwrapping the 7z file into a folder in Program Files (x86), then dragging a shortcut to All Users. But KM wouldn't work, nothing at all happened. So I dropped it into Dependency Walker, and that showed me several bits (apparently) missing, see:
and
Is there something I should know about?
Anyway, I then used the Installer, and 76RC seems (ATM) to work extremely well
I even got rid of the black page!!!! If all continues well, I'll replace 75.0 soon
Gordon.

Re: 7z archive missing files?

Do we have hashes for the install files? I used Hash Generator from SecurityXploded which gives:
MD5:de40726522af29e26d05716b044a9960
SHA256:b52b8676a708d239dd0e2c5a0d0df3aaa40c250c3d0a9a8f909c14f7a32122d3
on the 7z archive.
And while we're here, the Black Page seems occur only on these forum pages :s
Gordon.

@gordon451
Your 7z archive MD5 is fine. It's the same as mine.
Program Files (x86) is protected area. If you want your K-Meleon folder there, IMO best practice is to use the installer.
You can try to extract the archive to a non protected area as a test. It should work.
Make sure to use a newer version of the 7z archiver. BTW, you can download the newest one which fixes a security hole.

Hi Yogi - thanks. Yes, I'm familiar with M$ "security" overkill in W7, I'm still grieving for W2K. It was most certainly a permissions stuffup if the archive was intact.
I upgraded my PeaZip as soon as I heard about the 7z vulnerability, I was using PZ5.5 which was working quite well, using 7z9.22B, definitely not affected by whatever hit 7z15.x.
Gordon.

The other thing, although trivial, is that the browser's background color is black during the very short interval before a page has loaded. I also notice this on startup. It used to be white. However, blank pages (about:blank) do come up white, as expected.
Hi foliator, you can set
layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled to
false in
about:config. But as Dorian said, this may reduce performance.
I thought I had solved the black problem, but no... Look at
Off-main-thread compositing on Linux, and
Bug 1083071 - After upgrading to Firefox 33, window is BLACK at startup with OMTC enabled. It seems to be related to video drivers.
I think I can live with this bug, most sites load quite quickly, this forum is an exception

Re: K-Meleon 76 RC

Setting layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled to false completely cured the black window problem for me and actually sped up the browser a bit compared with KM75. The most recent version of FF I've used is 43, and there the OMTC setting made no difference at all, but there were no black screens, either. Also, I've experimented with enabling and disabling hardware acceleration in all the versions I've used, both in KM and in FF, but never noticed any difference in performance. BTW, I've never seen poor response on this forum, aside from rather frequent server slowdowns that sometimes produce a "guru meditation" message from the server.
Now, the only issue I have with KM76rc is that the menu icons, while they show up in the main and compact menus, are missing from the context menus. Instead, the items there that are missing their icons have their text slightly left-indented. KM75, however, behaves normally.
Another odd thing in 76rc is that after a restart, the checkbox for menu icons is
always unchecked, whether I've enabled them or not. So if they are enabled and I want to
disable them, believe it or not, I have to check that box! That takes effect immediately. The checkmark is cleared after a restart, but the setting is still in effect. :s

@hermes - thanks for the zeus software link
@foliator - I think the problem may possibly be in the GPU. I'm using the Onboard Graphics Processor in my Core i5, and that could well be one of the Intel processors mentioned in the Bugzilla link, I didn't follow it through. I suppose I should check for driver updates  I've never used FF since taking an immense dislike to it back in the v1.x days ¬_¬
Surprise... All my menus do have the appropriate icons, and I've just noticed that Appearance>General>Display Menu Icons is not checked, but I use the Klassic skin. I'll play with that checkbox later, it may have something to do with your restarted unchecked checkbox.
Gordon.

What did you use instead? I never tried FF until version 15. It was at least better than IE9, which I had been using, but FF was already a memory hog even that far back. What attracted me to it, however, was the customizability. My very first browser was Netscape on Windows 3.1. That was pretty heavy, too, even when I installed it on a faster machine with Win98.
I've never used any of the KM versions earlier than 74.

I'm using the default skin here.

I've used Opera (just semi-retired v12.17 due to age and inability to handle modern web-tech), Iron (pre-Blink), K-M since 1.5, IE forever, and now Pale Moon. I lost interest in Opera when they dropped the Presto engine. Also played with Sleipnir, but that was always iffy. Like you, my first browser was Netscape 3, but I abandoned that when v4 Communicator ruined the day and IE4 rescued the day.
OK, having played around, yes the Appearance>General>Display Menu Icons does indeed act quite irresponsibly. It is a bug. The skin seems not to be important.
Gordon.

I didn't like Opera even before that, and those speed dials drove me nuts; never could seem to get rid of them. Now there's Vivaldi, which claims to bring back some of the old Opera. I tried it out of curiosity, but hated it. On my machine it was the slowest browser I'd ever used -- took forever to start, or to bring up menus. It also improperly rendered some of my own CSS pages that look just fine in IE, FF and KM.

Well, I leave the menu icons off now. It's not really a major bug, anyway, as I don't depend on the icons. Maybe some other users find it more annoying, however.

Re: K-Meleon 76 RC

No, I haven't.
What rendering engine does it use? They "Otter" provide more info on their site for non-tech general users.
Oops! I guess I overlooked something on that site. Apparently Otter is another attempt to resurrect classic Opera. No thanks!
It is still largely under development, and runs under the QT framework. The QT-based app that I use (MuseScore) leaves a mess of keys and subkeys (and sub-subkeys) in my registry under HKCU/Software/Trolltech. They are from QT itself, not MuseScore.

If not KM, then my only choice is
TheWorld Browser v.7 - the lightest Chromium-based without any extensions (small system load and security) except some sort of inbuilt adblock (thing like KM's one kplugin but supporting rules in its own dat-format).
Re: K-Meleon 76 RC

Your link leads to a site in Chinese. The English site is here:
http://www.theworld.cn/twen/product.html
A Zip version is available, although I don't know how portable it is, as I haven't tried it. If my curiosity gets the better of me maybe I will, but I have a feeling that KM will be my default browser for a long time to come.
PS: Sorry, I seem to be drifting off topic lately.

Problem solved!
Anyway, I agree: back on topic!

The English version contains only very old 3.x version which was IE-wrapper not Chromium-clone.
The chinese site offers duo-lang version which could be used as English

Last Off-topic comment to Foliator:
Musescore is a complete mess and nightmare IMHO, especially Musescore 2.x
You should try out
LilyPond with
Frescobaldi for easier editing!
(Frescobaldi is nice and simple but also Qt-based so you might want to look at
another editor if you want to avoid Qt.
(Windows Notepad works fine [the included editor "LilyPad" can't handle Unicode if you need accented characters] and there's a plugin for jEdit if you want syntax highlighting and section collapsing features)

Bad - MIMEtypes aren't shown in Applications section. KM itself 'sees' them but shows white [selectable] lines to user
What I get there is a completely blank, white page with no list at all except for the headings, even though, as you point out, the mimetypes are recognized. The other sections in about:preferences are OK, however.
Any fix for this, other than the locales? None of those locales apply to me, anyway, as I'm using 76rc in English, which is my system default.

OK, thanks. I just noticed another problem with about:preferences: The Content section won't come up at all. If I try to switch to it from any other section, nothing happens; I'm still in the same section. Entering
about:preferences#content in the URL bar doesn't work, either.
