Important update: download videos in various formats without any external sites;
Nice macro and great research... It's just that downloading a script each time from userscripts.org isn't what I'd call "without any external sites" ;-) Perhaps it would also work if that script were stored and called from the local disc instead, but no idea, haven't tried yet.

matt, you are correct. it isn't an external site as long as it's just injecting a js which parses the url internally using the browser engine. in an extension the term 'external site' normally means it relies on an online service to parse the code.

the js is a userscript which can be injected locally using injectjs and readfile macro commands but using the js locally isn't the smart choice here. with sites like youtube that are constantly updating their code; at one point the js will stop working.. and every time youtube changes something the extension will need to be updated and the user will have to download it again. when linking the js to the author's site then it will automatically inject an updated code while the author keeps maintaining it.. requiring no frequent updates, it becomes more convenient to the user who shouldn't be faced with a non-functioning extension.

the real question lies in the usage of a particular js and if it would be better to inject locally or from a host. for some extensions where the js will not requiire updates in the very near future then it's better to inject locally.. also some js may be needed for offline functions(html editing for example).. for those naturally a local inject is much better..especially for dialup users who might use it while being offline. in the case of youtube services, where the js will probably need frequent updates and obviously it can never be used offline since it's tailored for a specific website.. then it's best to inject the js from the author's{maintainer} website

Matt, some of the sites support a lot of formats, other's don't, but I have nevertheless put them here - maybe at least one of them could be useful. If not, well, at least I tried:

v2.0.1 - should work fine but please make some tests. Two options for mp3 download included.

Adding
||imgops.com/images/*
to ABP rules could be useful.

I think I saw correctly, but when upgrading (unzipping) over previous version, most of the download links are gone.

Will take another check later today.

Well, now under Tools - Youtube services you have 8 options (Grab'n'run, keeptube, ...), with new version I have only 4.

Others doesn't work anymore or you have removed them on purpose? I must admit that I didn't look inside the macro ...

I have seen that Grab'n'run gives you only mp3 download options if you enter Youtube video URL ... I do not know why ...

I don't know either why they removed video download feature. Couple days ago grab and run did not work for me at all - got an error every time. I can add grab and run if you prefer.

BTW deturl is back so you don't have to use tools menu.

My top favorite video downloader site at the moment:

https://qdownloader.net

Was a tip from Jody Thornton. This service downloads from countless sites, in lots of format sizes, can convert to mp3 or flash flv etc.
Best of all: it allows it without needing javascript or any other dangerous stuff!
Can keep all my shields up, no prob smiling smiley
